Key Impact Messages:
1) Blizzard conditions continue. The main areas of concern is
across the northern Nebraska Panhandle where Blizzard Warning
remain in affect. Expect blowing and drifting snow across these
areas with wind gusts up to 50 mph.
2). Winter Weather Advisories remain in affect for eastern Wyoming
and the southern Nebraska Panhandle for blowing snow concerns.
Winds are expected to increase today with gusts in the 40 to 45
mph range.
3) Light valley snow possible for portions of Carbon and Albany
counties with better chances in the mountains.
Weather Details: The region is 36 hrs removed from the brunt
impacts we experienced as the winter storm moved through our
region, and yet we are still seeing impacts. This is caused by the
storm system stalling out across the Dakotas and remaining very
strong as evident by tight gradients across much of the upper
midwest. This is creating persistent strong, gusty north to
northwest winds over much of the region. While we have had some
brief lulls in the winds since Tuesday, winds have remained above
30 mph in the lulls, which is enough to create blowing snow in
areas that saw accumulating snow over 4". Strong winds were
observed again today, especially across the south Laramie Range,
Laramie county and across the Nebraska Panhandle. The winds across
the Nebraska Panhandle have continued to cause blowing and
drifting snow concerns. Winds will once again diminish through
the early morning hours before ramping back up by the late morning
hours. Winds should stay below high wind warnings but sporadic
gusts up to 55 mph could be possible in some locations.
The storm system will begin to shift eastward today and by the
evening, we should finally see diminishing winds and an end to the
winter storm impacts with Friday looking like a much needed quiet
weather day across most of the region. The active weather will be
confined to Carbon, Albany and the mountains as a weak shortwave
moves through. Some light snow will be possible with moderate
snowfall in the mountains. Currently the forecast has totals below
any winter weather highlight criteria so not planning on issuing
any hazards in this forecast package.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday through next Wednesday)

1) Elevated to High Winds possible over the weekend, especially in
wind prone areas of southeast Wyoming.
2) Next arctic cold front is expected to move through Wednesday
and Thursday with High Winds, Extreme Cold, and Snowfall possible.
DISCUSSION: Cold and windy is the main story of the long term
forecast period with multiple periods of elevated to high winds
possible. Zonal flow will return across all of southeast Wyoming and
the Nebraska panhandle, and winds will be decreasing in areas east
of the Laramie Range. However, areas west of the Laramie Range will
see strong 700 mb flow return with the GFS showing 45 to 50 knot
westerly winds. Northwest flow aloft will keep temperatures cold
during this time with highs in the upper teens to low 30s and lows
near -5 to 10 degrees.
Global models are showing the polar jet dipping down once again into
the area Wednesday, dropping temperatures to extremely cold,
increasing High Wind chances, and bringing the possibility of snow
showers once again. NBM v4.1 is currently showing a 30 to 40 percent
chance of High Temperatures below zero in portions of the Nebraska
panhandle Thursday. If this pattern holds, it would not be
surprising to see Wind Chill Advisories to Warnings issued.

Strong northwest winds and resultant blowing snow will continue
to produce aviation concerns today. In the Nebraska panhandle,
there still seems to be enough snow to blow around to produce IFR
conditions at KCDR and KAIA. VIS reductions are also probable at
KBFF and KSNY due to BLSN with MVFR likely and IFR possible, but
may be more prone to fluctuation than further north.
Additionally, some periodic low CIGs in MVFR territory will likely
impact NE panhandle terminals through the TAF period. Gusty winds
are likely through the entire period, with gusts in the 35 to 45
knot range expected at all Nebraska terminals.
Wyoming will see better flight conditions, with mostly VFR, though
KRWL may see some drops in VIS/CIG with snow showers moving
through. KLAR could approach MVFR CIGs on occasion, but confidence
is low. Otherwise, continued gusty winds through the period. KCYS
may see a period of stronger winds develop after midnight through
early Friday morning. Going with 40 knots in the TAF now, but
can't rule out gusts to 50+knots.

In the wake of the winter storm, much of the region
received measurable snow. Temperatures are expected to be well
below freezing into the weekend so current snowpack will stick
around for several days, keeping fire weather concerns low. Gusty
winds across much of SE Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle will
continue into the weekend with gusts in the 35 to 40 mph range.
