AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 248 PM PDT Fri Jun 17 2022 .SYNOPSIS...An upper level storm system will move east across the region through Saturday, and will aid in periods of showers and a few thunderstorms. Otherwise, drier and warmer weather will develop across Northwest California during early to middle portions of next week. && .DISCUSSION...An upper-level storm system will gradually move east across NWRN CA through Saturday. Cold air aloft combined with modest boundary layer heating will be minimally sufficient for mountain shower development and a few embedded thunderstorms this afternoon, and again Saturday afternoon. Upper heights will then build Sunday through early next week. Dry weather will be probable as that occurs, and interior valleys will experience a warming trend, with highs climbing into the mid to upper 90s on Tuesday across portions of Lake, Trinity, and Mendocino Counties. Otherwise, quasi-zonal flow aloft will aid in continued warm and dry weather through the remainder of next week Garner && .AVIATION...VFR conditions prevail this afternoon, with broad low pressure alongside very weak onshore winds allowing the marine layer to mix out. Along the coast, model soundings show a weak marine layer forming just after sunset as northwest winds begin to build in again. A weak, elevated inversion will keep stratus ceilings high, likely around 1500 feet, and visibilities good. HREF shows the marine layer being ragged and inconsistent, especially south of Del Norte county. At worst, MVFR conditions are expected overnight along the coast. In the interior, some isolated thunderstorms are possible this evening over higher terrain, but otherwise VFR conditions will persist. /JHW && .MARINE...Gentle northwest winds will gradually increase across the waters this evening. Northwest winds will continue to build through the weekend. Moderate breezes are expected by Saturday night with near advisory level winds fanning out south of Cape Mendocino. Short period seas are expected to climb with the winds, reaching about 5 to 7 feet at 6 seconds. As high pressure moves in, northwest winds will continue to build throughout the waters, most likely reaching near gale force speeds on Monday. Strong, near gale northwest winds are expected to persist throughout next week. These winds will bring steep short period seas at 10 to 13 feet at 8 feet in the outer waters with longer fetch and 7 to 9 feet closer to shore.
