.SYNOPSIS...Mild temperatures will continue through Saturday with
warmer conditions expected from Sunday into the first half of
next week. A series of very weak fronts will graze the northern
portion of the area, bringing areas of very light rain on
Saturday, Monday, and Thursday.

.DISCUSSION...Clouds and areas of light rain and drizzle across
the N this morning have given way to a cumulus field across much
of the area. The cumulus field is thicker across the N, but NW
low-level flow has cleared out most of the coastal areas.
Temperatures are generally about 5 degrees cooler than this time
yesterday across most inland areas.
Cold temperatures are forecast tonight, with areas of frost and
some freezing temperatures. Thicker clouds across the N will
mitigate frost formation. A Freeze Warning has been issued for SE
Humboldt and S Trinity counties, with a Frost Advisory for many
other locations in Humboldt, N Trinity, Lake, and NE Mendocino
counties.
Periods of quasi-zonal flow with some weak Pacific NW troughs
grazing the area will continue through the period. This will lead
to periods of mostly light rain affecting areas mostly N of Cape
Mendocino on Saturday, Monday, and Thursday. Total rainfall
during the period will range from nearly an inch across some
windward terrain of N Del Norte County to little, if any, rain
across the S. Snow levels will be generally high, although levels
will dip down to near 4000 feet with each front. However, QPF
values will be quite low, and snow will be fairly light and mostly
confined to extreme E Del Norte County. Not much instability is
forecast through the period, with little risk of thunderstorms
seen at this time. /SEC

.AVIATION...A weak disturbance moved across the region today
bringing mostly light amounts of rain to Del Norte and Humboldt
Counties. Skies and visibilities were generally VFR except in Del
Norte wHere occasional MVFR Cigs were reported with MVFR Vis in
rain and fog through morning. Interior Mendocino experience gusty
NW winds today. This evening, an isolated shower is possible over
Del Norte County as a weak weather perturbation slips across the
region. Most model data is in agreement that a not-too-energetic
cold front will move across the northern areas late friday. /ta

.MARINE...Marine conditions will generally be quite benign with
relatively light winds and low seas through Saturday. While winds
will remain northerly over our southern waters, a cold front
clipping the northern waters will bring southerly breezes near and
north of Cape Mendocino, accompanied by some showers. As Pacific
high pressure builds back toward the northern California coast later
Saturday, winds will shift back to northerly and increase through
Sunday. Small Craft Advisories might be necessary for the southern
waters as early as late Saturday afternoon, as a result, though
conditions do not look particularly rough, especially close to shore.
Seas are currently a combination of a decaying westerly swell still
around 10-seconds in period, and a little northerly chop, and that
will continue to be the case through Saturday...the latter dependent
on the local winds. That will change on Sunday, not only as the
northerly winds build short-period seas, but as a new 6 to 7 ft mid-
period swell arrives.
Another weak front is likely to bring brief southerlies to portions
of the northern waters on Sunday night or early Monday morning, even
if our forecast doesn't quite reflect that at this point. Stronger
high pressure will then try to build in from offshore and across the
Pacific Northwest, while a thermal trough develops near the
California coast through early next week. That will favor stronger
northerly winds and steepening short-periods seas, especially over
the outer waters Monday afternoon through Tuesday. Right now it
looks like about a 70% chance for gusts into the 30 to 35 kt range.
