A powerful winter storm is beginning over the region and will last
into Friday night. A significant event is expected, including 
periods of combined blizzard conditions and extreme cold. Travel 
could be dangerous to near impossible at times Thursday and 
Friday. Extreme cold is expected as well with wind chills falling 
to 20 to 40 below zero from late Thursday through the end of the 
week.

A region of snow is moving across central and southern Iowa very
early this morning. This snow will continue to shift off to the
east this morning before diminishing with the main accumulating
snow done by noon. Strong northwest winds with gusts of 25 to
35 mph will be common this morning. The wind will increase more
this afternoon and peak tonight and into Friday with gusts in the
40 to 50 mph range and will create blizzard conditions. 

Wind chill values will fall through the day today and will be in
the 20 to 40 below range before bottoming out at 35 to 45 below
tonight and Friday morning.

A region of snow is moving across southeast Iowa late this 
morning. This snow will shift to the eastern Iowa this afternoon.
Strong northwest winds with gusts of 25 to 35 mph will be common 
over the region for the remainder of today. Winds will peak tonight
and into Friday with gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range and will 
create blizzard conditions over much of the northern half of Iowa.

Wind chill values will fall through the day today and will be in
the 20 to 40 below range before bottoming out at 35 to 45 below
tonight and Friday morning.

Those with holiday travel planned through Friday night are 
strongly encouraged to pay close attention to forecast updates and
road conditions, and prepare accordingly if travel is a must.

Strong northwest winds will persist today with gust in the 40 to

over portions of the northern half of Iowa, especially in rural

drifting of snow remains likely as well.

Wind chill values this morning will be between 35 and 45 below

Still Ongoing Early This Morning...

Strong northwest winds with gusts of 35 to 45 mph early this
morning, will gradually diminish to 25 to 35 during the day
today. This will result in improvement through the day. Still,
blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibilities over the next
several hours will keep travel hazardous. Dangerous wind chills
of 25 to 35 below zero this morning will improve some today and
will be in the 15 to 25 below range this afternoon and tonight.

Discussion:

The much anticipated winter storm set to impact much of the central
US this week is on our doorstep, evidenced by the broad stratus deck
across the plains and upper midwest in GOES-east nighttime
microphysics early this morning. Radar returns remain scattered and
light across South Dakota and into Nebraska early this morning, but
expect precipitation to organize a bit as it begins moving into
northwest Iowa around sunrise. As the warm air advection wing of the
low moves across Iowa the associated isentropic lift will allow
snow to spread across central Iowa. Timing is earlier in recent
model runs, including CAM guidance, and expect that snow will
encompass most of central Iowa by mid afternoon. Initial rates
should remain lighter with less kinematic forcing to start.

By evening the primary forcing arrives in the form of strong 925 to
700 mb frontogenesis. Cross sections indicate a deep DGZ from the
surface to nearly 600 mb along with good saturation through the
layer and moderate lift. Would expect that within this band a period
of higher snowfall rates may be possible. At the same time winds
will increase  as the pressure gradient tightens across Iowa with
gusts over 35 mph overnight and by Thursday gusting 40-50 mph per
latest model soundings. The faster timing of the system means than
most of the snow will finish falling and exit east by 18z Thursday,
however that is just half the story. The winds will remain strong
with significant blowing of snow leading to visibility reductions
and near white out conditions likely at times. Even with gusts
occurring after the snow has finished falling, the light and
fluffy snow will be incredibly easy to loft. While blizzard
conditions are almost guaranteed, have kept the current Winter
Storm Warning in order to provide a consistent message after
collaboration with surrounding offices. Further consideration
will be given on the day shift.

Bitter cold will settle in with the gusty winds, as temperatures
across the area remain below zero from Wednesday night through
Saturday, though even then it will only be single digits above zero.
With overnight lows in the -10 to 20 range coincident with gusty
winds, wind chills overnight Thursday and Friday nights will
approach the -30 to -40 range. This is life threatening cold for
anyone caught outside, including stranded motorists. Winds remain
breezy through Friday and blowing snow with very poor visibility
will continue through the day. An important reminder that
visibility in town is usually much better than in rural areas.
While in town it may appear okay to travel on Friday, conditions
outside of city limits will likely remain very dangerous. Travel
is strongly discouraged until at least Saturday when winds
diminish.

Temperatures moderate some into Christmas Day, though still well
below normal, with highs returning to the teens and 20s. A weak
shortwave looks to pass across the area Christmas day and night,
though any snow accumulations look to remain fairly light. Details
on this will be further refined in the coming days.

Conditions will deteriorate rapidly today with the onset of snow
from northwest to southeast. By afternoon expect visibility and
ceilings reduced to IFR criteria at most sites with further
reduction to LIFR possible by this evening. Conditions will last
through the TAF period with snow tapering off though Thursday
morning, however blowing snow from gusty NW winds will continue to
significantly reduce visibility beyond the current TAF period.
