Strong northwest winds will persist today with gust in the 40 to
50 mph range common. These gusts will create blizzard conditions
over portions of the northern half of Iowa, especially in rural
or wind prone areas. Further south, significant blowing and
drifting of snow remains likely as well.

Wind chill values this morning will be between 35 and 45 below
zero then will settle into the 25 to 35 below range this
afternoon through Saturday morning.

Note, once the blowing snow and blizzard conditions improve,

Confidence Short Term: Medium to High

Though the high impact event is a certainty through early weekend,
some details will still need to be ironed out in the next 24 hours.
There remain some timing differences and evolution differences
between the synoptic models, leading to some differences in
snowfall, winds, and timing of system departure. Arctic high
pressure stretches from southwest Canada stretching into the
Northern Rockies this morning. We are already seeing some of the
cold filter into Iowa today, prior to the storm. A cold front
extends over central MN to a low over Lake Superior. Overall the
H850 moisture profile remains unimpressive at this time, with deep
Gulf moisture situated along the Gulf Coast and not yet beginning to
migrate north due to lack of any lee side troughing today. In fact
PWATs over the Gulf Coast remain about an inch while here across
Iowa, PWATs at 12z Tuesday remain around 0.15 inches thus far.  As
we move into tonight and Wednesday, a wave now off the PacNW coast
will quickly slide into the Northern Rockies, with an area of lift
forming along the leading edge of the Arctic front over the Rockies.
With the cold air steadily advancing southeast, a strengthening
baroclinic zone will begin to enhance precipitation over the Dakotas
into northwest Iowa.  Over the next 24 hours, moisture will begin to
increase with available moisture of 0.30 to 0.45 inches by tomorrow
afternoon into Wednesday night. As we move through Wednesday, light
snow will increase across the west/north through the afternoon as
the first of two H850 systems tracks into northwest Iowa along the
Arctic boundary. Winds will gradually increase into the afternoon,
depositing about 1 to 2 inches of snow over the northwest third of
our forecast area northwest of a line from near Mason City to
Denison in the afternoon.  The evening hours will see a shift of the
snow into northeast areas with up to 2 to 3 inches there. With that
have included a headline for the northwest areas as snow falls and
winds slowly ramp up. Though conditions will be a shy of winter
storm warning overall in the northwest early in the event, we have
opted to keep headlines simple for now and just go with a warning
in those areas; then expanding it south and east with time. With
the colder highs today, tonights lows will be colder over most of
the area. Have lowered lows to near 10 below north and in the
single digits above zero south. Wednesday, just ahead of the
system, south winds will briefly transport warmer air into the
region. highs will recover to the upper single digits north, to
the mid to upper 20s in the south. With the Arctic boundary
entering northwest Iowa by 00z, the far northwest will already
feel the impacts in the afternoon hours. Initial wind impacts will
be limited in the evening, but rapidly begin to increase after
midnight over the northwest and quickly spreading over the entire
area by 12z Thursday. The second wave will spread a second round
of snow into southern and central Iowa later Wednesday evening
with winds likely to increase during the night hours and continue
for all of Thursday. Temperature will be falling off to sub zero
readings for most of the area and we should also see an increase
in snow ratios overnight. This places another round of 2 to 3
inches of snow from central to southern areas of the state. Along
with that, the bitter cold will be arriving across the region.
Lows are expected to drop to around 10 below northwest and to 5
above southeast.

.LONG TERM.../Wednesday night through Tuesday/

Confidence:  Medium to High

The worst conditions will be Thursday into Thursday night, but
lingering higher impact conditions will continue Friday with wind
and blowing snow expected. Despite the snow diminishing Thursday,
winds will continue to be strong as gusts approach 40 to 45 mph or
higher.  Lingering flurries and blowing snow will continue into
Friday. We will carry our winter storm warning for the duration of
the period for now, and the evening/midnight shift will look again
more closely at areas or all of central Iowa, that need to be
upgraded to a blizzard warning with the likelihood of whiteout
conditions at times. The nature of the snow will easily allow for
significant blowing and drifting, making for very difficult to
possibly impossible travel at times. Wind chills are anticipated
to drop to 30 to 35 below Thursday and approach 35 to 40 below
Thursday night into early Friday morning. As the storm slowly
retreats on Friday, we will continue to be in fairly strong
northwest flow along with the potential for flurries and
occasional ground visibility near a quarter mile. Highs from
Thursday into Friday will struggle to reach zero, even in the
southeast. Into the weekend, temperatures will finally warm a bit
and reach the teens to lower 20s. A fast moving Clipper will bring
around round of light snow to the region Sunday into Monday. Some
uncertainty on track, amounts and impacts is ongoing and will be
addressed in the coming days.
