.SHORT TERM...(This afternoon through Wednesday night)
Issued at 1200 PM CST Tue Dec 20 2022

Midday visible satellite imagery revealed a clear sky across all
of SW KS, with one small patch of snowcover persisting over
southwest Pratt county. Shallow cold air snuck in very
aggressively this morning (min temperature of 2 at DDC), and
observation sites are struggling through the teens at midday. The
northeast half of SW KS is expected to fail to reach freezing this
afternoon, despite full sunshine, as the cold airmass is locked
in.  Light winds and poor mixing will continue through sunset,
mainly with a light easterly component.

Clouds will increase rapidly tonight, in response to warm/moist
advection. Surface dewpoints will climb overnight, and southeast
winds will establish at 10-20 mph, which will allow temperatures
to be much milder at sunrise Wednesday. Temperatures will probably
fall rapidly to the teens this evening after sunset with strong
radiational cooling, then climb back into the 20s overnight. Some
patchy freezing drizzle is possible from this stratus deck toward
6 am, especially north of Dodge City, as hinted at by 12z NAM's
light drizzle QPF signature. Any impacts should be very limited,
and expect most of the increased moisture to manifest itself as
the low stratus deck.

Warm advection will continue to attempt to push out the cold air
on Wednesday. South winds will average 10-20 mph, with stratus
expected to erode from west to east. Models show much warmer air
arriving in the southwest counties on SWly downslope, while other
models showing the residual shallow cold air holding firm across
eastern zones. Both model camps are likely correct, and the
result will be a large temperature gradient across SW KS Wednesday
afternoon. Max temperatures will range from mid 30s northeast to
upper 50s southwest, but wouldn't be surprised if the gradient
ends up being 20s east and 60s southwest.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Monday)
Issued at 337 AM CST Tue Dec 20 2022

A strong amplifying upper level trough will approach the high
plains Wednesday night. The models bring warmer air back into
western Kansas during the afternoon Wednesday ahead of the front,
with 40s and lower 50s for highs. But with not much of a downslope
component from Dodge City east to Stafford, Hays and Pratt, it
may stay cooler in this area than currently forecast.

A very strong surge of arctic air is still expected Wednesday
night. Wind chills will reach as low as -25 to -40 by Thursday
morning. These values will rival the cold outbreak on February 1,
2001 when the temperature was -4F and wind was 32 mph sustained,
giving a wind chill of -36. The current wind chill watch will
need to be upgraded to a warning. Dry snow and blowing snow are
likely between 06 and 12 UTC Thursday as the arctic air pours in.
However, due to the strong cold advection, high static stability
will result in lesser lift for a given amount of forcing. Expect
light snow accumulations ranging from an inch or two at Hays to
flurries at Ulysses and Liberal. Thursday night, temperatures
could be well below zero if there is snow cover and winds go
light. But it looks like winds will stay up around 10 kts. This
will create dangerous wind chills persisting through Friday
morning.

The next upper level tough will stay well north and east of
Kansas and the associated cold surge will also stay east and
north. Thus, after cold weather persisting into Saturday, expect
high temperatures in the 40s and 50s starting Sunday. This pattern
looks dry through the end of the month.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)
Issued at 1014 AM CST Tue Dec 20 2022

Excellent flying weather will continue through 00z Wed, with
VFR/SKC and light winds. After sunset through 12z Wed, winds will
trend SEly and increase to 10-15 kts. Consensus of short term
models forecasts widespread IFR stratus ceilings at all airports
in the 12-15z Wed timeframe, in response to increasing warm air
advection. Some reduced visibility in BR is possible as well, but
expecting mostly a stratus deck. Stratus will be most fleeting at
GCK, and most prevalent at HYS, where it may hold for much of
daylight Wednesday. Expecting stratus to erode from west to east
on Wednesday, with south winds averaging 10-20 kts.

An intense arctic cold front will sweep through the airports
00-06z Thu. Wind gusts to near 50 kts and areas of blowing dust
are expected with this frontal passage. Reduced visibility in snow
and blowing snow is expected at HYS by 03z Thu.
