Gradients are easing this evening and winds have eased in the wind
prone areas temporarily. Went ahead and cancelled High Wind
Warnings for this evening. Gradients increase once again Monday
afternoon and continue through Tuesday as the upper ridge flattens
in response to a trough tracking across Montana. GFS wins continue
to show a widespread strong wind event starting in the wind prone
areas Monday afternoon...continuing through Tuesday evening. Went
ahead and issued a High Wind Watch for the wind prone areas. These
strong winds are likely going to impact much of southeast WYoming
Tuesday. For now...will let later shifts determine which zones
need to be added outside the wind prone areas. Updates have been
sent.

.SHORT TERM...(Late this afternoon through Tuesday)
Issued at 230 PM MST Sun Dec 25 2022

Afternoon GOES WV loop showed a shortwave/clipper trough moving to the
southeast across the eastern Dakotas. A surface low was located along
the ND/SD border with a warm front to the south and a cold front from
western ND into northern MT. A north to south lee side trough just
east of the Laramie Range with the tighter low level pressure gradient
along and west of the trough. Southeast WY was situated under the
descending branch of a 155kt H25 speed, maximizing downward motion
of 55-65kt H75 winds to the surface. Wind gusts in the wind-prone
zones were hitting high wind criteria (60-70 MPH), with Cheyenne
gusting to 61 MPH just before 11 AM. High Wind Warnings will remain
in effect for WY Zone 106 (Bordeaux) until 5 PM, WY Zone 118 (Cheyenne)
until 6 PM, and WY Zones 110 (Arlington), 116 (I-80 Summit) and 117
(South Laramie Range Foothills) until 11 PM. Per the recent high-res
models, radar trends since midday showed some light showers developing
along and north of the Platte River Valley west to Wheatland and north
of Albany. These showers were producing very light precipitation as
they move south- southeast toward the I-80 corridor. Snow showers
will become more prevalent over the higher terrain of Carbon and
Albany counties through the remainder of the afternoon. Afternoon
temperatures were milder, especially over the NE Panhandle, compared
to yesterday. Readings ranged from the mid 30s to mid 40s.

Strong winds will be the primary forecast concern both early and later
in the short term forecast period.

The current high wind episode will come to an end late this afternoon
through this evening as the winds aloft slowly diminish and low level
pressure gradients weaken with the exit of the upper level jet max.
Snow showers will end this evening for lower elevations, but linger
into late tonight for the Snowy and Sierra Madre mountains. An
additional two to four inches is possible. Monday through Tuesday
morning will be dry. Snow showers will redevelop over western and
southern Carbon County ahead of the next Pacific trough and cold front
Tuesday afternoon.

A period of stronger and more impactful winds begins early Monday
evening over the northern/central Laramie Range, the North Snowy Range
Foothills Monday night, and most areas along and west of the I-25
corridor. 700-800mb flow increases from 55-60kt Monday night, to
70-80kt over the northern/central Laramie Range into Converse County,
as well as central/northern Carbon County Tuesday. The 06Z run of
the in-house random forest high wind probabilities peak in the 60-80
percent range for the I-80 Summit, Arlington and Bordeaux, with 40-60
percent for Coleman and Vedauwoo. With the ongoing high wind episode
playing out today, and to avoid confusion, decided to forego issuing
high wind headlines for Monday night/Tuesday and pass the torch to
the evening and mid shifts to make that decision.

700mb temperatures will slowly rise through the short term with
temperatures averaging 10-15 degrees above normal Tuesday. Expect
daytime highs in the 30s and 40s Monday and 40s to mid 50s Tuesday.
Nighttime lows in the teens and 20s tonight will moderate to the
20s and 30s Monday night.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday)

An active Pacific storm track next week will lead to a few weather
systems potentially impacting the area...

* The first system is likely Wednesday into Thursday, bringing
  strong winds followed by a chance for snow.
* Another system could open up the New Year next weekend, with more
  wind and snow possible, although confidence is lower considering
  the lead time.

Overall, no major changes to the prior forecast package. While the
pattern remains active, it doesn't look nearly as impactful as the
two extreme events our area endured in each of the last two weeks. A
broad, moisture-laden Pacific trough will approach the area Tuesday
night into Wednesday. Tightening height gradients combined with
persistent, broad lee troughing at the surface underneath the
diffluent flow aloft will likely keep strong winds going through
Tuesday night for the wind prone areas, gradually coming down
towards Wednesday morning as the trough digs into the southwest. A
jet streak overhead does not look very impressive in terms of
strength, but will likely contribute some descending motion Tuesday
night when its right exit region is positioned overhead. As this
synoptic forcing wanes into Wednesday, expect high winds to relent
somewhat. However, this flow is expected to tap into fairly abundant
moisture. GEFS 50th percentile PWATs climb to around 0.45 inches
over much of the area by 00Z Wednesday, which is well above normal
for this time of year. Moist, southwest flow will strongly favor the
Sierra Madre mountains for snowfall, so looking at moderate to heavy
snowfall possible there Tuesday night and Wednesday as the core of the
moisture plume shifts overhead.

For Wednesday into Thursday, the trough axis moves through our area,
bringing our warm spell to an end. Luckily, this temperature drop
doesn't look even remotely close to as significant as the cold we've
endured the last few weeks. As the jet core shifts east, models show
some disorganized lee cyclogenesis over Colorado on Wednesday into
Wednesday night. This will transition from the broader lee troughing
extending all the way from Montana towards Colorado on Tuesday to
a potentially more localized surface low in Colorado. Such a
development could allow precipitation to expand out of the mountains
and into the high plains late Wednesday into Wednesday night. Models
lack a clear positioning of a plains surface high to enhance low-
level upslope flow, but there could be some mid- level isentropic
lift in this time period that would help contribute to precipitation.
The potential window for lift is fairly short though, as models
show descending motion and northwest downslope winds developing by
Thursday morning. The exact amounts and location of any plains snowfall
is fairly uncertain still though. The GFS develops the 700-mb low
a little further north, putting the overrunning flow over our northern
and western counties, while the ECMWF gives light snow to a more
widespread area. Most of the ensembles appear to be closer to the
further south ECMWF solution, but it's still early. For now, the
forecast reflects a chance for snow over much of the area (increased
from NBM which came in rather dry this time), but kept PoPs in the
20-30% range outside of the mountains.

Progressive flow will hold through the second half of the week into
next weekend, with intermittent weak troughing and ridging. The
deterministic models have more details showing up, but the ensembles
paint a blurrier picture. Overall, expecting roughly near to slightly
above average temperatures Thursday through Saturday with breezy
conditions likely. The system in the next Sunday-ish time frame does
appear to have better model consensus per ensemble guidance. Ensemble
means favor another upper level low diving into the southwest, with
a similar outcome to the midweek system possible. However, given the
extended lead time, confidence is fairly low. NBM PoPs came in fairly
aggressive with this round, likely pulling from the fairly aggressive
ECMWF ensembles. Even though it is on Day 7, about 3/4 of the ensemble
members have appreciable precipitation Sunday into Monday at KCYS.
Will need to monitor this system in the coming days.

Low to mid level clouds will persist throughout the area overnight.
With the lower clouds comes the chance of light snow showers in and
around KCYS and KLAR through the early morning hours. CIGs are
likely to stay VFR at southeast Wyoming terminals overnight,
however, cannot rule out brief periods of MVFR. Will have to watch
KCDR and KAIA late tonight/early Monday morning as a backdoor front
from a clipper system in the Dakotas may drop conditions down to
IFR. Low CIGs at these terminals will likely cause the IFR
conditions, however there is medium confidence for BR to occur as
well. Satellite already shows low stratus creeping slowly westward
towards KCDR and KAIA. Conditions should improve by mid to late
morning.

Lingering lower elevation snow cover, including additional mountain
snowfall this week, will limit fire weather concerns. It will be breezy
to windy, with the strongest winds affecting the wind-prone areas of
Southeast Wyoming. Minimum relative humidities will remain above
critical thresholds through the week. Warmer temperatures Monday and
Tuesday will trend gradually cooler for the latter part of the week,
with chances for light precipitation.
