Quick update to cancel the Ground Blizzard Warning for the I-80
Summit and Arlington. Winds were gusting 35 to 45 MPH along I-80
between Cheyenne and Rawlins early this morning. However, WYDOT
webcams showed visibility and road conditions improving. Some patchy
blowing snow will continue this morning.

Today...Inherited wind chill advisories look on track across the
southern Nebraska Panhandle where wind chills continue around 20
degrees below zero near Sidney. However, we have decided to cancel
the advisory for the Laramie Valley as actual temperatures have
slowly risen at Laramie. Winds continue to gust near 50 mph at
Arlington and over the I-80 Summit, and although webcams show
minimal blowing snow, will continue the Ground Blizzard Warning for
these locations as still expect areas of blowing snow and reduced
visibilities.
As the flow aloft backs to west southwest, a surface lee trough will
continue to develop, helping to erode the colder airmass, and
producing a warmer day with maximum temperatures reaching the 30s at
most lower elevations, and have compromised between the MET and MAV
guidance maxima.
Tonight...Next challenge will be the likelihood of increasing winds
tonight for our wind prone locations. Local in house guidance, along
with progged mid level winds nearing 60 knots suggests another
likely high wind event for Arlington, the I-80 Summit and Bordeaux
beginning this evening and thus we have hoisted a High Wind Watch
for these locations beginning at mid evening. A bit more mixing will
limit the cooling overnight especially along and near the mountains.
Thursday...Southwest flow aloft strengthens even moreso, and with
700 mb wind speeds approaching 60 to 70 knots and in house guidance
looking more favorable, strong winds look likely to continue for
Arlington, the I-80 Summit and Bordeaux. Later shifts will need to
monitor the possibility of strong winds for portions of Carbon
County and Rawlins based on low level gradients. One benefit of the
gusty winds will be warmer temperatures with 700 mb temperatures
approaching -1 Celsius.
Thursday night...Southwest winds aloft strengthen even further in
advance of the next approaching shortwave trough aloft and its
associated cold front, and with 700 mb winds near 70 knots and
progged in house guidance, will continue the High Wind Watch for our
wind prone locations. Chances for snow will develop late with the
approaching cold front across our western counties.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Tuesday)

All models are in reasonable agreement through this weekend showing a
rather active weather pattern with nearly continuous strong gusty
winds over portions of southeast Wyoming (and more widespread on
Friday, including western Nebraska), and a nuisance back-door
arctic cold front over the high plains potentially impacting
western Nebraska and southeast Wyoming east of the I-25 corridor
Friday and possibly once again early next week.
Primary forecast concern during the medium to long range will be
Friday's Pacific upper level trough and associated strong cold
front(s) forecast to push across the area late Friday
morning/early Friday afternoon. This wind event looks like a
classic Bora/mountain wave event with strong gap winds ahead of
the front. Based on current guidance and in-house models, High
Wind Watches/warnings will likely be needed for most of southeast
Wyoming and even portions of western Nebraska given strong
subsidence and 700mb winds between 65 to 75 knots. Will have to
watch the position and depth of the arctic cold front across the
northern plains. The 00z GFS shows the leading edge of this front
digging south into the northern Nebraska Panhandle and stalling.
This front may not only result in weaker winds later in the day, but
also some threat of light snow and/or fog along with much colder
temperatures than the current forecast shows. Kept the southern
panhandle of Nebraska very windy with gusts over 50 mph, but lowered
winds further north. There is a chance for this arctic front to
slide further south and west towards the I-25 corridor late Friday
and Friday night, but not very confident with that solution at this
time. Kept high temperatures near or slightly below average with
very cold low temperatures in the single digits for early Saturday
morning. Best chance for snowfall appears to be on Friday for
central Wyoming and the southeast Wyoming mountains, so kept POP
moderate to high (50 to 80 percent) with accumulating snow possible
west of I-25 through Friday afternoon. Will have to monitor the
arctic front to the east for potential snowfall across the eastern
high plains.
For Sunday and into early next week, models show drier conditions
outside of the mountains as an active jet stream will remain near
the Wyoming/Colorado border through the period. Therefore, strong
winds are possible nearly every day, especially across the wind
prone areas with a good indicate of persistent upslope accumulating
snow across the mountains. The GFS and NH Canadian model are
showing the arctic cold front boundary pushing southward again
late next Monday and Monday night with strong north/northwest flow
aloft into the middle part of next week. Kept daytime and
overnight temperatures slightly below normal next week with highs
struggling to reach the mid 30s (west of I-25) to low 40s (east of
I-25)
