.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

KEY MESSAGES:
1) Blizzard Warnings have been issued for Monday evening through
Wednesday for Converse, Niobrara, Northern Sioux, and Dawes
Counties. Snow accumulations 6 to 12 inches likely with 12 to 16
inches in the Pine Ridge area. Wind gusts up to 55 mph are possible
Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. The combination of strong winds
and heavy snowfall will create hazardous blizzard conditions.
2) Blizzard Watches have been expanded to include the rest of the
Nebraska panhandle, Platte, Goshen, and eastern Laramie County. The
main uncertainty remains in total snowfall.
3) Winter Storm Watches are in effect for the Laramie Range, South
Laramie Range Foothills, and Carbon County. Uncertainty remains in
total snowfall amounts.
DISCUSSION: Decided to issue Blizzard Warnings for areas that we are
most confident in receiving heavy snowfall and gusty winds between
Monday night and Wednesday with the most hazardous time period being
early Tuesday morning through Tuesday night. In addition, expanded
Winter Storm Watches to include more of southeast Wyoming and the
rest of the Nebraska panhandle. As hi-res guidance has started
coming in for the beginning of the event it is appearing like areas
west of the Laramie Range will receive more stratiform snowfall
whereas the areas east of the Laramie Range will receive some
stratiform and some convective snowfall. Wherever the convective
snowfall sets up will have much higher snowfall rates and result in
locally higher amounts. However, due to the very high wind gusts
there will be significant drifting of snow, especially along
northern slopes with north to northwest winds. These north to
northwest winds have helped the snow totals remain consistent across
the Pine Ridge due to the upslope direction.
Looking at past events similar to this one, a significant factor
will be if the moisture makes it into the forecast area or if the
dry-slot will take over. One situation that would have the majority
of the forecast area in a drier solution would be if the
thunderstorms develop in west/central Kansas before the moisture can
reach eastern Wyoming and the central/southern Nebraska panhandle.
As of right now, the forecast is if the moisture makes it into east-
central Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle, how much snow we are
realistically looking at.
The impacts will likely begin Monday afternoon over western portions
of the forecast area (Carbon County) and spread eastward over Monday
evening and night. Winds will begin to increase Monday night as the
snow is moving through with the worst of the conditions most likely
being throughout the day Tuesday as wind gusts up to 50 mph are
possible across portions of east central Wyoming and the Nebraska
panhandle. Forecast snow totals have remained near ensemble means,
which have trended slightly higher than yesterday due to the slight
westward shift of the low location. A sharp gradient remains between
potential 2 to 5 inches along the WY/CO border and 6 to 12 inches in
that area just south of the North Platte River valley.
Temperatures drop drastically lower than what we have been seeing
with high temperatures Monday afternoon in the 30s and 40s, dropping
to lows in the single digits and low teens as the arctic front
quickly drops through southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle.
Tuesday and Wednesday stay very cold with high temperatures in the
teens and 20s and low temperatures single digits to teens. As winds
remain elevated following the system, even once the falling snow has
stopped, blowing snow may become a major concern, especially in
areas that receive a fresh snowpack.

Snow coming to an end Wednesday evening from west to east as
winter storm low continue to track east into Iowa. Strong
northwest winds continuing east of the Laramie Range with gusts
40-45 mph continuing...so blowing snow impacts likely to be
continuing Wednesday night into Thursday.
CWA stays in fast northwest flow through the rest of the week.
Clipper system Thursday night into Thursday could bring another
round of light snow west of the Laramie Range. Very cold 700mb
temperatures of -14 to -17C will keep surface temperatures pretty
cold. Continued to undercut NBM guidance by 3-5 degrees on
temperatures.
We do not get a break in the cold/fast northwest flow through the
weekend. In fact...GFS brings another clipper system into eastern
Wyoming Friday night into Saturday with 700mb temperatures down
to -19 to -20C Saturday. Continued undercutting NBM
guidance...but may be way too warm. If winds ease with a
widespread snowpack...overnight lows may be 10-15 degrees colder
than advertised temperatures.

wind shear at Rawlins until 11Z. Wind gusts to 23 knots at
Cheyenne after 17Z, to 20 knots at Laramie from 18Z to 00Z, and to
22 knots at Rawlins until 11Z.
Nebraska TAFS...VFR until 23Z, then IFR in snow and fog. Wind
gusts to 25 knots at Scottsbluff, Chadron and Alliance after 17Z,
with gusts to 25 knots at Sidney after 01Z.
