KEY MESSAGES:
1) High Wind Watches in effect Thursday morning for possible high
winds ahead of the strong frontal passage. Wind gusts 50 to 60
mph possible in areas along and west of the Laramie Range.
2) Strong cold front moving through Thursday afternoon and evening
bringing much colder temperatures, as well as rain/snow chances to
the majority of southeast Wyoming and portions of the Nebraska
panhandle. Snow accumulations T to 3 inches possible at lower
elevations in southeast Wyoming. A Winter Weather Advisory in
effect for the Sierra Madre Range for 5 to 7 inches likely from
early Friday morning through Saturday morning. Winter Storm
Watches in effect for 5 to 11 inches possible in the Snowy Range
and 4 to 9 inches possible in the South Laramie Range.
Discussion: There is not much to say for the forecast today, it
will be hot, dry, and breezy across southeast Wyoming and the
Nebraska panhandle. Enjoy it while you can though because coming
Thursday is a drastic pattern change beginning with a strong
mountain wave signal, as well as a strong pressure gradient that
will likely result in wind gusts 50 to 60 mph in wind prone areas
and northern portions of Carbon and Albany counties if it holds.
Following these high winds is a drastic temperature drop and
widespread precipitation. The precipitation is going to be the
hardest part to nail down on this event due to it being a late
season snowfall event. Models right now are showing the cold front
quickly pushing to near the Wyoming/Colorado border, then stalling
through Friday. Where areas on the warm side of the front will
receive rain, and the cold side of the front will receive snow.
The trickiest part is that boundary seems to currently be almost
directly over Cheyenne, Wyoming. If the boundary stays south of
the WY/CO border, then southeast Wyoming will be in the cold side
of the front and we will likely receive the high end of the
currently forecasted amounts. However, if that boundary wavers
north of the WY/CO border, putting areas like Interstate 80 on the
warm side of the front, then those areas will receive more rain
and less snowfall. The Nebraska panhandle will primarily receive
rain through this event with areas near the Wyoming/Nebraska
border receiving a little snow, but it will likely not accumulate.
Due to this being such a late snowfall event, areas where the
snowfall will likely accumulated will be on raised and grassy
surfaces. Potential for travel impacts as well, due to falling and
melting snow. All impacts will be highly variable on the timing
and placement of the cold frontal passage.
.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Tuesday)

Weather Highlights:
1) Snow chances remain across Wyoming with a wintry mix possible
across the Nebraska Panhandle on Saturday.
2) Unseasonably cold overnight lows Saturday night may create some
widespread frost across much of central and eastern Wyoming.
3) Gradually warming up next week with precipitation chances on
Monday.
Overview: The most impactful weather day in the long term will be
Saturday as a slow moving, potent low pressure system will bring
accumulating snowfall to the Sierra Madre and Snowy Mountain ranges
and across most central and eastern Wyoming valleys. The main trough
axis by Saturday will be pushing through western Nebraska with the
bulk of the higher QPF superimposed with the upper level jet.
Precipitation chances will decrease west to east and transition from
all snow to a rain/snow mix across eastern Wyoming. By the time the
center of the trough moves overhead, most of the precipitation will
be ending just as the coldest air beings to advect into the region.
This may pose a frost threat for some locations Saturday night into
Sunday morning. Temperatures will slowly begin to rebound next week.
Discussion: Models are in good agreement with the slow trajectory of
the upper level trough passing through the region. Leading up to the
beginning of the long term, a few winter weather highlights have
been issued beginning Thursday night and continuing into Saturday
morning. Widespread precipitation chances will be ongoing Saturday
morning in the from all snow for much of Wyoming and a wintry mix
across the Nebraska Panhandle. The transition zone between frozen
and mix will be the main forecast challenge, especially across the
I25 corridor. Models show frontal zone and draped right along the I-
25 corridor. Snow totals were adjusted to account for the potential
of a sooner transition to more of a mix. Even with the slightest
downward trend in snow total accumulations. Laramie county and
southern Platte county could see snow totals in the 2-3" range. With
the departure of the leading edge of the trough axis precipitation
chances come to end and a surge of -10C 700mb temperatures advect
into north and eastern Wyoming. This cold air intrusion will allow
minimum temperatures to drop into the upper 20s across eastern
Wyoming with temperatures just below freezing across the Nebraska
Panhandle. Some localized frost concerns may materialize in some
locations Sunday morning.
After a cold morning, increasing heights slowly begin to build from
the west with moderating temperatures both at the surface and at the
700mb level. This overall trend in slow moderating temperatures
will continue into next week as temperatures rebound to seasonal
normals by Monday. The next chance for precipitation looks to be
Monday morning as a quick moving shortwave trough passes through
but, models are beginning to hint at a more potent storm system and
widespread precipitation chances impacting the area on Tuesday.

VFR and limited aviation impacts over the next 24 hours with high
passing clouds. Only caveat would be the gusty surface winds this
afternoon and even higher surface winds Thursday at all sites.
This afternoon, sustained winds of 15 knots are likely with gusts
of 25 to 30 knots at times. Winds will remain elevated through the
overnight and increase further after 15Z Thursday. Winds will
increase to at least 35 to 45 knots at times for KRWL/KLAR/KCYS
and about 10 knots lower at all other TAF sites ahead of a strong
cold front that will move through Thursday evening. Low-lvl
turbulence will be possible Thursday. Greater aviation impacts
will occur late Thursday night and through all of Friday into
early Saturday with snow, lower ceilings, and reduced visibility
for at least Wyoming sites.
