Message of the Day

- Sunny and warm weekend.

- Elevated to high fire weather concerns Sunday afternoon with
  breezy south-southwesterly winds and dry air.

- Rain and storm chances return Monday through Wednesday. Can't
  rule out the possibility for some stronger storms Tuesday.

High pressure has given us a nice spring day with clear skies and
temperatures in the 50s. Those near the MO/KS have the best shot at
seeing temperatures reach 60 degrees this afternoon. Winds shift
back to the south-southwest tonight allowing for an increase in warm
air advection across the region. Highs tomorrow are forecast to
reach the 70s area-wide. Sunday is looking warm but also breezy. Low
pressure developing out west and the high pressure over the
southeast will tighten the pressure gradient. South-southwesterly
winds will range from 15-20 mph with gusts between 20-30 mph.
Despite the southerly fetch of air, we will remain fairly dry, with
relative humidity dropping into the upper 20 to lower 30 percent
range. Therefore, elevated to high fire weather concerns exist
Sunday afternoon and burning is discouraged.

Monday, a vertically stacked low pressure system approaches the
region giving us our next chance for rain. Instability looks to be
well south of the area Monday, so no thunder or lightning is
expected. Rain moves in from the south Monday afternoon, with a
short break possible Tuesday morning. This system will be slow
moving though so rain chances continue Tuesday. Instability
increases to about 800 J/kg during the day Tuesday so some
thunder and lightning is expected. Deep layer shear will be high
with this system, so it is possible for some storms to become
strong to severe during the day Tuesday. Again, this is a slow
moving system, therefore, rain chances linger into Wednesday. This
precipitation will be post frontal, so no thunder or lightning
is expected. Rain chances finally exit the area Wednesday night.
Over this three day stretch, we could see 1-2 inches of rain
across the area. Temperatures during this time will be in the 50s
and 60s Monday and Tuesday and then 40s and 50s Wednesday and
Thursday. Wednesday and Thursday night near or around freezing low
temperatures are forecast.

Friday, upper level ridging and surface high pressure take hold
over much of the country, giving us a dry period and a chance for
our temperatures to return to the 60s.
