.AVIATION...

A steady increase in low level moisture underway late this evening
within a strengthening south-southwest wind, downstream of a cold
front set to arrive late tonight. This will support widespread low
VFR to MVFR stratus, with a few pockets of light showers evident on
radar. Gusty conditions will persist, with a gradual increase in
peak gust magnitude in excess of 25 knots. The cold front is
forecast to traverse Se Mi between 09Z and 12Z Sat morning. The
front will be marked by a wind shift to the west and a rapid
increase in winds, with gusts likely exceeding 40 knots. Sufficient
post-frontal moisture maintain a higher coverage of stratocu
throughout Saturday. West winds remain gusty Saturday, but with a
gradual decline in magnitude into the afternoon.

For DTW...Gusty winds remain south-southwest tonight. The cold front
is forecast to move across metro between 11Z and 12Z Saturday
morning. The strong westerly winds (gusts over 40 knots) will be
along and behind the front, with gusts over 40 knots possibly
persisting through late morning.

 DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

DISCUSSION...

..Windy advisory tonight through Saturday morning...

Upper level energy/trough coming out of the northern Rockies this
afternoon. Some additional jet energy/PV racing through the Four
Corners region with merged energy/height falls moving through the
Great Lakes region late tonight. Impressive 6 hr 500 MB height fall
center progged to move through Lower Michigan Saturday morning,
-130 M. Main issue is the Gulf of Mexico plume is well out ahead, as
the 850-700 MB Theta-E will be over the Eastern Great Lakes this
evening. Isolated higher based light showers at the 700 MB have been
percolating throughout the day, but bulk of activity is east. Thus,
tough call with the measurable rain chances tonight with the lower
moisture content offset by the good dynamics arriving with the
deepening system. The shortwave upper level trough axis quickly goes
from positive to negative tilted as it rolls through, and will lean
toward just enough low level moisture for light shower generation
ahead and along the cold front tonight.

Sufficient surface based capes (~50 J/kg)/low level lapse rates
along and behind the frontal passage 10-12Z Saturday to tap into 50
knots of flow in the 925-850 MB layer with a good surge of low level
cold advection Saturday morning, as 925 MB temps progged to plummet
to -6 C around Noon. Enough confidence in a brief period of wind
gusts of at least 45 mph, and will be issuing wind advisory for
entire CWA. Peak winds right around fropa time and centered around 6
AM (+/- 2-3 hrs). If capes end up being a little higher than
expected and showers become a bit more robust, increased mixing
depths and downward momentum could even support gusts of 50+ mph.
Brief nature of the gusts and no leaves on trees, should not have a
big impact regardless, but limited/sporadic power outages/minor tree
damage possible.

Inversion heights quickly come down Saturday afternoon, shutting
down any potential lake enhancement with the westerly flow, as 850
MB temps look to only bottom out near -10 C as well.

Modest warm advection pattern for Saturday night will be interrupted
by a Pacific shortwave racing through Alberta and tracking through
the day on Sunday. A weak warm advection pattern will return for
early next week as sprawling high pressure moves to the Eastern
Seaboard and the upper level flow becomes pseudo zonal for a short
period. Very tight baroclinic zone over the northern Tier of the
CONUS will make for a low confidence forecast by mid week, with
potential southern and northern branch interaction.

MARINE...

A low pressure system is on track to lift from the upper Midwest
into Ontario late this evening into Saturday morning, with a strong
low-level jet now in place across the entirety of the Great Lakes.
Despite the shallow mixing depths with the warmer air in place, the
energetic wind field is close enough to the near surface to bring
periodic gust to gales through the late evening and early morning
hours. A strong cold front will move across the Great Lakes between
09Z to 12Z which will bring unstable over lake conditions and will
significantly increase mixing depths. This will pull down stronger
wind gusts and will bring high confidence to see gust to gales,
including high end gales over Lake Huron. The biggest change to this
forecast update will be increased potential to see gust to storms
across north and north-central Lake Huron between 12Z - 18Z tomorrow
as wind direction orients to the west-northwest, bringing idealized
fetch. There is now an increasingly likely chance that a short-fused
storm warning will be issued for Saturday morning. Otherwise as it
stands, Gale Warnings are in effect for all open water zones. Gust
potential will quickly ramp down throughout Saturday afternoon and
evening as the strong low level jet pivots east.

The stronger gales and possible storm gusts will be initially
accompanied by rain showers as the front passes. A transition to a
rain/snow mix to snow will be possible over northern Lake Huron
through Saturday as instability remains high over the lakes with the
northwest fetch.
