Latest radar loop and obs were showing the bulk of the snow had
moved south of a Douglas to Chadron line. Therefore, we have
decided to cancel the Winter Storm Warnings/Advisories for
Converse, Niobrara, northern Sioux and Dawes counties and replaced
with a Wind Chill Advisory. Elswhere, the snow will continue to
gradually taper off during the remainder of the night as the jet
streak continues to push east.
The next concern is the potential for a couple more inches of
snowfall to return to the southern half of the forecast area
tomorrow in response to the broad scale isentropic lift and really
good moisture transport. This may require us to extend the Winter
Storm Warnings or lean toward Winter Weather Advisories. Will let
the midnight shift decide on how to handle that.

***Winter Storm With Moderate to Heavy Snowfall Will Continue
This Evening***
Only a few minor changes to this afternoon's forecast package with
the current forecast, snow totals, and headlines on track this
afternoon. Impressive heavy band of snow with snowfall rates of 2
inches per hour set up just south of Douglas to Banner and
Kimball County this morning. This has resulted in snowfall totals
already around 10 inches from Wheatland, south of Torrington, and
over towards Kimball. This band is slightly further south this
afternoon, but it's mainly impacting the same general area across
far southwest Platte County into Laramie County and Kimball
County. Increased overall snowfall totals in this general area now
that we know exactly where the band is located. Snowfall totals
will taper off as you head north, and should taper off as you head
south. However, current models are showing pretty big totals near
Cheyenne and towards the Colorado border now. Increase snowfall
totals along I-80 from near Laramie towards Cheyenne and Pine
Bluffs. The evening shift will have to monitor this area closely
this evening.
Further to the west, as expected, snowfall has been in bursts with
slightly warmer temperatures due to the location of the arctic
front. Near-blizzard conditions are occurring near Arlington and
Elk Mountain. Thought about upgrading the Winter Storm Warning to
a Blizzard Warning for this area, but winds are starting to
decrease as the front makes its way southwest, and visibilities
have occasional peaked above one quarter mile at times. Looking at
area webcams in Carbon County, conditions aren't too bad, so will
continue with the Winter Weather Advisory for snow and blowing
snow for those areas. All other WSW and Winter Advisories look
good at this time, but will need to monitor the Alliance and Agate
area for locally higher accumulations and possible warnings. The
only other change was to issue a Wind Chill Advisory for Dawes
county since wind chill temps have been around -20 for most of the
day. Once the current winter weather headlines drop for the
snowfall across the Nebraska panhandle, will likely add the rest
of the western NE counties into an advisory as well.
Forecast for tonight through Thursday remains on track. Forecast
low temperatures will be tricky tonight with cloud cover
preventing some radiational cooling. Low tonight should be well
below zero east of I-25 and even a few degrees below zero along
I-25 and towards the Laramie Range. Expect the really intense
snowbands to diminish in intensity and push south into Colorado
between 3 and 6 PM local time. Visibility should improve some but
light to occasional moderate snow should continue across southeast
Wyoming, mainly the I-80 corridor with improving conditions
further north and east. The arctic front is then expected to stall
near the higher mountain ranges of Colorado and southern Wyoming
around or shortly after midnight. All models indicate WAA aloft
(overrunning) along and ahead of the front as it lift back to the
northeast late tonight and Thursday morning. Expect another band
of snow to develop in this area of low to midlevel overrunning
with light to moderate snowfall rates possible. The main issue
with this is models tend to under-forecast QPF amounts with WAA,
but still expect 1 to 3 inches of snow with this band as it lifts
northeast through Thursday afternoon.
The only other concern at this time is Thursday with strong winds
returning to portions of Carbon and Albany county behind the
arctic front as it lifts northeast. Expect wind gusts over 60 MPH
by early Thursday morning through noon Thursday. With the Winter
Storm Warnings and Winter Advisories already addressing this
concern through Thursday afternoon, will keep these out until
they are no longer needed if the snow and blowing snow end quicker
than anticipated.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)

The main focus in the medium-range forecast is the potential for
prolonged high winds, especially in the CWA's wind prone areas. ARL
will be the first to see high winds, likely starting Thursday
afternoon due to strong height gradients. Prolonged strong height
gradients will keep high winds at ARL through Thursday night and
into Friday night. BRX will likely begin to see high winds
starting Thursday night. Strong 700 MB flow combined with strong
downward omegas over the Laramie Range provide a good setup for a
high wind event at BRX through potentially Saturday afternoon. The
southern Laramie Range, including the Interstate-80 summit, and
adjacent foothills will likely also see some high wind action
between Thursday night and Saturday night. The first high wind
chance will be Thursday night. A 700 MB, 75 kt jet positions itself
over the southern part of the Laramie Range Thursday night. Strong
subsidence will accompany this 700 MB flow leading to high winds.
Central Laramie County, including Cheyenne, may even see some of
these high winds. The next high wind event for this area looks to be
late Friday night into the day Saturday, with a similar setup.
Friday, temperatures rebound to above average after a cold couple
of days. On Saturday, temperatures cool down a bit to roughly
average as a cold front approaches out of the northwest.
Temperatures Saturday night will drop below average and make for a
cold day on Sunday.
Saturday's cold front also brings a chance for some snow. However,
snow seems concentrated over the Snowy and Sierra Madre Ranges, so
the lower elevations should remain mostly dry. The mountains look
like they could pick up a couple inches of snow during this time.
Looking at the long term, it looks pretty quiet for now. An upper-
level ridge begins to work its way over the Rockies. This looks to
keep things dry at least through Wednesday, and potentially even
longer! Our Wyoming winds even look to take a break Sunday through
Tuesday! Don't want to jinx it or get ahead of ourselves though as
it's still to early to know for sure!
