.SYNOPSIS...High pressure will ensure mainly dry weather through
the week ahead. Inland temperatures will cool slightly today and
Monday, with a deepening marine layer, morning coastal clouds and
patchy drizzle continuing.
&&
.DISCUSSION...An upper-level trough centered well offshore is
forcing a few thunderstorms early this morning, beyond about 132W
longitude. That system will lift well to our north, with the core
of associated moisture and instability taking aim at Washington
and British Columbia on Monday. That system will however begin to
put a dent in the upper-level ridge centered off the southern
California coast, allowing for modest 'cooling' of inland
temperatures back a bit closer to late August normals through
Monday. Deepening marine air will head into our area tonight into
Monday as well, but this morning the marine layer is quite
shallow; only around 1000-1500 feet. Stratus and fog is mainly
limited to the immediate coastal plain, with very little inland
extent, while temperatures across the coastal mountain ridges are
running 10 to 15 degrees warmer than yesterday morning...staying
well into the 70s. While the stronger inversion might make clouds
at the beaches initially rather stubborn, the limited extent
should allow for a fair amount of sunshine for most coastal
locations today.
With the deepening marine layer later tonight into Monday, clouds
should extend much farther inland, but less stability with a
weaker inversion should promote better mixing and clearing skies
along the coast Monday afternoon. Some patchy drizzle may
accompany the marine cloudiness at the coast the next couple of
mornings, including on Tuesday as a secondary upper- level
shortwave passes by, but both days to start the week should turn
out fairly nice as skies clear. The hotter interior valleys will
still rise well into the 90s both days, and as upper-level ridging
rebounds heading through mid to late week, some 100-degree
high temps will likely return to the usual hot spots like Ukiah
and Hayfork.
Aside from the marine air, the atmosphere will remain very dry
with generally southwest to westerly flow aloft. The 500mb
vorticity maximum passing over Trinity County around Tuesday
afternoon does give some pause, as the associated cold air aloft
and lifting mechanism could help generate some convection.
However, given the dry atmosphere, it is doubtful at this point
that we will see any showers, let alone any thunderstorms. For
now, aside from any spotty coastal drizzle, the forecast remains
dry through next weekend. /AAD

.AVIATION...The return of marine stratus overnight crowds the
coastline from the northern most perimeter of our CWA at the Oregon
border, down to the Bear River ridge and the windward side of Cape
Mendocino. The coastal terminals have prevailing LIFR conditions as
of 12z with vertical visibility at 200 feet and 1/2 mile visibility.
With 500 to 700 foot ceilings expected at best, both KCEC and KACV
may be locked into IFR/LIFR categories for the TAF period as a
weakening ridge and an inbound shortwave disturbance approach the
area. VFR categories prevail at KUKI with southerly winds peaking at
noon with 15 kt sustained and gusts up to 20 kt. Winds will
eventually switch to a northerly bearing and remain gusty until they
ease to 10 kt this evening around sunset. /EYS

.MARINE...The northerly wind regime continues to ease as high
pressure ridging diminishes ahead of an approaching upper level
trough. Advisory level winds will be isolated to the southern outer
waters by noon today as conditions improve. Sea state will be fairly
benign until Tuesday when northerly winds build in the northern
inner and outer waters to advisory level. Otherwise, a small mid
period westerly swell continues through tonight with a northwesterly
swell filling in behind it around 3 feet at 12 seconds. A longer
southwesterly swell arrives Thursday with wave heights around 2 feet
at 15 to 16 seconds. /EYS
