.Snowfall will continue to wind down across the region this
evening, primarily from northwest to southeast. Areas of southeast
Iowa may continue to see periods of moderate snowfall, but too
will wind down over the next few hours. Travel conditions may
remain relatively poor even after snowfall ends due to this
snowfall easily being blown around and across roadways. Replacing
snowfall, and already in place across much of the state, will be 
bitter to dangerous cold and wind chills lasting into Sunday 
morning.

- Another round of Arctic cold likely by mid to late next week.

Surface low pressure is moving across southern Missouri today with
an areas of snow ongoing across a large portion of southern Iowa and
moving into parts of central Iowa. Brisk northern winds originating
from Arctic high pressure that is situated over the Dakotas and
northern Minnesota, has funneled dry and very cold air into northern
Iowa with temperatures currently in the single digits below zero and
dew points in the 5 below to 15 below range. This dry air has been
slowing the northern expansion of the snow and delayed the onset of
snow into central Iowa including the Des Moines metro. A moderate to
heavy band of snow has since setup from near Cedar Rapids to Toledo
and back southwest through the Des Moines metro and towards
Atlantic. Any accumulations north of this band will likely remain an
inch or less, while 2 to 5 inches are expected near this band and
higher amounts to the south where snow has been ongoing for a longer
period. Polk County and the Des Moines metro still could end up with
a tight gradient as well from around 1 inch over the northwest to 3
to 5 inches far southeast. The current heavier band should last
through 3-4 pm before the forcing settles back to the southeast and
much of the accumulating snow will be done by 6 pm or shortly after
except the far southeast where light accumulating snow could linger
towards 9 pm. Several accidents are beginning to occur as even the
light snow is resulting in very slick roadways and combined with the
Arctic cold and dangerous wind chills, it is not a good situation to
become stranded. While much of the public continues to focus on the
snowfall totals, it is the impacts as to why the warning headlines
are out with the poor travel conditions and the dangerous cold.

Brutal wind chill conditions overnight as the Arctic cold continues
to spill into the state. Sky conditions will clear overnight and it
is possible that parts of northwest Iowa have the winds decouple and
diminish as high pressure approaches from the west, so temperatures
could fall there though certainly the lack of snow won't help
temperatures plummet. Otherwise, the wind should remain high enough
combined with temperatures 10 to 15 below zero, to create wind chill
values in the 30 to 35 below range over parts of northern Iowa.
Therefore, will be upgrading to a Wind Chill warning in those areas
with a Wind Chill advisory for the rest of the area. The wind chill
headlines will run through noon on Sunday.

Sunday will be mostly sunny but cold with highs in the single digits
above zero to the teens. The upper flow will become more zonal to
start the week with the surface flow becoming southerly on the back
side of the departing high by Sunday night. This will lead to a
warmer Monday and Tuesday with temperatures rising above freezing
for areas without new snow cover but a bit tempered where there is
snow. Another push of Arctic cold arrives Tuesday night into
Wednesday and this could be accompanied by some light snow and quite
possible another round of wind chill headlines.

Iowa today including KDSM/KOTM where lowering cigs and snow will

northerly wind today will diminish overnight.
