  the area (Kirksville to KC Metro and south) are expected to
  see 2-5 inches of snow. Hazardous travel is expected on Thursday
  across the entire forecast area. A winter storm watch is in
  effect for most of the area Wednesday night through Friday
  morning.

-Cold temperatures are expected Thursday through Saturday. The
 coldest night is Friday night into Saturday morning with lows in
 the single digits.

Discussion

High pressure has been moving through the region today, giving us
a cool, but quiet and partly sunny day. Highs are forecast to
reach the upper 30s to low 40s. An upper level shortwave trough
moves through tonight, increasing cloud cover. At the same time, a
cold front on the surface moves through the region, shifting
winds back to the northwest and clearing out the clouds. We won't
be able to saturate in the lower levels, so this the frontal
passage will be dry. Tomorrow will be quiet, as high pressure
noses into the area from the north. Highs are forecast to be in
the 30s north of HWY 36 and 40s to near 50 south of HWY 36.

Another round of winter weather arrives Wednesday night and sticks
around through Friday morning. An elongated trough, stretched over
much of the CONUS will start sliding southeast Wednesday over the
Rockies. Numerous shortwave troughs will eject from the main wave
and move through our area out ahead of it starting Wednesday
night through Friday. At the surface, low pressure will develop
over the TX/OK panhandles and move east-northeast through far
southern MO. This will allow enough moisture to advect into the
region and at the same time keep the temperature profile below
freezing for most of the area. Those in central MO will likely see
surface temperatures rise just above freezing in the afternoon
Thursday, so a rain/snow mix is expected for a short time. The
snow will be tied to features at the 850-700 mb layer. There will
be a low level jet nosing into the area, especially during the
overnight hours and a boundary. These features will enhance
snowfall rates, generating moderate to heavy snow at times in the
early morning hours Thursday. The LLJ will weaken as the day
progresses Thursday, so snow is expected to become more light to
moderate. Thursday night we will likely see a small uptick in snow
rates once again, mainly over central MO, where there will be
enhanced lift due to another shortwave trough moving through and
the strengthening LLJ.

With all of that said, snow is scheduled to start first in far
northwest MO/northeast KS between 6 PM Wednesday and midnight
Thursday. It will slowly spread east and south, with snow starting
in the KC Metro and over to Kirksville between midnight and 6 AM
Thursday. Linn County KS over to Howard County MO will then see snow
develop between 6 AM and 12 PM Thursday. 6-8 inches of snow is
expected for areas the HWY 36 corridor and west of HWY 65. This
includes St. Joseph and Chillicothe. The KC Metro over to
Kirksville is currently forecast to see 3-6 inches of snow, with
Linn County, KS over to Cooper County, MO forecast to see 1-3
inches of snow. Snow will move out of the area from the northwest
to the southeast Thursday night into Friday morning.

Uncertainties: There is high confidence in a winter storm impacting
the area and at least 1-2 inches of snow for our entire area. Medium
to high confidence for onset/exit timing. Medium confidence for
location of highest snow totals. This area of higher snow can still
shift a little.

Cold temperatures are expected Thursday through Saturday. Highs will
be in the 20s and 30s with lows Thursday night in the teens and 20s.
Friday night will be the coldest night with lows in the single
digits. Sunday we will see temperatures return to the 50s and 60s.

A cold front will move through the over the next few hours, slowly
shifting winds to the north. An upper-level shortwave trough is
moving over the area currently, leading to mid-level clouds. Once
this wave shifts east and subsidence kicks, later in the night, skies
should become clear to mostly clear. This afternoon and evening,
we'll start to see the effects of the system that will bring snow
to the area. Mid and high level clouds will thicken up with bases
eventually becoming around 5000 feet Wednesday evening. It looks
like snow will move in after the valid time of this forecast so
have no mention of it with this forecast.

region beginning Wednesday night and ending through Friday morning.

Thursday, anticipate periods of moderate to heavy snowfall bands
interspersed throughout the day. Impacts to travel are expected,
especially during the morning commute Thursday for many locations.
