.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will trend slightly milder this week
across interior portions of Northwest California, with highs
falling into the lower to mid 90s by Friday. Coastal temperatures
will remain near normal with nighttime and morning stratus.
Other than a few periods of coastal drizzle, conditions are
expected to be dry for the next seven days.

.DISCUSSION...Thick coastal stratus blanketed the coastal waters
again this morning, extending up many adjacent river valleys. The
areal coverage was very similar to yesterday. Clouds have eroded
with the mid-summer sun across many land areas, but they continue
to hug portions of the immediate coast, as well as around the Eel
River Delta and Humboldt Bay. The amount of stratus over the
coastal waters is less extensive this afternoon than it was at
this time yesterday. Early afternoon temperatures ranged from the
mid to upper 50s beneath the clouds at the coast to the 90s across
portions of the interior, particularly across Lake, Trinity, and
E Mendocino counties.
Expect coastal stratus to expand inland once again tonight beneath
a rather strong low-level inversion. The marine layer is expected
to remain around 2000 feet deep, so expect similar cloud coverage
to last night.
An upper trough will shift E over the area from the NW through
Saturday, with temperatures decreasing a few more degrees. The SW
high pressure dome is expected to reassert itself early next week,
potentially bringing warmer temperatures, particularly across the
interior. The NBM continues to keep daytime high temperatures
rather uniform through this period (even the higher percentiles),
and there is a fair amount of uncertainty with respect to the
strength of the ridge by this time. /SEC

.AVIATION...Stratus has been steadily diminishing in coverage with
ceilings increasing to MVFR at coastal terminals this afternoon. A
clear slot in the lee of Trinidad head and offshore KCEC should
spread over the terminals later this afternoon. Any clearing or VFR
will likely be brief, a few hours or less. Probabilities for MVFR
ceilings will increase this evening as diurnal mixes ceases. IFR
conditions are probable by midnight and through the rest of the
night at both KCEC and KACV. Misty air may reduce vsby's to 3SM or
5SM this evening. A deeper mixed layer will significantly reduce the
threat for long duration fog with vsby's of 1/2SM or less through
Friday morning. IFR or LIFR ceilings early Friday morning will give-
way to VFR conditions Friday afternoon and evening as northerlies
increase offshore and push onto the coastal plain. Clear skies will
continue for KUKI through Friday. It is possible for low clouds to
spread into KUKI from Sonoma county, however the probability for
MVFR ceilings is too low to include in the terminal forecast at this
time (less than 10%).

.MARINE...Northerlies will increase tonight through the weekend. The
strongest winds are forecast to occur in the outer waters, downwind
of Cape Mendocino and around Pt St George during the weekend. Gale
force gusts up to 40 kt are highly probable in these areas this
weekend. Steep seas will build this weekend, peaking close to 15
feet by Sunday evening. Large steep seas and brisk north winds will
persist into Monday, before easing up on Tuesday.
