.AVIATION...

A period of improvement to broken VFR ceiling is on schedule this
evening as a band of subsidence forced dry air translates north to
south along the terminal corridor. Coverage of rain/snow showers
also decreases over SE Mi and mostly ends along the terminal
corridor. Downsloping NW low level wind could extend the favorable
cloud and precipitation trends after midnight, especially in the MBS
area, before MVFR clouds solidify again late tonight and Tuesday
morning. Anything more optimistic is not expected to hold up against
abundant cold air over the warm Great Lakes, increasing nocturnal
boundary layer stability, and the background of strong cyclonic
flow. These elements favor reinforcement and support of MVFR stratus
until possibly building upward with daytime surface heating in the
afternoon. More likely is that MVFR holds as yet another surge of
upper level forcing and low level cold air bring the next round of
rain showers. A few more wet snowflakes are also possible, although
mid afternoon timing will require increased precipitation rate which
may come up short compared this afternoon.

FOR DTW... A few gusts near 25 knots remain possible early this
evening settling below crosswind threshold tonight. Bands of rain
with a few snowflakes have already diminished in coverage which
continues tonight and Tuesday morning. A period of VFR ceiling hovers
around 5000 ft until MVFR solidifies after midnight and then holds
through Tuesday morning.

DTW THRESHOLD PROBABILITIES...

* High for ceiling 5000 feet or less through the forecast period.

  afternoon.

DISCUSSION...

Deep closed low gradually decelerating as it eases across the
southern basin of lake Huron late this afternoon. Southeast Michigan
now firmly entrenched within the immediate cold cyclonic western
expanse of this height fall center. Pockets of showers continue to
manifest within this moist and modestly unstable profile, with the
ongoing cold frontal passage offering a supplemental source of
upward vertical motion. Tremendous convective depth owing to the
sizable lapse rate magnitude beneath the defined cold pool will
maintain the potential for some heavier convective bursts to
materialize going forward through this evening, perhaps affording a
few occurrences of graupel given the suppressed freezing levels.
Blustery post-frontal conditions both within and outside of showers
as the pressure gradient continues to contract. Gusts up to 30 mph
most locations. A favorable downwind trajectory off outer Saginaw
bay and lake Huron will expose mainly Huron county to an elevated
wind gust risk through tonight - potential for peak gusts to 40 mph.
A general downturn in precip chances overnight aside from the
eastern thumb as forcing temporarily wanes under decreasing lapse
rates.

High amplitude troughing will continue to govern conditions
throughout the midweek period. Southeast Michigan remains fixated
within the western flank of the closed mid level circulation
meandering invof lake Huron/southern Ontario, maintaining cold, deep
layer northwest flow. This effectively locks in an extended stretch
of well below normal temperatures. Noted increase in upward vertical
motion will commence again throughout Tuesday, as the diurnal
improvement in lapse rates accompanies a period of sustained cva
pivoting back south-southwest around the circulation base. This will
support an increase in shower coverage, likely numerous to
widespread at times. Wind gusts again to 30 mph given the underlying
wind magnitude and mixing depth, as temperatures struggle into the
lower and middle 40s. Similar profile holds into Wednesday, although
with a lower apparent window of stronger forcing. Perpetuation of a
broader, moist cyclonic flow may prove sufficient to generate a few
diurnally supported showers within the extensive, stagnant low level
moist plume. One final lobe of vorticity marking the back edge of a
vacating lower height field may prove a nuisance in terms of low end
precip chances and clearing potential into Thursday, particularly
across the thumb region.

A more sizable pattern shift emerges starting Friday, as large scale
heights finally recover upon the full eastward ejection of the mean
trough. This process within the background of meaningful low-mid
level warm air advection will net +10 degrees of warming Friday off
readings noted Thursday. Dry conditions with above average
temperatures then expected throughout the weekend period as lower
amplitude mid level westerly flow holds atop a low level
southwesterly gradient. Highs approaching/exceeding the 70 degree
mark by Sunday.

MARINE...

An upper-level low pressure system will continue to meander over or
in the vicinity of Lake Huron through Tuesday which will reinforce a
strong pressure gradient across the Great Lakes. This will bring
idealized northwest fetch along with cooler air of Canadian origin
that will support gusts to gales over Lake Huron for the remainder
of the day and into the better part of the day on Tuesday. There is
a window overnight where the pressure gradient gets even stronger
over northern Lake Huron, closer to the Mackinac Bridge. Gusts to 40
knots become probable overnight as the strength of the system
increases.

Gale Warnings go into effect for all of Lake Huron, which now
includes inner Saginaw Bay as current observations support a window
for gusts to gales through Tuesday morning. Isolated gusts to gales
also remain possible across western Lake Erie through roughly 5-6 PM
EDT, but will preclude the issuance of a Gale Warning as gust
potential is expected to drop off afterwards. A Low Water Advisory
will be in effect through the day today for western Lake Erie as
wind direction is backed more to the west-southwest for this
location.

Otherwise, unstable over lake conditions will continue to support
widely scattered to numerous shower potential through Wednesday.
Enhanced cloud depths with the unstable air means the low-end chance
for waterspout development also holds. Low pressure will gradually
