Key Messages:

- Scattered thunderstorms today mainly central and southern Iowa.
- A few strong storms could occur.
- Cooler and less humid the rest of the week along with dry
  conditions.

Surface boundary has entered central Iowa this morning and as of 3
am, extended from near Mason City to Ames and southwest to just
south of Omaha. The upper level boundary near 850 mb is lagging to
the northwest with a ribbon of > 3000 J/kg MUCAPES tied more with
this boundary than cold front at the surface. Some weak convection
has been bubbling this morning near Fort Dodge and Mason City with
more activity ongoing over east central Nebraska. Even further back
to the northwest, an upper level short wave is evident moving into
western South Dakota and Nebraska. That system will bring increasing
kinematic support later today.

CAMs this morning continue to have difficulty with the elevated
convection that is ongoing and the potential into the rest of today.
Minor alterations to the temperature and moisture profiles seem to
be the difference between model solutions having little to no
development to more robust development. The frontogenesis associated
with the boundary near 850 mb will hangup over central Iowa this
morning and this appears to be the focal region for convective
development through 18z. Storm chances should start to align more
west to east in the Highway 30 to Interstate 80 corridor areas this
morning then gradually descend south into the afternoon. The weaker
convective bubbling is likely further north of this region. Surface
based development may be realized further to the east into far
southeast Iowa and into Illinois and proximity forecast soundings
near south of Ottumwa do show a weakening cap this afternoon and
outflow from storms to the east or the mid-level forcing arriving
from the upper short wave could each aid in overcoming the remaining
cap. Otherwise, much of the area's storms should remain elevated.
Considering the amount of instability available, a few storms could
produce large hail. For the forecast, due to the elevated
instability and delay of the drier air arriving, have delayed
precipitation chances into the afternoon further north followed by
dry air rushing in this evening and clearing from north to south.
Cloud cover over central Iowa certainly could have an impact on high
temperatures today.

Little change to the forecast after midnight tonight through much of
the week. A cool night tonight with lows in the 50s. High pressure
will dominate through the week with dew points leading to warm days
and cool nights with highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s and lows in
the 50s to low 60s. The NBM is suggesting temperatures to be a few
degrees warmer by Friday and into the weekend though the latest
deterministic solutions are dropping a cold front through the region
over the weekend though precipitation chances still look to be on
the low side.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be moving across the
region today and be most common vicinity of KDSM and then later at
KOTM. Some activity is possible at other sites to a lesser extent.
Cigs will remain mostly VFR. Wind will shift to northwest for all
sites today then will be light and variable at times overnight
along with clearing skies.

today. Main hazards with any stronger storms would be large hail
and gusty winds.

...A strong thunderstorm will impact portions of northwestern
Madison, southern Guthrie, northern Adair and southwestern Dallas
Counties through 700 AM CDT...

At 623 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 8
miles southwest of Guthrie Center, moving east at 50 mph.

HAZARD...Winds in excess of 30 mph and nickel size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
         unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is
         possible.

This strong thunderstorm will be near...
  Stuart and Panora around 635 AM CDT.

Other locations in the path of this storm include Adel, Dallas
Center, De Soto and Van Meter.

This includes Interstate 80 between mile markers 74 and 112.
