Issued at 217 AM CST Mon Jan 31 2022

A broad area of clouds stretches from the Northern Plains into
Iowa then southeastward into Kentucky ahead of developing storm
system along the US Canadian border. Periods of patchy dense fog
have been occurring early this morning at KDBQ and KCWI and
expect it to continue through sunrise. Temperatures at 2 AM ranged
from 5 degrees at KMXO to 18 degrees at KMPZ and KEOK.

Key Message:

Quiet weather is expected over the next 24 hours with warmer
temperatures.

Discussion:

Surface high pressure will push to the east into the Mid Atlantic
over the next 24 hours as the pressure gradient tightens with a
developing surface low that is forecast to pass to our north
tonight This will push a warm front across the area Monday night.
This will result it being breezy and warm today and tonight.

Due to the cloud cover, adjusted high temperatures for Monday down
slightly from previous forecasts. In general high temperatures
will range from the lower 30s along the Highway 20 corridor to
the mid 40s in far northeast Missouri. Winds are forecast to
slowly increase through the day with speeds of 10 to 20 MPH MOnday
afternoon into Monday night.

The thermal ridge axis will pass across the area 6 to 12 UTC
Tuesday as the warm front moves across the area. Low temperatures
are expected to occur prior to midnight prior to the warm frontal
passage with warming temperatures overnight. Forecast lows are
upper 20s north of Highway 30 to the mid 30s south of a Fairfield
to Galesburg line.

Models have been showing some weak lift overspreading northern
Missouri by 12 UTC Tuesday but models have been consistently
showing deeper moisture farther to the south and not aligned with
the lift so have left the period dry for now.

Key messages:

1. A winter storm watch has been issued for the far southern
portions of the CWA. This storm will impact the region Tuesday night-
Thursday in two main rounds; one Tuesday night and another stronger
wave Wednesday night-Thursday. Latest model suite has shifted the
QPF axis slightly northwest just enough to bring more impactful snow
to southern/eastern portions of CWA. Main energy remains 800 miles
off the west coast this morning so further refinements to the
forecast remain possible.

2. Cold end to the work week, with near advisory wind chills Friday
morning.

Tuesday-Wednesday...after a warm start to the day, a cold front will
push through late morning with temps falling in the
afternoon/evening. Highs for the calendar day will be in the upper
30s/low 40s and occur in the morning. Forcing increases in the
afternoon post frontal across northern MO and west central IL for
precipitation to develop. Forecast soundings continue to show rain
will occur initially before column cools enough to changeover to
snow. There is some concern that low level dry air and warm ground
may limit rain/snow totals prior to midnight. After midnight,
increasing upper level divergence, high omegas in the DGZ, and mid
level fgen forcing will bring about higher snowfall rates to areas
mainly south of a line from Kirksville MO to Sterling IL. Snowfall
probabilities of 3" or more is highest south of this line during the
day Wednesday. Locations north of this line will see lighter amounts
between a trace to 2 inches, with incoming arctic High over the
Great Plains helping create a very tight gradient in amounts right
over the center portions of the forecast area. A break in the
snowfall is possible Wednesday afternoon/early evening between the 2
main waves, but will be short lived.

Wednesday night-Thursday...the stronger wave will ride along the
boundary to our south with increasing upper level lift aided by
150kt jet streak, high omegas in the -12 to -18C layer, and strong
low level convergence developing. Storm Total QPF from both waves
and WPC QPF has increased from previous runs, with 0.50" amounts or
more now shown south of a line from near Memphis MO, to Galesburg
IL, to Princeton IL. A quick dprog/dt of the NBM QPF amounts also
show this northwestward shift. These amounts combined with SLRs
between 12 and 14:1 yields snowfall totals over 8 inches in
northeast MO, southeast IA, and west central IL and a winter storm
watch has been issued. Any further shift in QPF amounts in future
forecasts will have a direct impact to snow totals and any headline
adjustments. Strong north winds between 15-25 mph may also cause
some blowing and drifting snow issues overnight, especially on
east- west roads. Snow will end from west to east late Thursday
morning.

Thursday night on...post winter-storm, arctic high pressure will
briefly usher in cooler temperatures into the area. Highs Friday
will top out in the mid teens to near 20 with no precipitation
expected. Wind chills may approach advisory levels in the far
northwest portions of the CWA. For the weekend, high pressure will
move east and replaced by southerly flow. Temperatures should
rebound with highs back into the 20s/30s for the weekend. Will
have to watch for precip chances mainly for Sunday with another
frontal passage, but little if anything is favored right now.

Expect VFR conditions for this TAF period. Southerly winds will gust
around 20-25 this afternoon, before diminishing this evening.
LLWS is expected for all terminals this evening and tonight ahead
of a southward moving cold front. That will diminish Tuesday
morning, with winds becoming light and shifting to the west by
mid-morning.

eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois north of Highway 30.Expect

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY

A winter storm will bring accumulating snow to portions of the
outlook area late Tuesday through Thursday. The heaviest snow will
fall Wednesday night, with total snowfall amounts over 6 inches
likely along and south of a line from Kirksville Missouri, to
Galesburg, to Princeton IL. Snow amounts between 3-6 inches is
possible south of a line from Fairfield, to the Quad Cities. A
winter storm watch has been issued for portions of the area.

Wind chills between minus 15 and minus 25 degrees will be possible
Friday morning.
