Snow amounts today...followed by a widespread strong wind event
are the forecast challenges today through Friday into Saturday.
Currently...Cold front currently along a line from Alliance to
Wheatland to Arlington bisects the CWA. Snow has picked up behind
the front with snow being reported at Rawlins and Saratoga. South
of the front...still a lot of dry air to overcome with 3AM
humidity at Cheyenne still 40 percent.
Guidance has the cold front near the Colorado/Wyoming
stateline by 12Z or so. Snow will be come widespread along and
west of the Laramie range this morning. For most areas east of
the Laramie Range...it may take some time for snow to develop. Did
not make many changes on snow start times from the previous
forecast. By shortly after noon time...snow expected to begin
here near Cheyenne...spreading out into the Panhandle by late
afternoon.
Getting advisory level snow amounts now in the north Laramie Range
into Converse County with this event. Decided to add these two
zones into the current Winter Weather Advisory. Day shift may want
to consider spreading the Advisory east now since many areas will
experience the snow beginning near sunset. Upper trough moves
into the east plains by 03Z this evening and eventually east after
09Z...bringing an end to the snow from west to east.
A lull in the weather Friday morning through the afternoon as the
trough shifts east. But then winds begin to increase as upper
ridge builds into the area. Craig to Casper 850/700mb height
gradients ramp up to the mid 50mtrs after 18Z and continue rising
to above 60mtrs by 00Z. Looks like Arlington could hit high winds
as early as 18Z Friday...probably more like 21Z. Decided to start
their High Wind Watch at noon Friday. Craig to Casper 850/700mb
height gradients really begin to ramp up after 00Z into the
evening hours. All wind prone zones should be hitting by mid
evening Friday as well as central and northern Carbon County. By
early Saturday morning...strong winds widespread...spreading out
into the eastern plains. High Wind Watches have been issued for
most southeast Wyoming forecast zones by that time.

Headed into Saturday will be a continuation of a fairly significant
high wind event across southeast WY. CAG-CPR height gradients will
climb around 90m at 700mb by early Saturday morning with flow aloft
exceeding 70 kt in spots and strong, widespread subsidence present.
NAEFS does suggest these 700mb winds are near the maximum
climatological value for early November. Strong winds aloft will
continue to spread eastward across towards the NE/WY border Saturday
afternoon and with daytime mixing, will lead to strong winds
reaching down towards the surface. While wind gusts should reach 75
mph across the wind-prone locations such as Arlington and Bordeaux,
could see widespread 55-65 mph wind gusts reach areas east of the
Laramie Range including Cheyenne, Wheatland, and Scottsbluff during
the day Saturday. NBM v4.1 pings most of the areas under the High
Wind Watch with greater than 50% chance of exceeding wind gusts of
48 kt (55 mph).
Gradients and winds will begin to ease up headed into Saturday
evening, however a frontal passage could lead to light snow showers
through Sunday morning, mainly across Carbon and Albany counties.
Accumulations should be light, while the Sierra Madre and Snowy
Ranges could see 2-4 inches. Temperatures look to briefly warm up
early next week with southwesterly flow resulting in WAA as 700mb
temps jump up 10C degrees. However, uncertainty on timing and
progression exists with the next deep trough digging into the Great
Basin region for the middle of next week.

Latest radar loop was showing numerous snow showers moving
through points between KLAR and KRWL this morning. Latest radar
loop was showing a heavy band of snow just west of the Laramie.
However, we are not confident that it will hold together as it
approaches KLAR due to strong downsloping winds. We did go ahead
and mention the potential for a light snow shower where the
VSBY/CIGS could drop to the MVFR category briefly between 18Z-21Z.
The other area we are watching is the Colorado Front Range. If we
see any heavy snow bands in that area during the next couple of
hours, they could lift northeast into the Nebraska Panhandle late
this afternoon or early this evening. Otherwise, light to moderate
snow will continue to spread across the majority of the TAF sites
through the early evening before tapering off overnight as the

Panhandle this morning. Behind the front...widespread accumulating
snow is expected to develop and spread east through the day. Fire
weather concerns will be minimal today through Friday. A
widespread high wind event taking shape Friday into Saturday
night. Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph for lower elevations with 80
mph gusts possible for the wind prone areas of southeast Wyoming.
With recent snowfall and cold temperatures...fire weather concerns
will be minimal through the weekend.
