The main concern with this portion of the forecast is the
potential for high winds Thursday.
Latest visible satellite loop was showing some mountain wave
clouds moving through portions of Wyoming with a frontal boundary
sitting between Wheatland and Douglas. Convergence has not been
too significant along this boundary yet, but we are starting to
see the mountain wave clouds slowly pushing east. This is
revealing some cumulus developing across northern Converse county.
Not expecting much to develop during the next couple of hours.
However, some isolated convection may still get going towards 6pm
or so mainly in the northern Laramie Range. Moisture still looks
be rather limited at this time, but still cannot rule out some
elevated convection due to MUCAPE nearing 1000j/kg. Mid level
shear looks to be rather strong which may tend to tear the storms
apart, but one cannot rule a rogue storm that may become strong
or severe towards sunset across Converse or Niobrara county. Most
of this convection should lift north into South Dakota and eastern
Wyoming, but we may see a some convection through the night as the
cold air aloft approaches the area and helps trigger scattered convection
across the northern portions of the forecast area through much of
the night.
Latest water vapor loop was showing a very potent upper level trof
moving through the four corners region. This upper level trof is
progged to eventually close off as it lifts northeast into
central Wyoming by midday Thursday. The closed low will bring some
significant changes as it approaches our forecast area beginning
Thursday morning mainly across areas west of the I-25 corridor.
The biggest changes will occur along and behind a frontal boundary
that will affect areas mostly in southeast Wyoming Thursday
morning and push into the Nebraska panhandle Thursday afternoon.
As this front passes through, it will mostly likely cause a 5 to
10 degree temperature drop and a significant rise in the wind
speeds. As a result, we have decided to upgrade the high wind
watch to a high wind warning, due to strong winds developing aloft
along with good subsidence and mixing. These winds should begin to
subside after sunset. Overall temperatures will be much cooler
tomorrow compared to today with afternoon highs only in the 50s
and 60s in Wyoming and mainly 70s in the Nebraska panhandle.

Long range forecast remains on track for this weekend with the upper
level flow transitioning towards quasi-zonal flow as an upper level
low stalls out across the Canadian border. Main concerns for this
weekend is the potentials for some gusty to stronger winds west of
the Laramie Range as some shortwave disturbances propagate within
the flow. NBM v4.1 Probability of Exceeding 41kts has begun picking
up on these features, with a high likelihood of stronger winds along
the Laramie Range and further eastward through 06z Sunday. As
result, went ahead and started bumping up the winds with wind gust
maxes around 40 MPH. Fairly decent warm-up expected through next
week with low-70s this weekend and possibly in the low to mid-80s by
early next week as an upper level ridge builds across the domain.
Next chance for precipitation is progged for Tuesday as the ridge
shifts eastward into the Plains and some shortwave energy within the
flow possibly kicking up some scattered thunderstorms for areas east
of the Laramie Range. Thermodynamic profiles do not look amazing at
this time with CAPE values generally less than 200 J/km and not much
sheer to speak, pointing to lightening as the main concern for
southeastern Wyoming. During the same time period, the thermodynamic
profiles are telling a different story for the Nebraska Panhandle.
Forecast soundings are pushing a more impactful system with better
MUCAPE values sitting just shy of 2000 J/kg, 700-500mb lapse rate
around 8.2C/km, effective bulk wind difference at 44kts, and the
SHIP parameter just at 1. All in all, much of these parameters will
depend heavily on if the moisture advection into the region from the
Gulf holds true and will need to be monitored throughout the week to
determine any specific impacts for western Nebraska.

CAMS picking up some convective initiation across the Dakotas
later this evening and into the nighttime hours. Current HiRes
models have been backing off from convective reaching as far south

any AMDs required. Otherwise, main concern over the next 24 hours
exist with gusty to strong winds, LLWS, and potentials for dropped
ceilings in the early morning hours.
