afternoon and evening. Temperatures near to below freezing will
favor wintry precipitation types over northern into western Iowa.
The bulk of the snowfall accumulations are expected across
northern Iowa, where 4 to 7 inches should be common by late
Friday morning. Just to the south, roughly between Highway 3 and
Highway 30, a glaze of ice mixed in with the snow is possible.

Key Messages:

- Fog and stratus expanding early this morning and likely to
  persist into the day. Dense fog not expected to be widespread,
  but monitoring short-term trends.
- Winter storm system to affect the area later today into Friday
  morning, with accumulating snowfall over northern and parts of
  western Iowa, along with perhaps patchy light freezing rain.
- Larger and stronger storm set to impact the region early next
  week, with strong winds at times and widespread precipitation.

A large bank of fog and stratus has steadily advanced from eastern
into central Iowa overnight, and is currently reducing visibility
over about the east/southeast half of our service area. However,
dense fog has been very sparse, as the visibility reduction is
being somewhat mitigated by the fact that the fog underlies low
stratus ceilings, limiting radiative effects. Will continue to
closely monitor observations in case an advisory becomes warranted
early this morning. Some high-res models continue to gradually
advect this feature west northwestward right across Iowa this
morning and into the afternoon, while others gradually thin out
and largely dissipate it after mid-morning. Have maintained fog
mention in the forecast through noon for now and will update as
needed through the day. The clouds and fog, as well as lingering
cooler-than-expected air from the surface ridge sliding by, have
cast some aspersions on hopes for MaxT today and have nudged the
forecast down a bit. However, with warm air advection kicking in
later in the day am hesitant to lower much further at this time.

Beyond the morning fog, the winter storm system set to affect the
region from today into Friday morning is still more or less on
track. The expected progression of the precipitation swath
continues to slow down and have adjusted the forecast and
associated Winter Weather Advisory segments accordingly, as it now
appears likely any snow or ice accumulations will likely not occur
until tonight, except perhaps in the western fringes of our area
later this afternoon. There is also some doubt of how robust QPF
will be across the southwest half of Iowa during the day, as the
system may not really mature until around this evening, focusing
higher QPF in northern and northeastern Iowa tonight. Trending the
forecast in that direction has had the consequence of bumping up
snowfall amounts just a bit, with the forecast now just a little
below warning criteria up around Mason City. However, considerable
uncertainty remains regarding precipitation type, especially
tonight, with temperatures hovering near or just below freezing
and rain, snow, and freezing rain all possible at various
locations and times. Given this unusually high degree of
uncertainty but still a high potential for light to moderate
snowfall and patchy light icing over northern Iowa, have not
altered the Advisory areas but did slow down onset timing for
various segments as referenced above.

The first storm system will clear out rapidly to the east on
Friday, but right on its heels a sharp 500 mb trough will swing
across the region late Friday night and Saturday morning. While
there is plenty of broad forcing for ascent associated with this
feature, forecast soundings consistently show a dearth of
available moisture and it may be hard to generate any
precipitation. Nevertheless, given the strength of the system and
lift have maintained chance POPs and light QPF, but impacts should
be minimal.

A brief period of ridging and quiet weather from late Saturday
through Sunday night will be appreciated, however a very large and
powerful cyclone remains on track to impact the Midwest in the
early part of next week. Initially, east southeast winds will
increase substantially on Monday as surface cyclogenesis ramps up
over the High Plains, then a large swath of warm advection induced
precipitation will spread over Iowa around Monday night/Tuesday.
At this time it appears the bulk of this precipitation will fall
as rain, but thermal profiles are still in flux and snow may be
possible in the north at times. Long-range model solutions are
beginning to converge on a scenario in which this initial swath of
precipitation moves through progressively and is followed by a dry
slot, perhaps around Tuesday night/Wednesday, thereafter followed
by the core of the mid-level cyclone moving slowly overhead and
carrying a higher likelihood of snow. Of course this is all nearly
a week out and very much subject to change, so the timing, type,
and amount of precipitation associated with this system is very
much in flux. However, it can be said with a good degree of
confidence that fairly strong winds will impact the area at times
next week, and hazardous weather may occur at times.

Widespread LIFR/IFR conditions are in place across central IA due
to both ceilings and visibilities at 18z, and while there may be
some minor improvement by late afternoon, conditions are expected
to degrade again into the evening as the system approaches with
LIFR conditions likely. Precipitation advancing SW-NE will also
contribute this evening with impactful snow north tonight. The
precip should exit Fri morning, but at least IFR conditions are
expected to linger through the morning in most locations.
