Key Messages...

- Chilly, cloudy, and very windy today with west-northwesterly
  wind gusts as high as 45 mph.

- Chilly, cloudy, and breezy conditions continue into Friday with
  a fairly hard freeze expected Friday night/Saturday morning.

- Warming trend begins Saturday with highs in the 70s returning by
  Sunday.

- Active weather pattern is expected Monday through Wednesday of
  next week with severe weather possible, especially on Wednesday.

Discussion...

The center of the 500 mb low currently resides near the border of
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin and is
nearly stationary, with troughing across much of the central
CONUS. A tight pressure gradient will lead to very strong winds
today out of the west-northwest with sustained winds around 25 mph
and gusts up to 40 to even 45 mph. These strong winds paired with high
temperatures this afternoon only in the mid 40s to low 50s under
overcast skies, it will not be a particularly pleasant day for any
outdoor activities, much less Opening Day for baseball. Wrap
around moisture on the back side of the low will bring a slight
chance for some showers this afternoon/evening and even maybe a
few snowflakes late tonight into early Friday morning, especially
across northeastern MO. Winds should decrease by this evening,
but gusts up to 30 mph will likely still persist through the
overnight. Chilly, cloudy, and breezy conditions continue into
Friday as the region remains on the backside of the mid level
trough under northerly flow aloft with high temperatures only
reaching the mid to upper 40s for most locations. Skies should clear
Friday night with winds calming, allowing for good radiational
cooling and a widespread freeze Friday night into Saturday morning
(April 8th is the average date for the last freeze in KC over the
1991-2020 climate normal period). This will likely be a fairly
hard freeze with anywhere from 8 to 10 hours of subfreezing
temperatures and overnight lows in the mid to upper 20s.

Saturday will be a transition day as the trough exits to the east
and mid level ridging begins to build in from the west. This will
allow for temperatures to warm as high as 60 degrees toward the
MO/KS border (cooler temps as you head northeast). Mid level
ridging takes hold by Sunday, returning high temperatures to the
low to mid 70s Sunday afternoon.

Attention then turns to early to middle of next week. A large
scale trough develops over the western CONUS on Monday and
remains there through Tuesday, with warm and moist southerly flow
increasing dewpoints into the mid 40s to low 50s by Monday and mid
to upper 50s by Tuesday. A couple of weak mid level impulses are
expected to move through the region providing some subtle forcing
for ascent, and with decent deep layer shear in place, a few
strong to even severe storms may be possible (better chances on
Tuesday and primarily for areas along and south of the Interstate
70 corridor). The GFS and ECMWF differ in how they handle next
Wednesday, but the 00z ECMWF forecasts the western trough to take
on a negative tilt and finally eject eastward across the Plains
with the entire region within the warm sector Wednesday afternoon.
An approaching surface low and cold front would likely initiate
thunderstorms that afternoon and evening, with severe
thunderstorms possible given the combination of decent instability
(1500 J/kg of SB CAPE) and strong deep layer wind shear. As such,
the SPC (which favors the ECMWF solution) has nearly our entire
region highlighted for severe weather potential for next
Wednesday.

West northwesterly winds up to 25 knots with gusts as high as 35
to even 40 knots are expected for much of the day and evening before
relaxing a bit to gusts up to 30 knots by the early overnight
period. Mid level cloud cover will move in later this morning with
high end MVFR CIGs expected by late evening. There could be a few
passing light showers or drizzle today but not enough coverage or
impacts to even justify VCSH at this time.
