Discussion:
A cold front is working through the area early this morning with
cloud decks quickly decreasing behind the front and some light fog
developing. Given the increase in saturation in the lower layers and
a bit of lift along the front, would not be surprised to see some
light patchy drizzle/freezing drizzle or some flurries develop in
addition to light fog. This should be short-lived, however, and
do not expect much, if any impacts with any light precip that may
develop. Ahead of the front temperatures have been hanging out in
the 30s overnight, but have been steadily dropping post-frontal
with much of the forecast area likely dropping into the teens and
20s by sunrise. Temperatures will rise several degrees by this
afternoon, but highs probably won't get much warmer than the upper
teens and lower 20s north of the MO River, and mid 20s to near 30
degrees south of the River.
Breezy, southeasterly winds will develop Wednesday ahead of a trough
that will drop out of the Canadian Rockies. Temperatures won't be
balmy, but we will see a slight warm-up south of the I-70
corridor where temperatures should be in the mid to upper 30s mid-
afternoon Wednesday. Northern Missouri will also see temperatures
warm to near freezing, plus or minus a degree or two.
Unfortunately, this will be the last time we see temperatures
anywhere near 32 degrees until sometime early next week. A strong
cold front will push through the Plains Wednesday night with
temperatures rapidly dropping behind the front. Thursday's high
temperature will occur at or just after midnight and then fall
throughout the day. By Thursday afternoon, temperatures will be in
the +/- single digits. Temperatures won't make it much past the
single digits and lower teens until Christmas Day (Sunday).
The aforementioned trough, and the main focus of this forecast
period, will dive into the plains Wednesday afternoon as an open
wave. This system looks initially Clipper-like before the trough
deepens, taking on a more negative tilt as it starts to lift
towards the great Lakes and starts to occlude. Given how quickly
this system moves through the forecast area, and the fact that it
still won't have matured...decided to stick to more conservative
snow totals. Another factor to consider is even though SLRs of
20:1 are likely given a saturated DGZ and cold vertical
temperature profile, strong winds will result in fragmented
dendrites and increased compaction of snow. This will lead to
lower overall snow totals. Storm total QPF of around a quarter
inch (a bit higher for the northwest forecast counties) should
yield a general range of around 2-5 inches for much of the
forecast area. Higher amounts of 4 to 6 inches will be possible
across far northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri. As always,
tweaks to the forecast may result in higher or lower snowfall
totals as the event nears.
This system will keep on giving as the cold and snow aren't the only
impacts expected. Strong winds will also accompany this system with
gusts up to 50 mph possible Thursday and into Friday. Given the very
cold temperatures, the strong winds will result in dangerous wind
chills of -40 to -30 degrees. At these temperatures and wind chills,
frostbite can occur within several minutes to any exposed skin and
extreme caution should be taken if planning on being outside for
any length of time. Strong winds and accumulating snow will also
create near-whiteout and blizzard conditions to much of the
Plains, including our forecast area. Travel will be very
difficult, if not impossible, for portions of the central Plains
and Upper Midwest beginning Wednesday night and continuing into
the weekend. If planning on traveling, keep up to date on the
local forecast and be flexible about leaving early before the
storm arrives.
