expire on time for the wind prone areas. Gusts of 45 to 55 MPH may
continue through this afternoon, but will handle that with an SPS

prone areas tonight ahead of the next surge of cold arctic air for
Monday.

Strong winds are the primary concern in the short term.
Currently...Arctic boundary lays across central
Nebraska...northwest to near Newcastle...up into central Montana
this morning. 1032mb surface high continues over northwestern
Colorado. Skies pretty much clear over the CWA...though a few mid
level clouds are start to show up just south of the front in
Converse and Niobrara Counties. More dense cloud cover over
western Montana is moving southeast along the front.
As for winds this morning...they area elevated at Bordeaux and
Arlington. Bordeaux just reported a gust to 56 mph...while
Arlington sensors have been around the mid and upper 40 mph range.
Current Craig to Casper 850/700mb height gradients are peaking
right now at 72/46mtrs. If winds are going to hit warning
levels...it will happen in the next few hours. Will keep current
wind warnings going for Bordeaux and Arlington to see what happens
over the next few hours.
Arctic boundary continues its southwest progression through 18Z
this morning. By 18Z...GFS showing the front along a line from
roughly Bridgeport to Wheatland to around Casper. By 00Z...front
looks to make it into northeast Colorado...to just west of
Cheyenne to Casper. Pretty nice temperatures south of the
front...still looking at near 40 at Cheyenne this afternoon. North
and east of the front though...look for falling temperatures after
passage. Morning temperatures will be the highs across the
northern Panhandle into east central Wyoming.
Front is going to begin moving east this evening as westerly winds
west of the front begin to strengthen GFS by 09Z tonight forecast
700mb winds westerly at 45kts with 750mb winds near 50kts. Craig
to Casper 850/700mb height gradients back up near 70/50mtrs after
09Z. Decided to issue a High Wind Watch for Monday morning 09Z to
00Z Tuesday for Arlington...the south Laramie Range and eastern
foothills to account for these increasing winds. Do not have a
good feeling on Bordeaux as they will be very near that front...so
decided to keep them out of the watch for now. Dayshift may want
to take another look at Bordeaux before upgrading to warnings
later today.
Arctic front remains along the east slopes of the Laramie Range
Tuesday. Likely will be dealing with strong winds around Arlington
west of the front for Tuesday as well. ECMWF and GFS beginning to
show some light snow developing over the Snowy and Sierra Madre
Ranges for Tuesday afternoon and evening.

KEY MESSAGES:
1) Increasing confidence of the timing and impacts of High
Winds and Extreme Cold in the long term forecast period.
2) Potential for a brief High Wind event Wednesday ahead of the
arctic frontal passage.
3) Snowfall possible Wednesday and Thursday with limited
accumulations expected at lower elevations. Best chance for
accumulating snowfall above 7500 feet.
TEMPERATURES/WIND CHILLS: Only a few changes to the forecast since
yesterday. Temperatures have trended a few degrees colder with the
arctic front pushing southwest through the day Wednesday. GFS and
ECMWF Ensembles still have a wide spread of possibilities. For
example, the Thursday morning low temperatures according to ECMWF
Ensemble members could be anywhere from 15 deg F to -33 deg F.
That's a 48 degree spread! However Ensembles are overall trending
toward the colder solutions behind the front, leaving the warmer
solutions as outliers. Therefore, trended the forecast temperatures
Wednesday toward the NBM 50th percentile and warmer solutions, then
Thursday behind the front, trended the forecast temperatures more
towards the NBM 25th percentile and the colder solutions. Overall,
kept temperatures near the average of the ECMWF and GFS Ensemble
means. Coldest temperatures and wind chills are expected Wednesday
night through Thursday night with wind chills -30 to -40+ deg F
Thursday morning. Unfortunately the areas that are most likely to
experience the most extreme cold are the areas that were recently
impacted by the blizzard, east-central Wyoming and the Nebraska
panhandle. The temperatures are currently forecast to rebound back
up to teens and 20s by Friday afternoon, warming up even more going
into Christmas Eve and Christmas.
SNOW: As the arctic front moves through there is a chance for
scattered snow showers with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation in
valleys/lower elevations. The mountains have a better chance for
higher accumulations due to orographic enhancement. Currently in the
forecast is 6 to 10 inches in the Snowy Mountains and 8 to 12 inches
in the Sierra Madre Mountains. Snow is most likely to begin at lower
elevations (areas outside of the Snowy and Sierra Madre Mountains)
Wednesday morning, becoming more widespread by Wednesday afternoon.
A limiting factor for snowfall will be the winds turning back
westerly at the surface Wednesday afternoon. As westerly is a
downslope direction for most areas east of the Laramie Range, the
downslope winds will warm and dry the air, which is not conducive to
snow shower formation.
WIND: To nobody's surprise, winds will remain elevated through most
the long term forecast period. There are two main time periods for
the highest winds: Tuesday night through Wednesday night and
Thursday night through Saturday. In-house models show elevated, 45
to 55 mph winds possible in areas near Arlington and the I-80 Summit
Tuesday night through Wednesday night. Following the arctic front,
depending on how far southwest it drops, areas it has already passed
through will experience weaker winds, but still breezy. For this
reason Bordeaux will likely not have high winds during this first
period due to the higher likelihood the arctic front will push past
the Laramie Range. The second High Wind period, Thursday night
through Saturday, looks to be the more impactful High Wind period.
As the trough pushes back east and a fast-moving shortwave clips the
northern end of our forecast area, pressure gradients remain
elevated, increasing the high wind potential. In-house models are
currently showing the possibility of 70+ mph wind gusts in wind-
prone areas of southeast Wyoming. However, winds may spread outside
of wind-prone areas due to the westerly, downsloping direction.

VFR conditions likely for southeastern Wyoming through the
forecast period, with possible IFR conditions for the Nebraska
Panhandle beginning after 23z today. Weather impacts are possible
today into tomorrow from a cold front digging to the
east/southeast across the CWA, bringing with it stronger winds for
southeastern Wyoming and reduced ceilings/visibilities for the
Nebraska Panhandle. Overall, front appears mostly dry with
precipitable water values remaining below average. Therefore,
kept any precipitation groups out of this TAF issuance, and mostly
mist will be observed. Went ahead and started trending ceilings
and visibilities into the IFR category for KCDR, KSNY, and KAIA
beginning as early as 23z for KCDR and later for more southern
terminals.

Minimal fire weather concerns through the upcoming week with
existing snowpack and cold temperatures. A dry arctic front is set
to move south out of the Dakotas this afternoon that will switch
winds east and north of the front to the northeast. West and south
of the front...westerly winds will prevail...staying strong in the
wind prone areas of southeast Wyoming. This front will meander
east to west over the next several days. A stronger arctic
boundary set to move south into the area Wednesday
afternoon...bringing fairly widespread light snow and brutally
cold temperatures to most areas.
