Forecast challenges deal with fire weather issues in the Nebraska
Panhandle today and Monday...followed by high winds Monday
afternoon in the short term. Pretty busy weather upcoming.
Currently...Cold front currently analyzed from the Montana/North
Dakota state line...southwest to near Lusk...to Rawlins this
morning. Ahead of this front...2AM temperatures in the mid 40s.
West of the front...temperatures in the low to mid 30s.
This front will eventually clear the CWA later this morning with
gusty northwest winds behind the front. Temperatures 8-10 degrees
cooler today over Saturday. Still...the southern Panhandle will
see temperatures close to 60 for highs today. With dry air behind
the front and those gusty northwest winds...thought it would be
good to issue a Red Flag Warning for the southern Panhandle this
afternoon.
Shortwave ridge builds into the area pretty quickly this evening
with winds shifting back to the west and southwest. GFS showing
winds picking up through the day Monday. 700mb winds up above
50kts across Carbon County by 21Z Monday. Craig to Casper
850/700mb height gradients up near 50mtrs at that time and
continue increasing into Tuesday. 700mb gradients break 60mtrs by
00Z Tuesday.
Another dry and windy day expected in the Panhandle Monday.
Northern Panhandle likely to see the low humidity and gusty
southwest winds combining to produce critical fire weather
conditions. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect for FWZ 311 and 312
Monday.
So we have some high wind watches going based on early start times
across Carbon County Monday afternoon. Strong winds spread
eastward Monday night into Tuesday morning. Will likely need to
expand watches to cover Laramie...Cheyenne and Wheatland in later
updates. For now...we concentrated on Carbon County and the wind
prone areas with our current watches.
We do get some light precip Tuesday as the system moves through
the area. Nothing too heavy though with the Snowy and Sierra
Madre Ranges seeing 3-5 inches of snow. Lower elevations likely
to see a half inch or less. But with the strong winds...looks like
travel is going to be hazardous Monday night into
Tuesday...especially near Arlington.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Saturday)

The main focus of the long term forecast remains the prolonged high
wind event expected to continue through Wednesday.
Tuesday night will be a transition to the second phase of this wind
event, which is currently expected to be a bora type event for the
high plains. On Tuesday, we will have a very strong upper level jet
stream positioned from the NE Pacific to northeast Colorado,
crossing over Washington, Oregon, southern Idaho, and southern
Wyoming. North of the jet core, a tight 500-mb low will push south
and east, clearing the Rockies on Tuesday. The 200-mb flow fields
show major diffluence over the Great Plains downstream of the jet
core which will support the development of a surface cyclone over
the Dakotas. The digging upper level low combined with tightening
low level pressure gradient will help turn the flow more NW to NNW
on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The strongest winds are
expected to start to weaken west of the Laramie range as this
occurs. Very strong flow in the low to mid levels is expected to
develop over SE Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle early Wednesday
morning, spreading the high wind threat further east. The GFS shows
700-mb winds exceeding 70-kts over portions of our area at 12z
Wednesday. In fact, the NAEFS mean 700-mb winds are exceeding the
99th percentile of the CFSR climatology from 12-18z Wednesday, and
approaching the maximum for the current time of year.
There is some uncertainty on the timing of the strongest 700-mb flow
and specifically how this will align with daytime mixing. On the
synoptic scale, the low pressure system will become more vertically
stacked and occlude on Wednesday, initiating a gradual weakening
process as it slowly drifts eastward. After this occurs, the
pressure gradient looks to start weakening sometime on Wednesday.
The GFS currently shows the strongest low-level winds occurring
early Wednesday morning, mostly before sunrise, but still does have
widespread 50-kt 700-mb winds during the afternoon mixing period.
Precipitation will likely be limited during this period, but we
will have to watch for continuing light snow showers in the
mountains, as well as wrap-around rain/snow showers impacting our
northern counties on Tuesday night and Wednesday.
For headlines, the current forecast package is only focusing on the
earliest onset portion of this wind event, and thus the current High
Wind Watch covers areas most at risk for strong winds Monday night.
The main threat areas will likely expand on Tuesday during the day,
and then shift eastward on Wednesday. Thus, while not included in
the current package, later updates will likely have to consider
expanding the watch into the high plains of SE Wyoming and the NE
panhandle for the late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon
time period.
We will likely remain under the influence of this storm system
through Thursday with temperatures remaining chilly for this time of
year and breezy to windy northwest winds continuing. 700-mb
temperatures will bottom out on Tuesday afternoon through Thursday
morning around -10 to -13C, leading to well below average
temperatures. Thursday should be slightly warmer than Wednesday, but
still cool. High amplitude ridging will start to build in across the
west on Friday. Significant spread exists in the GEFS distribution
of 700-mb temperatures for Friday, depending on how quickly the
ridge builds back in, but the 50th percentile climbs above 0C by
Friday evening, supporting confidence in a much warmer day. There is
good agreement that we will be near the ridge axis on Saturday, with
much warmer temperatures before forecast uncertainty increases on
Sunday in advance of the next shortwave. Both the GEFS and European
ensembles show increasing west coast troughing by Sunday, but there
remains significant spread regarding how this will play out at the
surface.

VFR conditions are expected for all terminals through the forecast
period. Gusty winds can be expected for the NE Panhandle terminals
up to 35-40 kts this afternoon, before tapering to less than 10
kts by 2Z this evening. Wind gusts will be 15-25 kts for the
Wyoming terminals this afternoon, and dissipate to less than 10
kts by approximately 2Z. Winds will quickly back to the southwest
by this evening through the overnight hours for terminals.

Dry cold front moving through southeast Wyoming this morning will
reach the Nebraska Panhandle near sunrise. Cooler today behind the
front...but expect some strong northwest winds behind the front.
Red Flag Warning in effect today for FWZ 313 with these strong
winds and low humidity. Winds shift back to the southwest tonight
into Monday morning and will remain elevated. Warmer temperatures
will create near critical to critical fire weather conditions. A
Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the northern Nebraska
Panhandle...FWZs 311 and 312 for gusty winds and low humidity
Monday. Widespread strong winds expected Monday afternoon across
Carbon County...spreading east Monday evening. Another cold front
