Winds have decreased and temperatures have risen and wind chill

Skies are mostly cloudy across the area with scattered low clouds
and broken high clouds streaming across the area. Light northeast
winds prevail with temperatures currently in the upper 30s to near
50 degrees across the area. No fog has developed yet with the lowest
visibility around 3 miles , but can't completely rule out some
patchy fog will lower visibilities by morning. Weak southerly flow
will make a brief return to the area this afternoon with partly to
mostly cloudy skies continuing. Highs today will be in the 50s
across the area. One last night in the 40s is expected tonight with
partly cloudy skies and possible patchy fog once again.

Eyes then turn to the advancing well-advertised arctic cold front.
At sunrise Thursday the leading edge of the cold front will be
entering North Texas. The leading edge of the cold front will most
likely arrive to the northern Hill Country around 11 AM and then
progress into the I35 corridor by 1 PM, the Coastal Plains around 2
PM then exiting the CWA in the southwestern counties by the end of
the short term period at 6 PM Thursday. Day time highs will be
reached just before the FROPA and will range from the middle 40s in
the north to the upper 60s in the southwest. Temperatures behind the
front will quickly drop 10 degrees and then continue to have a steady
drop through the remainder of the afternoon. Temperatures at 6 PM
Thursday should range from the upper 20s in the Hill Country to the
middle 50s in the southwest where the front will just be moving
through. A Hard Freeze Watch remains in effect and begins for the
northern half of the CWA beginning at noon Thursday. The other piece
to this will be strong northerly winds behind the front. Speeds will
be around 18-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph and there is a decent
chance a Wind Advisory may be needed. With the already freezing cold
temperatures and strong winds, wind chill values by late Thursday
afternoon will already be in the teens in the northern CWA.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through Tuesday)

...EXTREMELY COLD ARCTIC AIR SET TO SETTLE INTO THE REGION HEADING
INTO THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND...

At the beginning of the long term period, temperatures will be
rapidly dropping behind the arctic cold front with northerly wind
speeds around 20-30 mph, gusting up to 40 mph. We have two hazards
that are set to go into effect at this time (Thursday evening),
including the second half of the Hard Freeze Watch for the southern
half of the CWA and a Wind Chill Watch for the entire CWA. It is
likely that these hazards will be upgraded to Warnings/Advisories at
some point during the day today after further collaboration with
surrounding offices takes place. There has been little change in
regards to the temperature and wind chill forecasts, with high
confidence in extreme cold settling into the region for the end of
the week. Additionally, there is still no precipitation expected
through at least the end of the long term period.

Once temperatures initially drop below freezing, most locations
north of San Antonio will not rise above freezing until Saturday
afternoon, with three consecutive nights of low temperatures at or
below 25 degrees expected for all of south-central Texas. Early
Friday morning will be the coldest period of the arctic air outbreak,
at least from a wind chill perspective, with wind chill values
ranging from the negative single digits across the Hill Country and
southern Edwards Plateau to the mid-teens across southern portions
of the Rio Grande Plains. The coldest morning from a temperature
standpoint for far southern portions of the CWA will likely be
Saturday morning when surface high pressure is more centered over the
region. While temperatures will not be as cold as the February 2021
outbreak, and with no wintry precipitation, it will still be
imperative that you remember the 4 P's and take action now to protect
your People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants.

The good news is that by Christmas Day temperatures will rise to
near 50 degrees for much of the area, with temperatures continuing
to climb through the beginning of next week. By Wednesday of next
week, temperatures will likely be in the low 70s for the Coastal
Plains with mid to upper 60s elsewhere.

Moist Gulf flow at low and mid levels over light winds and cold air
near the ground will maintain patchy to areas of fog and IFR to MVFR
CIGS from now through mid-morning Thursday. The most likely periods
for IFR VSBYS and CIGS are through 19Z today and again from 07Z to
15Z Thursday. A strong Arctic cold front will pass through the area
between 15Z and 18Z resulting in winds shifting to 340 to 010 degrees
and increasing to 20G40KT for the rest of the TAF period. There will
be some lifting of clouds to 020-030 AGL, and some clearing from OVC
to BKN to SCT.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for South-Central Texas..

A strong Arctic cold front will arrive on Thursday. This will

Warnings and Wind Chill Advisories are likely for our area. Wind
Chill Warnings and Wind Advisories are possible for parts of our
area. Low temperatures Friday and Saturday mornings will be in the
teens north to around 20 degrees south. High temperatures Friday
likely will not rise above freezing across the Hill Country and
across portions of the I-35 corridor. Now is the time to make last
minute preparations for this bitterly cold air. Remember the 4
