.SYNOPSIS...Clouds have largely diminished for this afternoon as
we remain under a weakening high pressure system. Overall, the major
challenges over the next couple of days will be with low
temperatures and frost formation over some of the interior valleys
of California as growing season is set to begin tomorrow.
&&
.DISCUSSION...The area of high pressure will remain over the area
through the weekend with marine pushes at the coast bringing stratus
and some fog in the overnight periods before things burn off in the
afternoon. The biggest concern in this pattern will be overnight low
temperatures, particularly for inland valleys as growing season is
set to begin in interior Humboldt County beginning tomorrow. Have
issued a frost advisory for a few valleys in interior Mendocino and
Humboldt Counties for tonight. More information is available on the
web. This pattern may very well continue for the weekend. Otherwise,
no precipitation and mild afternoon temperatures are expected.
The next system will approach our area on Sunday night into Monday.
This front will largely stay to our north, but some rain is expected
for the area with the highest amounts for Del Norte County.
Ensembles are showing snow levels above 5000 feet, so major impacts
are not expected at this point. In general, this seems like a
typical spring front that will be more impactful to areas north of
California.
Then, afterward, we remain in largely zonal flow with a weak ridge
trying to build into the area from the south. This could bring
additional chances for frost in the mornings with mild temperatures.
Ensembles are hinting that the pattern could remain active, but the
National Blend of Models has not bitten on it quite yet, and most
ensemble members are showing dry, so this is the solution that is
most reasonable at this point. -Schaaf

.AVIATION...Haze will cause slightly reduced visibilities along
the coast before noon but, as winds become gusty this afternoon the
haze will dissipate. The one exception will be near KCEC, where the
haze will remain despite the gusty winds. Conditions from early this
afternoon through this evening are expected to remain VFR, except at
KCEC where a mix of VFR/MVFR conditions are expected.

.MARINE...Gale force gusts and very steep, and hazardous seas
continues across the waters through Friday. Gale Warnings remain in
effect for the outer waters and southern inner waters, while
Hazardous Seas Warning remain in effect for the northern inner
waters. Gale force gusts up to 40 knots is expected downwind Pt St
George this afternoon and evening.
Winds will diminish on Friday as another weak frontal system
approaches and passes by to our north...although gale force gusts
will persist over the southern outer waters through Saturday.
Otherwise, gusty north winds will continue through Saturday,
followed by significantly weaker winds on Sunday. In addition, very
steep wind-driven seas will persist through Friday, mainly South of
Cape Mendocino. Thereafter, seas will remain primarily dominated by
the local northerly winds. A mid-period NW swells builds on
Saturday. A forerunner NW swell trains will traverse the area
through much of the next week.
