AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
252 PM PDT Fri Jun 10 2022
.SYNOPSIS...A stalled out front will bring increasing chances for
light rain to mostly Del Norte and northern Humboldt counties late
tonight through Saturday morning. Higher amounts of rain are
expected Sunday morning, mostly north of Cape Mendocino. Otherwise,
much cooler and windier conditions are forecast for Sunday with
breezy northerly winds and warmer daytime high temperatures for
inland valleys Monday and Tuesday next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Another nice day across the forecast area today with
pleasant afternoon temperatures and gentle winds. Temperatures
tonight will once again be quite mild with record high minimums
probable for Crescent City (57F), Arcata/Eureka (59F) and
Ukiah(61F). High temperatures will cool down some on Saturday, but
will most likely remain above normal. Much greater cooling is
forecast for Sunday with stronger westerly flow, thicker cloud cover
and showers associated with the passage of a transient shortwave
trough/surface front. Latest national blend of models indicate
chilly temperatures Monday morning for inland valleys. Frost will
be possible with temperatures dropping into the upper 30's. A few
colder inland valleys could briefly dip down to 36F which would
make frost formation more likely. Probabilities for 36F or less
are minuscule at the moment, 4-8% for cold places like Hayfork.
Freezing temperatures in the mountains, mainly in the ALPs above
6000 feet, is much more likely early Monday morning. Campers,
hikers and other outdoor enthusiast should be ready for unusually
cold mid June temperatures. The colder than normal temperatures,
at least early morning temperatures, may last into Tuesday too.
A stalled frontal boundary NW of coastal Del Norte county will
gradually meander southward late tonight through Saturday morning,
providing some light rain for mostly Del Norte and northern
Humboldt counties. A long fetch of 1+ inch precipitable water and
anomalous IVT's (integrated water vapor transport) are associated
with this front. A quarter of an inch or more of rain is forecast
for Del Norte county with this first round of rain. The chance
for a couple hundredths is about 50% to 60% for the Humboldt Bay
area Saturday morning as the IVT plume sags southward. The chance
for a tenth of an inch or more in 6 hours from 5AM to 11PM is only
15-20% at best per the national blend of models. The little bit
of wetness probably will not last long as rain chances start to
diminish in the afternoon and evening on Saturday. A second bout
of rain will arrive late Saturday night into Sunday morning as a
500mb shortwave trough moves toward the coast. Probabilities for a
tenth or more in 12-hours increases to 30-50%, however convective
allowing models indicates potential for higher amounts. Instability
will increase on Sunday with CAPE generally less 200J/kg and very
low probabilities for thunderstorms over the interior, mainly
Sunday afternoon along the Siskiyou county border and far
northeast Trinity county. Considering the strong westerly flow
with this trough, inclined to remove all mention of storms from
the forecast. Convective allowing models certainly indicate higher
potential for deep convection in the mountains of Siskiyou county
and the north end of the Sacramento valley and foothills.
Ensemble clusters and ensemble means continue to indicate ridging
developing offshore in the wake of the trough on Monday. Gradual
500mb height rises, increasing 850mb temperatures and stout surface
winds offshore will ensure dry weather and warmer interior daytime
temperatures for NW California through mid week. As is typical for
this time of year with prevailing northerlies offshore, stratus is a
sure thing, especially from Cape Mendocino northward. As we get into
the latter portion of the week, ensemble clusters and ensemble means
continue to indicate another trough approaching the coast. A cooling
trend is highly probable for interior locations. There is still a
great deal of variability with the depth and evolution of this
trough and hence the magnitude of cooling. Rain potential remains
low at the moment, 20% or less.
&&
.AVIATION...Visible satellite shows a stratus deck forming offshore
and expanding east. Visibility models depict some periodic VIS drops
this afternoon and evening as the stratus expands in from over the
water. A frontal boundary will generate light rainfall tonight while
ceilings come down to IFR and LIFR, with some fog possible. These
conditions will persist tomorrow through this 18Z TAF period with
the front's slow progression.
&&
.MARINE...Split mostly light wind flow will continue through
Saturday with seas dominated by westerly 5 to 7 ft mid period swell.
Northerly flow will be accelerated slightly stronger around the cape
Saturday afternoon. Winds will shift northerly Saturday evening and
quickly strengthen on Sunday behind the passage of a front, likely
to advisory level. Northerly winds will strengthen further on
Monday, and be maintained on Tuesday as high pressure builds in.
Gale-force gusts are forecast for parts of the southern waters, with
uncertainty on coverage at this time.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...A front this weekend will bring cooler temperatures
with highs only in the mid 70s on Sunday. Afternoon RH's will
jump up to 35 percent with very good overnight recoveries around
80 percent. The chance for wetting rain will be highest north of
Cape Mendocino this weekend, primarily Saturday morning and again
Sunday morning. Little or no rain is forecast for southern
Mendocino and southern Lake counties. Isolated wet thunderstorms
with LAL's of 2 are possible but not likely for zone 204 in
Siskiyou county and zone 283 in northern Trinity county. Gusty
northwest winds will build behind the front on Sunday with speeds
up to 30 mph over the ridges by Sunday afternoon and evening. Slow
warming is expected next week as northerlies increase and clip
the eastern and southern fringes of Lake county for another threat
for elevated fire weather conditions by Tuesday.
