Updated current forecast for today to allow the High Wind Warning
to expire at Bordeaux, and to adjust temperatures trends to mirror
current obs trends. Attention then shifts to the potent upper
level trough forecast to push southeast across the region tonight,
and the next High Wind event for Sunday and Sunday night. Updates
have been sent.

.SHORT TERM...(Today - Sunday Night)
Issued at 341 AM MST Sat Nov 26 2022

An active 24-48 hours ahead across portions of southeast Wyoming &
the western Nebraska Panhandle with multiple disturbances expected
to bring the potential localized snow impacts later this afternoon
and evening, followed by potentially widespread strong winds later
Sunday into Monday. A strong cold front is expected to blast south
across the region this AM, exiting into northern Colorado by early
afternoon. Significant low-level CAA will occur in its wake w/ 700
mb temperatures plunging to -6 to -8 deg C across all zones by 00z
this evening. As a result, daytime high temperatures are likely to
be met at some point before noon for most areas. Snow showers will
begin increasing in coverage by 21z w/ the arrival of larger scale
forcing ahead of a strong mid-level short wave tracking across the
northern and central Rockies. Trends in high-res model guidance in
the past several hours has suggested this short wave could lead to
enhanced low-level convergence along the Laramie Range. Latest GFS
and NAM forecast soundings for KLAR suggest rapid saturation after
00z along with strong UVVs within a deep (2-4k ft) dendritic layer
through the evening into the overnight. All high-res models (HRRR/
FV3/ARW/NAMNest) are in good agreement with 0.15 to 0.25 inch QPFs
over the I-80 Summit, bleeding into Laramie with northwesterly low
level upslope flow. Additionally, a secondary maxima also develops
over the North Snowy Range Foothills near Arlington. Confidence is
quite high w/ potential snowfall accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in
these areas. Given this is still a busy holiday travel weekend due
to Thanksgiving and we are on the heels of a certainly deceptively
warm day on Friday, have opted for a Winter Weather Advisory valid
from 5 PM this evening until 5 AM MST Sunday. Snow should end very
quickly by sunrise Sunday.

Our attention quickly shifts to the increased potential for strong
winds across a large portion of southeast Wyoming from Sunday late
morning through early Monday. A highly energetic mid & upper level
short wave will crash into the Pacific Northwest this evening with
100+ knot 500 mb flow likely to spread across northwest Washington
State by 12z Sunday. In advance of this wave, substantial pressure
falls will begin spreading across eastern Montana into the western
Dakotas, giving way to H7/H85 CAG-CPR gradients in the 60-70 meter
range between 15z Sunday and 12z Monday. This combined with strong
subsidence and steep low-level lapse rates should support a decent
high wind episode with 75 MPH gust potential at Arlington. This is
also well-supported by in-house probabilistic guidance, with probs
quickly spiking to 80 percent or higher by 15z Monday. Bordeaux is
likely to be a bit delayed behind Arlington as it will take a good
bit of time for the west-east MSLP gradient along the spine of the
Laramie Range to increase to sufficient levels. Nonetheless, still
expect the parameter space to be a slam dunk for high winds at BRX
and the Southern Laramie Range by 21-00z as the ARL to BRX surface
pressure gradient approaches 5 millibars & 700-800 hpa flow climbs
to 65 knots over the Bordeaux gap. Models continue to suggest very
strong downward omega over the entire Laramie Range after 00z Mon,
with an impressive +/- omega couplet extending into I-25 in Platte
and Converse counties between 03z and 06z. As this will likely end
up being accompanied by an intense mountain top inversion per area
x-sections, severe mountain waves are likely with wind gusts quite
likely to exceed 70-75 MPH at times at Coleman/Bordeaux, and maybe
even into Douglas as well. At this time, thinking these waves will
most likely break just west of Cheyenne, but it will be close. The
consensus for headlines was to go ahead with a High Wind Watch for
the wind corridors, as well as some of the adjacent zones with the
intense gradients in place along w/ likely mountain waves.

strong cold front pushes through southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska
panhandle.

2) Increased chances for gusty to high wind gusts through Wednesday
afternoon with a return to near-normal temperatures Thursday and
Friday.

DISCUSSION: The long term forecast period remains active beginning
with a strong cold front Monday. While the GFS deterministic is
holding to the progressive trough stalling over southeast Wyoming
through Tuesday night, not moving until Wednesday, the ECMWF
deterministic has a faster progressive trough ejecting northeastward
by Tuesday night. Due to the near 12 hour timing difference, the GFS
deterministic snow totals are higher than the ECMWF deterministic's.
Kept current forecast snow totals near the ECMWF and GFS ensemble
means for now, which is broadly 2 to 4 inches across elevations less
than 7,000 feet and 8 to 12 inches in the Snowy and Sierra Madre
Mountains. There is still time for the timing and amounts to change
in the coming days. In addition, there remains the possibility that
a snow band will stall somewhere in the forecast area, which would
result in some locations receiving significantly more than what is
currently forecast. It is hard to tell where that band could stall
as of now, but confidence is expected to increase in the coming
days.

Strong northwest flow aloft will keep temperatures below average
Wednesday. As the jet stream remains over the CWA Wednesday as well,
but brief high pressure and subsidence will allow for increased High
Wind potential. CAG to CPR pressure gradients have trended back
upwards, now looking to be in the 50s and 60s at 850 mb. Internal
guidance has the High Wind probability in wind-prone areas of
southeast Wyoming in the 40 to 60% range. Long range models are
showing west to southwest mid and low-level flow Wednesday afternoon
through Thursday with broad areas of subsidence primarily along and
west of Interstate 25.

The timing and location for the following trough varies between long
range models at the moment. There is the highest confidence in
temperatures being near-normal Thursday afternoon, then dropping
once again to well-below normal with lows in the single digits
possible going into the end of the work week. There is less
confidence in next chances for snowfall, impacts, timing, and
locations.

VFR conditions will continue through the afternoon with NW to N
winds (except KRWL which will be WSW) gusting to 25 to 30 knots,
Deteriorating flight conditions are expected this evening through
tonight. Increased cloud cover and snow shower activity will move
in from northwest to southeast. KRWL will see dropping CIGs and
VIS first by 00z, but there is a slight chance for this to occur a
few hours earlier. KLAR, KCYS, and KBFF should drop between 00z
and 03z, with KSNY by 05z. MVFR conditions are expected, with IFR
likely, and LIFR possible at those terminals. There is lower
confidence that CIGs/VIS will reach MVFR at KCDR and KAIA, but low
CIGS below 5kft are likely.

Winds will start to shift to more westerly early Sunday morning
and bring snow shower activity to an end. This should improve
flight conditions between 08 and 11z. However, a few models show
some low clouds and/or fog lingering in the vicinity of KLAR and
KCYS through the morning. Maintained MVFR conditions in the TAF to
account for this, but will need to re-evaluate in later updates.
