.SYNOPSIS...Hot, dry weather is expected to gradually build with
interior temperatures above 100 possible on Wednesday. The coast
will also warm into the 70s with mostly clear skies and breezy
afternoons.

.DISCUSSION...Warm, sunny conditions continue to gradually build
throughout the area today. Despite clear skies, building northwest
winds have keep the coast cool in the low 60s with hot interior
valleys just reaching the low 80s. High pressure is expected to
continue building over the are through at least Wednesday.
Ensembles, however, show a somewhat unusual evolution. The deep
upper level trough currently centered over the great basin is
expected to break down, leaving behind a cutoff low over the Channel
islands. High pressure is expected to fold over the low across
northern California.
Broadly speaking, this pattern will allow president warming in the
interior through mid week. Wednesday looks to be the hottest day,
with interior valleys easily exceeding 90. NBM currently shows about
a 50 to 70 percent chance of the usual hot spots exceeding 100
degrees including Weaverville, Hayfork, Big Bar, Ukiah, Covelo, and
Clearlake. While this will very likely be the hottest day of the
year so far, it is not climatologically unusual with interior
stations expected to stay several degrees below record highs. Heat
risk currently highlights most of the aforementioned valleys
consideration. With the current forecast, however, very few areas
exceed a heat risk value of 3, meaning an advisory is not currently
warranted. This assessment could easily change with just few more
degrees of warming (especially in overnight lows) so close
monitoring will be needed.
While the coast can expect significantly cooler temperatures,
coastal stations seem to have a much better shot at breaking some
high temperature records. Strong northwest winds up to 20 mph have
kept the marine layer mixed out the last couple of days. As low
pressure builds into the south, weak offshore winds will further
help keep the marine layer at bay while strong northerly winds
continue during the daytime. NBM shows an 80% chance of the coast
breaking into the low to mid 70s Tuesday and Wednesday, likely
breaking high temperature records in Eureka.
High pressure looks to weaken, though not completely give way, later
in the week. This will bring inland temperature down just a bit to
the low 90s. As offshore winds tapper off, a marine layer become
increasingly more likely at the coast heading into next weekend.
Cluster ensemble models currently show wide uncertainty for the
weather beyond Wednesday. Essentially all show high pressure build
back in some form, but the exact height and position of this high is
very inconsistent. Only about 15% center it over California, meaning
an strong heat wave at least is unlikely. About 30% of members show
a weak trough around day 8, which is the only hint at rain or
thunder in the current forecast. /JHW

.AVIATION...Fair weather cumulus are presently dotting the interior
mountains, with some thicker cumulus found on the windward side of
the coastal terrain N of Cape Mendocino. Gusty NW winds will
continue into the early evening hours along the N Coast, with gusts
to near 25 knots. Low cloudiness is expected to redevelop along the
N Coast later tonight, but the marine layer will be gradually
shrinking through the night. Visibility reductions are expected to
be mostly minor. Other than some afternoon gusty NW winds at KUKI,
light winds and VFR conditions are expected. /SEC

.MARINE...NW winds will continue to gradually increase into Tuesday.
Have upgraded the Gale Watch to a Gale Warning and adjusted to
beginning and ending times. Hazardous seas will likely continue
across at least the outer waters past the end of the Gale Warning.
Wind gusts will peak near 40 knots over the N outer waters late
Tuesday. Besides wind and short period waves, a small WNW swell of 3
feet at 14 seconds is expected to build in Monday. /SEC
