.SYNOPSIS...Mild temperature with occasional periods of light rain
will occur through Monday morning. A significant rain storm will
then impact the region Monday afternoon through Tuesday.
Torrential rainfall rates and strong south winds will occur as a
result. After Tuesday, additional rounds of wet weather will
continue during mid to late next week.
&&
.DISCUSSION...A broad upper-level ridge was centered over the
West Coast early this morning. During the next 24-48 hours, the
ridge will amplify and support continued mild temperatures (both
highs and lows inland and at the coast), and also aid in shunting
light precipitation northward into OR and WA. However, model
guidance shows the ridge breaking down Sunday night into Monday
morning as a shortwave trough approaches the PACNW. A southward
trailing frontal boundary will subsequently aid in a round of
light rainfall across NWRN CA. The western segment of the front
will then stall, and rapidly evolve into a frontal wave as strong
surface cyclogenesis occurs over the NERN PAC Monday
afternoon/evening within the exit region of a 150+ kt 250 mb jet.
A cold front associated with the NERN PAC cyclone will approach
coastal NWRN CA Monday evening. A 60-80 kt southerly coastal
barrier jet combined with a tight surface pressure gradient will
support widespread gusts ranging from 40-70 mph...with the highest
speeds expected to occur across exposed ridges and coastal
headlands in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.
Very heavy rainfall rates, potentially torrential, are also
forecast to develop along/ahead of the front Monday evening
through Tuesday morning. The strong low-level jet will promote
intense moisture flux with IVT values ranging from 500-1000
kg/m/s, with the orientation of the jet focusing the highest
rainfall totals across south-southwest facing terrain. The front
will then exit the region Tuesday morning through the afternoon.
Rain will subsequently diminish in intensity, but post-frontal
destabilization will occur as midlevel temperatures cool. Showers
will develop across NWRN CA as a result, and thermodynamic
profiles may be sufficient for isolated thunderstorms in the
vicinity of coastal Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Cooling
temperatures aloft will also support snow levels ranging from
4000-5000 feet MSL across Northern Trinity County. Light snow will
develop across the Trinity Alps as a result, with additional
periods of high mountain snow expected during mid to late portions
of next week.
Beyond Tuesday...ensemble based 500 mb cluster guidance shows a
generally zonal upper flow regime positioned across the North
Pacific through the next 10 days. The orientation of that flow
regime will place NWRN CA within a favorable pattern for multiple
rounds of widespread rainfall, the cumulative effects possibly
leading to hydrological impacts in the form of increased flood
potential.

.AVIATION...A weak shortwave slips over ridging aloft today,
driving a pulse of coastal southerly winds and improving flying
conditions along the Redwood Coast, although this shortwave is
expected to bring a period of LLWS to Del Norte county this
afternoon as it moves overhead. Light rain is possible much of
today for the coast north of Cape Mendocino, with VFR persisting
through daylight hours in this area. Conditions deteriorate this
evening after the shortwave moves onshore, with another night of
intermittent IFR possible for coastal terminals. Meanwhile, the
rest of the area continues to see fog and stratus through much of
the morning. Fog should lift by late morning as the shortwave
sweeps through, although high low clouds should stick around much
of the day...then ceilings and visibilities drop once again late
this evening and tonight, with another round of valley fog
formation expected.

.MARINE...The streak of benign seas and light winds draws to a
close this morning. A series of surface lows are forecast to
intensify north of Hawaii and track toward the PNW this weekend
and early next week, successively lofting fronts and steadily
increasing WSW to W swells toward the coast. The next front
arrives this morning and should be a little stronger than
yesterday's, although advisory level winds remain primarily in the
northern outers...and northern portion of the southern outers.
Today's front will be followed by another W swell filling in
tonight, bringing seas above 10 ft by Sunday afternoon. The next
front approaches Sunday night, with advisory level winds possibly
spreading beyond the northern outers. This front will likely be
followed by another reinforcing W swell reaching into the mid
teens, possibly pushing combined seas into the high teens by
Monday.
The strongest in this onslaught of fronts is forecast to arrive
Monday night and Tuesday, with widespread southerly gales
currently forecasted and gusts nearing storm force downwind of
Cape Mendocino. This front will be followed by another solid W
swell, with heights likely pushing into the mid 20's at 15 seconds
across all zones. Conditions then look to settle down a bit late
next week, although southerlies likely continue for the
foreseeable future.

.HYDROLOGY...Heavy rain with a moderate to strong atmospheric
river is forecast to impact the entire area Monday evening
through Tuesday morning. Rainfall totals during that time are
forecast to range from 3 to 6 inches...with rainfall rates
expected to be 0.50 inch per hour or more. The duration of this
rainfall event will be relatively short, probably no more than
6-8 hours. However, main stem rivers will experience rapid rises
Monday night into Tuesday. The probability of exceeding monitor
stage is forecast to be 30-40%, with a roughly 15-25% chance of
flood stage being achieved. The potential for urban and small
stream flooding will also increase during this period of heavy
rain, and there is also a non-zero chance of debris flows
occurring across area burn scars.

.BEACH HAZARDS...King tides will continue to yield minor flooding
across portions of Humboldt Bay during the late morning hours
through Sunday. As usual, King Salmon and Fields Landing will be
the most probable locations for minor flooding. Otherwise, a large
westerly swell will impact the coast of Northwest California
Tuesday through Wednesday. Breaking waves from 25 to 30 feet will
be possible, and will create very hazardous conditions along area
beaches, jetties, and rock outcrops. /SEC
