.SYNOPSIS...
An upper level storm system approaches the forecast area tonight,
bringing a chance for rain for areas west of the Continental
Divide. This system will bring strong gusty winds, blowing dust,
cooler temperatures, and lowland rain and mountain snow showers
on Tuesday. Snow showers will be possible above 7000 feet, and
accumulations should be less than 3 inches. On Wednesday, there
will still be some lingering showers and breezy winds across the
area. By Thursday and through the the weekend we will have a
warming trend with seasonal average temperatures starting on
Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
.SHORT TERM...Tonight and Tuesday...
Currently, upper level moisture is moving in producing partly
sunny skies across the Borderland. The temperatures are in mid to
upper 70s and lower 80s with the winds light to low end breezy and
from the southwest. This due to a trough of low pressure located
across the southwest. The center of the low is now about to move
onshore along the Californian coast that is brining up moisture
into our area from the Pacific Ocean. For tonight, expect partly
to mostly cloudy skies as the center of this low makes its way
across Southern California. As this system get close to our area,
a chance for rain showers is forecast for areas west of the Rio
Grande. As of now, any snow that falls will be below a .25 inches
of snow as much of the precipitation will be in the form of rain
showers. The snow levels will start of at 9000ft before midnight
then lower to 8000ft after midnight. The low temperatures on
Tuesday morning will be well above the normal with increasing
cloudy skies coupled with the flow from the southwest.

For tomorrow, a Pacific cold front will move in from the west as the
upper level trough eventually make its way across the our area. With
this approaching cold front, the pressure gradient will tighten,
which will cause the surface winds to increase mainly in the
afternoon hours. Currently, there is a high wind warning for
easter Otero and Hudspeth counties and a Wind Advisory for easter
Sierra and Dona Ana counties from 12 p.m to 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Locally stronger winds will be felt by mid afternoon across the
east-facing mountain slopes. In addition to the high wind event,
areas of blowing dust are possible across Luna, Dona Ana, El Paso,
Hudspeth and southern parts of Otero counties. These areas will
see less precipitation; thus, the dust will be more loose and will
be more vulnerable to be lifted and be blown across the
aforementioned areas due to strong winds. Showers will continues
to areas mainly north and west of the EL Paso counties through
Tuesday afternoon. There is also, a chance a few embedded
thunderstorms due to some instability in the atmosphere. With the
axis of the trough extending trough the middle of CWA, active
weather will likely continue into the evening hours on Tuesday.
The high temperatures will be below average except for parts of
the Hudspeth county courtesy of the passage of this frontal
system. Lastly, expect anywhere from 0.0 to 0.4 inches of total
QPF and 0.0 to 3.0 inches of total snow by the time system exits
our area. There may be higher amounts of snow across the far
northwestern Gila Region when all is said and done.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday night through Sunday...
Long term forecast starts on Tuesday night as the trough axis of
the upper level storm system passes through the Borderland,
exiting into the southern Plains on Wednesday morning. Extended
CAMs show light rain showers lingering into the evening, but
dissipating slowly after midnight Tuesday. There may be a
lingering snow shower in the Sacs, but accumulations during this
time will be very light. Wind will be on the decrease, but will
remain gusty along east-facing slopes, especially for areas
(roughly) south of a Lordsburg to Dell City line.

Wednesday will be cooler, breezy, with another chance of light
precipitation in our northern mountain zones. This is thanks to a
shortwave rounding the backside of the broad trough that will have
set up across CONUS. Winds will be lighter than Thursday, but
still in the 20-30 mph range due to a backdoor cool front racing
toward the southern Plains that will tighten the surface pressure
gradient. There will be a quick window for precip for the Gila
Region and the Sacs, but dry air will quickly advect in as this
system moves east.

On Thursday, we start to see some warming due to southwesterly
surface flow. However, another shortwave drops into the southwest.
This time, it won't drop as far as the previous two events. It
will bring some cloudcover and light breezes in the afternoon.

Friday through Sunday, we'll be in quasi zonal flow and an
overall benign weather pattern. On Friday, highs will finally
reach around normal for this time of the year. Expect temperatures
to warm a few degrees each day. A cold front tries to approach
the Sacs Saturday morning, but doesn't quite make it into the
region.

.AVIATION...18Z TAF CYCLE
VFR conditions are expected across all of the TAF sites through
the period with CIG SCT080-OVC250. The winds will increase this
afternoon across all terminals. The winds will be from the
southwest between 10 and 20kts with gust up to 27kts. By 12z
Tuesday the winds could increase further to between 20 and 30kts
with gust up to 37kts. Also there will be a slight chance for
showers and an isolated thunderstorm or two between 06 and 18Z
Tuesday. However, I did not mention any of this in the TAFs as
confidence in this at this time is very low. There will be no
reduction in the VIS across the runways.

.FIRE WEATHER...

Moisture and cooler temperatures will be present on Tuesday as a
trough moves across our area, increasing minRH Tuesday afternoon
to above 20 percent. Winds will be on the high side especially
during the afternoon hours. The exception will be Hudspeth county
where minRH will be a bit lower, creating near critical fire
weather conditions. As of now, the min RH for Hudspeth county is
slightly above 15% except along its southern edge where it 15% or
slightly less. Due to marginal conditions, no fire watch went
into effect. For Wednesday, moisture will decrease slightly across
much of the borderland while staying above Red Flag criteria. The
winds will be breezy with the temperatures on the cool side.
There might be a slight chance for showers across the Sacramento
Mtns as the trough continues to move eastward. For the rest of the
period, the temperatures will warm a couple of degrees each day,
with decreasing moisture and breezy winds.

The min RHs on Tuesday will between 40 and 50% in the mountains and
between 15 and 30% in the lowlands. The min RH's on Wednesday will
be between 35 and 50% in the mountains and between 20 and 25% in the
lowlands.  The ventilation rates will be excellent on both days.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of south central
New Mexico, southwest New Mexico, and southwest Texas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Breezy southwest winds 15 to 20 mph will develop this afternoon
and overnight. Outdoor objects should be secured. Patchy blowing
dust may reduce visibility across portions of Luna and Hidalgo
Counties this afternoon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Windy conditions return on Tuesday as a Pacific low crosses the
Southern Rockies. West winds of 30 to 40 mph will blow around
outdoor objects and make driving difficult for high profile
vehicles. Gusts up to 65 mph will be possible east of the Rio
Grande. Areas of blowing dust is possible for portions of far
west Texas, reducing visibility Tuesday afternoon. Scattered rain
showers Tuesday evening may interrupt commutes and make roadways
slick over mountainous terrain. Breezy winds will stick around on
Wednesday.
