Gusty south to southwest winds have been present with blowing
dust for several areas this afternoon. Dry conditions also
continue to be present across the region. Visibility obscurities
are likely until the winds begin to dissipate for areas near
sunset. The gusty winds will persist across the northern NE
Panhandle this evening and into the early overnight hours as
strong winds mix down to the surface. A stray shower may occur
near and along the Pine Ridge this evening, but nothing more than
a trace to a hundredth of QPF is likely.
Strong WAA will be present at 700/850mb by tomorrow morning as
upper level ridging persists ahead of the strong weather system
moving toward the area from the west. Morning cloud cover will
limit temperatures through approximately 15Z. After this point,
areas across the NE Panhandle will see the cloud cover erode, and
temperatures will rapidly rise. Likely will see near record
warmth, especially the southern NE Panhandle by Friday afternoon.
Additionally, gusty winds are expected across a majority of the
CWA as a strong surface low rapidly intensifies by 8-14mb in a
short time frame of 6-12 hours Friday. This combined with very dry
conditions will create elevated to critical fire weather concerns,
especially east of the Laramie Range. Have kept the Red Flag
Warning for Friday to reflect this. It is important to note that
if the cloud cover burns off more quickly in areas that are under
the RFW Friday, we could see critical to potentially extreme fire
weather conditions, similar to our neighbors to the south in
Northern CO/NM. Temperatures for daytime highs will be in the 70s
and 80s, east of the Laramie Range. West of the Laramie Range will
see highs in the 50s and 60s, especially the higher terrain.
Increasing clouds will occur from west to east. It will take some
time for the lower levels of the atmosphere to saturday by Friday
afternoon/evening before rain showers occur. There is weak
instability across the far east and northern tier of the NE
Panhandle by late afternoon to early evening, where 500-1000 J/kg
of CAPE exists. SPC has a marginal to slight risk eclipsing our
borders in NE, but our expectation is that the convection will
occur just to the east. Nonetheless, a few rumbles of thunder can
be expected east of the Laramie Range on Friday evening.
Rain will transition to snow quickly overnight, from northwest to
southeast behind the strong cold front. A strong surface low
pressure near 980mb is modeled to occlude as it treks from our CWA
to the Dakotas Saturday. Areas in the higher terrain of the
mountain ranges, and also in our northern forecast zones of SE WY
have the potential to see high snowfall accumulation rates greater
than 1" per hour overnight. The snow showers will dissipate in
regard to intensity on Saturday, but the winds will pick up
substantially. This has warranted a Winter Storm Watch where the
heaviest, wet snow showers will be possible. Near blizzard
conditions could be possible at times in the heaviest snow showers
while combined with the strong winds. Our wind prone corridors
near ARL and the I-80 Summit also have the potential to see strong
wind gusts in excess of 60mph on Saturday. Have gone with a High
Wind Watch to reflect this as well. Areas in the southern NE
Panhandle may not see a transition from rain to snow due to
temperatures being warm enough to keep it as rain through portions
of Saturday. Expect the wind gusts to remain elevated across the
area, especially in our northern zones of SE WY and the northern
NE Panhandle through Sunday morning.

The main concern with this portion of the forecast is the wind
potential on Sunday.
The closed upper low will most likely be slow to exit the area
into the northern Plains. This will result in another period of
strong winds on Sunday especially east of the I-25 corridor. We
did bump up winds to the 75-90th percentile of the NBM during this
time. Otherwise, a very dry and mild period is expected next week
as the upper level ridge sets up camp over the region.

VFR conditions and gusty winds are expected until near 06Z tonight
as the winds shift and some MVFR to IFR clouds move into the
Nebraska panhandle terminals. There is some uncertainty as to how
long the lower clouds are going to linger, but currently in the
forecast we have the ceilings slowly raising to MVFR then VFR
between 14 and 19Z. Gusty winds can be expected through the next
24 hours everywhere.

Critical fire weather conditions will be in place across the area
tomorrow as the surface low cranks up over central Wyoming. This
will continue to draw in strong south-southeast winds across
the southern Nebraska panhandle and very dry conditions. Thus, Red
Flag Warnings will continue to be in effect tomorrow. This weekend
will be cold and blustery across most of the area as the strong
upper disturbance moves through the region. Near critical fire
weather conditions will once again be in place next week as the
upper level ridge settles over the area. However, wind speeds
should be a bit lighter especially over the Nebraska panhandle.
