What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Apr 10, 5:23 AM PDT, 8 hours 46 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Apr 10, 5:23 AM PDT, 8 hours 46 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
523 AM PDT Sun Apr 10 2022

.SYNOPSIS...Breezy conditions along the coast and ridges will
gradually diminish today. Clouds will increase through the day
with rain and mountain snow spreading southeast into the area this
afternoon and tonight as a front approaches. Northwest winds will
increase again behind the front on Monday. Much cooler and
showery weather will then continue through the end of the work
week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...Skies were mostly clear across much of the area early
this morning. There was a small patch of stratus over the Eel
River Delta. Temperatures were in the 30s across most of the
area, with lower to mid 40s along the coast and in the 40s and 50s
across the higher elevations of Lake and Mendocino counties where
gusty winds continue. The current Frost Advisory and Freeze
Warning will be allowed to continue until expiration later this
morning. Freezing temperatures have yet to be realized across
Mendocino and N Lake counties, but winds in the valleys have
mostly decoupled, and several more hours of radiational cooling
are anticipated.

Wind gusts of 40 to 55 mph continue across portions of SE Lake
County, and the Wind Advisory there will be allowed to continue
through late morning. At that time, another Wind Advisory may be
needed for the next storm system, with wind speeds with that system
peaking during the late afternoon and evening hours on Monday.
This will be due to the tightening pressure gradient associated
with a rapidly deepening surface low which will move onshore
around the N coast of OR late tonight with a central pressure of
around 995 millibars.

Frontal rains will spread across Del Norte and Humboldt Counties
late this afternoon and evening. Periods of moderate rain will
become increasingly probable across the remainder of NW CA by
Monday morning, with northwesterly onshore flow aiding in
continued shower activity Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

Mid-level temperatures will also cool during Monday, with 700 mb
temperatures falling at or below -15C. That will aid in snow
levels fluctuating between 1500 to 3000 feet during periods of
passing showers, with several inches of storm total snowfall
likely occurring at highway pass levels in Del Norte, Humboldt,
and Trinity Counties. Berry Summit and Scott Mountain may receive
over 4-6" of snow during this event, with 2-3" at Collier Tunnel
and S Fork Mountain, and 1-2" at Oregon Mountain. A Winter Weather
Advisory was hoisted by yesterday's day shift. The only changes
made were to make the start time at midnight tonight.

Colder temperatures aloft will lead to an increasing threat of small
hail showers from Monday afternoon through Wednesday. In addition,
isolated thunderstorms will be possible across the northern half of
the area Monday afternoon and evening.

Large-scale troughing is forecast to occur across much of the
CONUS during early to middle portions of next week. Embedded
disturbances may subsequently drop southeast around the western
periphery of the larger wave and aid in additional periods of
shower activity. However, confidence in the timing of those
features is low at this time. /SEC

&&

.AVIATION...Northerly winds are subsiding this morning. Ceilings
will begin general lowering today, particularly farther north closer
to KCEC where some spotty showers will develop. Shower activity will
increase tonight to periods of moderate rain with CIGS further
lowering across the coastal terminals. Southerly winds will increase
tonight and become gusty before switching more westerly and
subsiding some after a frontal passage close to the end of this 12Z TAF
period.

&&

.MARINE...The northerly winds will continue to ease in most marine
zones throughout the day while steep and some hazardous seas linger.
Gales will remain longer in the southern zones today, eventually
focusing closer to the coast into the evening while winds weaken
greatly elsewhere. Winds will briefly veer to southerly tonight
before sharply turning northwest early Monday morning as an upper
level trough and associated cold front approaches. Gale conditions
will fill into all waters throughout the day on Monday. Winds will
weaken later Monday night through Tuesday. In addition, a NW swell
will continue to diminish into the weekend, but a larger NW swell is
forecast to move through the coastal waters on Monday.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...N winds gusting from 30 to 50 mph will continue
at ridge level across portions of Lake County through this
morning. In addition, an exceptionally dry airmass lingers in this
area with relative humidity values in the teens. Despite the
critical combination of strong winds and dry air, fuels are
generally not receptive to large rapid fire growth. As a result,
will continue to headline the low RH values and gusty winds in the
Fire Weather Forecast. /SEC
