What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at May 4, 2:52 PM PDT, 6 hours 11 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, May 4, 2:52 PM PDT, 6 hours 11 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
252 PM PDT Wed May 4 2022

.SYNOPSIS...Dry and warm conditions will continue today. Rain and
cooler temperatures will return on Thursday and persist through the
weekend, mainly across Del Norte and northern Humboldt counties.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Stratus clings to the immediate coast this
afternoon from KCEC to Cape Mendocino and then on S over the outer
coastal waters, along with the coast from Rockport to Pt. Arena.
These clouds should persist through this afternoon and evening,
lifting early Thursday morning as a weak trough approaches.

An upper ridge over the area today has brought more warm
temperatures to the interior, with some valley locations reaching
the mid to upper 80s. A broad upper trough will dig along the
Pacific Coast late in the week, with periods of rain returning,
mainly across the N half of the area. The best chance of rain (and
the heaviest amounts) will be on Friday, with some light amounts
possible as far S as southern Lake and Mendocino counties. Rainfall
amounts across portions of interior Del Norte County of over an inch
are possible. A singular isolated thunderstorm is also possible over
the northern interior Friday night. Snow levels will steadily drop
to near 2000 feet by Sunday, with 2 to 3 inches of snow possible
across interior Del Norte County and 1 to 2 inches across portions
of NE Humboldt County. With the cold temperatures aloft, there will
be the potential for small hail as well. Scattered showers will
linger into Monday, with drier weather by Tuesday and Wednesday.
/SEC&TDJ

&&

.AVIATION...LIFR conditions at the coastal terminals have slowly
improved as visibility increases. Ceilings at 500 to 700 feet were
holding categories to instrument flight rules this morning. A brief
reprieve from fog and low ceilings will be short lived as evening
hours near and a low approaches the Oregon coast, bringing cloud
cover and light rain by morning. Winds will turn southerly late
tonight and gusts up to 30 kts by early Thursday as the low arrives.
VFR conditions are expected at KUKI as winds are light and variable
until Thursday afternoon when westerlies gusts up to 20 kts.
Ceilings around 5000 feet as the winds out of the west pick up
tomorrow afternoon. /EYS

&&

.MARINE...Northerly winds will continue to ease through the evening,
particularly south of Cape Mendocino. Sea state will be fairly calm
ahead of an approaching low that will embark on the area by early
Thursday morning. Southerly winds will build to Gale strength in
small coverage area of the northern outer waters. Not enough area to
hoist a Gale warning at this time. A conglomerate of southerly wind
waves, long period southerly swell, and northwest swell will make
for confusing sea state through the next few days. /EYS
