AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
258 PM PST Thu Feb 24 2022
.SYNOPSIS...A cold and dry air mass will remain across the region
through midday on Saturday. A cold front will move through the
region late on Saturday and into Sunday, bringing some
rain and mountain snow back to Northwest California. Additional
precipitation will be possible through the middle of next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...Under clear skies and light winds, cold
temperatures prevailed again this morning with another record low
for Eureka (29 degrees). A few patches of shallow ground fog
developed prior to sunrise. Skies today have been mostly sunny,
with cool temperatures continuing.
Overnight lows tonight will be a few degrees warmer tonight but
are still expected to be quite chilly, with lower 30s along the
coast and around 20 to the mid 20s in some of the colder interior
valleys. A few normally colder, wind-protected areas may drop to
the upper 20s before daybreak in the coastal zones, but have not
issued another Hard Freeze Warning due to the limited coverage and
the fact that both temperatures and dew points have trended
several degrees higher than yesterday at this time. The evening
shift will continue to monitor.
High pressure will continue to promote cool and dry conditions on
Friday and into Saturday. A shortwave trough is forecast to
approach on Saturday and will shunt the high pressure to the
E. Rain chances will increase Saturday afternoon and widespread
rain will spread across NW CA Saturday evening and into Sunday.
Snow levels will briefly lower as the shortwave approaches but
are forecast to rise as precipitation starts to spread across the
area. Some accumulation of snow will be possible on portions of
Highway 3, particularly at Scott Mountain Summit. At this point,
totals are expected to remain sub-advisory.
Model guidance is diverging on the forecast details next week.
Clusters do suggest that shortwaves will probably keep moving into
the Pacific NW, but a semi-persistent ridge centered to our S may
promote a more northern storm track. Have kept the extended
portion of the forecast close to the NBM given the uncertainty.

.AVIATION...High pressure and dry conditions are a catalyst for
benign weather that has prevailed across area airports/airfields.
Overnight at coastal terminals, offshore flow helped to inhibited
any significant fog development, although a morning pirep (PRCACV)
out of ACV mentioned some FG/BR in the vicinity. Overnight,
satellite imagery indicated a wee amount of "limited", shallow and
patchy BR/FG along a few inland river valleys. Diurnal winds will
continued out of the NW during the day. Friday may see just a
little bit more pockets of shallow fog around EKA-ACV in the
morning, otherwise on Friday, little change for flight operations.
/TA
&&
.MARINE...Northerly winds gradually diminish through Friday
morning. Winds will become very light and variable during the day
on Friday. The Small Craft Advisory for the outer waters will come
to an end tonight (this evening in the S and late tonight across
the N). Southerly winds will develop and increase this weekend
ahead of an approaching frontal system. Rains will spread across
the waters ahead of this front, with the heaviest and most
widespread rains near and N of Cape Mendocino. However, no
thunderstorms are expected.
In addition, the current short-period NW swell around 5 to 7 feet
will continue subsiding through Friday. There is also a small mid-
period W swell that is moving across the waters and is expected to
persist into the weekend. A long-period W swell will build into the
waters over the weekend. /SEC
&&
.BEACH HAZARDS...A storm over the NW Pacific will send a long-
period swell toward NW California on Saturday. The swell
forerunners will enter the area at around 5 to 9 feet at a 20
second period. Short period southerly waves will be building by
Saturday evening in response to the increasing S winds, but there
should be enough of a window between these occurrences to allow
for a fairly clean W swell through much of the daylight hours on
Saturday. These high energy waves will bring a high risk of
sneaker waves on Saturday morning through afternoon, although this
energy will possible persist through the evening. A Beach Hazards
Statement remains in effect.
Conditions will be hazardous for beachgoers on Saturday. Don't be
fooled by an ocean that looks calm. There can be 30 minutes of
small waves before a sneaker wave strikes. Avoid rocks and
jetties. Avoid steep beaches. Stay much farther back from the
water and never turn your back on the ocean. /ZVS&SEC
