What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this excessive heat warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Eureka, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this excessive heat warning went out at Aug 30, 2:44 PM PDT, 12 hours 42 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Aug 30, 2:44 PM PDT, 12 hours 42 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
244 PM PDT Tue Aug 30 2022

.SYNOPSIS...Seasonable weather will occur through mid week,
followed by significant warming across interior portions of
Northwest California during the weekend into early next week. In
addition, conditions are forecast to be dry across much of the
region during the next seven days.

&&

.DISCUSSION...An upper-level anticyclone currently positioned near
the Four Corners Region is forecast to expand west and north
across the WRN CONUS during the next seven days. An expansive area
of anomalous heat will become centered over the Central Valley of
California by Saturday afternoon, with peripheral areas such as
Trinity, Lake, and eastern Mendocino Counties experiencing hot
temperatures as well. At this time, the hottest and potentially
most impactful conditions across the EKA CWA are forecast to
occur across Lake County. Thus, an Excessive Heat Watch has been
issued valid Saturday afternoon through Tuesday evening due to
afternoon temperatures ranging from 100 to 110 degrees.
Temperatures elsewhere across the interior are forecast to be a
few degrees cooler, and thus have been left out of the watch for
the time being. Otherwise, dry subsident conditions associated
with the previously mentioned anticyclone will preclude
precipitation development across Northwest California during the
next week.

Garner

&&

.AVIATION...LIFR stratus will be stubborn along the coastal TAF
sites despite HREF/hi-res models indicating a brief reprieve this
afternoon. Not much evidence of scattering out today and becoming
less confident that much scattering occurs at all today, based on
observations from yesterday and latest satellite and observation
trends. Although still burning hot, the 6 rivers fire smoke plume
will have little effect on visibility if at all at KCEC today
giving the turn to a more southern component to wind direction
today/tonight and continued to not be a factor for KACV and KUKI.
Stratus and fog should make a return tonight for coastal TAFs
which consistently has occurred under this scenario, while KUKI
should stay mainly clear tonight, soundings indicate a very small
potential for stratus creeping up from the south and FEW004 has
been included for the 12Z FM group.

&&

.MARINE...Relatively light and variable/south winds tonight into
Wednesday should persist before an increase to speeds occur
beginning Wednesday night. Confidence is increasing toward
enhanced northerly wind speeds in the southern outer waters along
and south of Cape Mendocino by late Wednesday night/early
Thursday morning, through Thursday, and into Friday morning.
Winds/Wind gusts have been bumped up a tad from the previous
forecast as hi- res models are trending stronger with an increased
surface pressure gradient and a turn toward a more north
component to wind direction. This will in turn prompt a small
craft advisory for the southern outer waters, but will hold off on
an advisory for the southern inner waters as the coverage of
advisory level wind/wind gusts will be limited.

.FIRE WEATHER...Inland temperatures will mainly be in the 90s
this week with significant warming occurring late in the week. By
the weekend, temperatures across the interior will range from 100
to 110 degrees. In addition, afternoon relative humidity values
will be in the single digits and teens, mixing heights will be in
excess of 10,000 feet above ground level, and overnight recoveries
are expected to be moderate to poor. Otherwise, winds will
generally be terrain driven, with westerly flow becoming locally
gusty through favored terrain during the afternoon hours.
