Early this morning temperatures dropped like a rock to start the
night as cirrus started to stream into the area. Temps in the
single digits to below zero were found across the area. Wind chills
were in to the the negative teens around 1 AM. Through the day,
expect a change in the pattern as the strong system approaches the
area.

Key messages:
1. Snow starts later this afternoon across Iowa.
Discussion:
Most of the day today should be dry before the upper level wave and
arctic front move into the area. Easterly winds will help to bring
in a little warmer temps ahead of the system. These temps will
still be well below freezing. As the inverted trof starts to take
shape, we can expect precip to start after 20z in the far west and
start to approach the River by 00z. Overall light snowfall amounts
are expected. Do expect the snow to stick to roads as road temps
continue to be well below freezing. Untreated surfaces could become
slick by 00z especially west of the Mississippi River. Most of the
impacts from this storm will occur after 00z Thursday.
.LONG TERM...(Tonight through Tuesday)

The latest suite of deterministic and ensemble models runs not all
that different from previous few runs, a progressive but dynamic
winter storm sweeping thru our area in frontal forcing form, and
then really wrapping up and bombing out into a tremendous low
center over the central GRT LKS by late Friday. Still signs of a sub-
980 mb sfc low over eastern lower MI or to just northeast of the LK
Huron area by Friday afternoon. Will bullet the multi threats and
come up with some headline adjustments.
Snow...A real challenge and hammered out totals taking into account
sounding saturation, lift, speed of system, high SLR's in incoming
arctic airmass getting opposed some by flake shattering by brisk
winds as it falls. Came up with a range of 2.5 to around 5 inches
for most of the area, with the more widespread higher amounts of 3-5
inches occurring generally along and north of I80. The latest GEFS
snow totals agree with these amounts, and the new 00z ECMWF Kuchera
ratio says 3-6". Most of the accumulations occurring from west-
northwest to east in progression acrs the area from Wed night
through early Thu afternoon. Winds of 15 to 25 MPH and gusts up to
35 MPH a the snow falls late Wed night through midday Thu for near
white-out conditions in rural areas support winter storm warning
despite the snow amounts which could go even lower. Plus plunging
wind chills into headline category Thu afternoon.
Wind...THe latest ensemble wind gust potential suggests 35-40 MPH by
Thu afternoon, 35-45 later Thu night, max gradient on Friday making
for 45 to 50+ MPH values during the day, and then decreasing back to
35 to 40 MPH by late Friday night into Sat morning. 30 to 35+ on Sat
still producing patchy blowing snow.
Wind Chills...Dipping into advisory levels by Thu afternoon, -30 to
near -40F by Friday morning with crutch of arctic intrusion, and
then -25 to -35 by Saturday morning.
Near blizzard/blizzard conditions...Still very possible, but bulk of
accumulating snow window will have sub-blizzard criteria winds. But
later Thu afternoon thru Friday the pressure perturbation signals
are there to drive sfc winds into producing gusts up to 45-50 MPH.
Even light to moderate(say 2-4") of snow cover will still get lofted
into near white out or ground blizzard conditions. This may occur
later Thu afternoon and especially Thu night into Friday. Do see the
eventual need to upgrade to a blizzard warning for most of the area,
but when to do so still somewhat at question. That's why the winter
storm warning will continue for now and hi-lite multi
impacts/threats.
Headlines...With a lag to the eventual occurrence or possible
occurrence of blizzard conditions, like mentioned above, have
coordinated with surrounding offices and kept the WS warning going
for now, and upgraded the lingering watch to a warning but starting
at a later time of 06z Thu. All headlines continue thru 12z Sat to
cover near blizzard conditions and dangerous wind chills even well
after the snow has stopped falling. And all are subject to an
eventual upgrade to a blizzard warning.

Mainly VFR conditions will continue through mid afternoon,
besides a pesky MVFR deck hugging the BRL site which may linger
through at least late morning. Then an approaching storm system
will veer the winds southeast with some increase today, and
moisture advection will start to lower the CIGs back to MVFR late
this afternoon and into the evening. Eventually, the initial
precipitation to our much advertised winter storm will move into
the region late this afternoon into the evening hours. MVFR/IFR
conditions will seep in from the west as snow moves in. The snow
with this winter storm should be more of the dry, powdery type,
but VSBYs will still be reduced to 1-2SM's at all sites except BRL
toward 12z.

The snow will produce slick conditions overnight and into the early Thursday morning commute. Winter Storm Warnings have been issued for tonight for the entire Outlook Area due to snow, increasing winds and cold. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect across the Outlook Area through Friday night. This is due to the multiple threats of additional snow through Thursday afternoon. This along with incoming extreme cold, strong winds, and possible blizzard conditions later Thursday through Friday night. Even after the snow stops, the high winds may produce near white-out to blizzard conditions especially in rural areas Thursday night through Friday night. The combination of these significant hazards may make for near impossible travel in dangerous cold. It needs to be emphasized that the combination of blowing snow, possible blizzard conditions, and extreme cold will be very hazardous and possibly life threatening if stranded outside Thursday night through Friday night.
