.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday)
Issued at 229 PM MST Thu Mar 10 2022

The main concern with this forecast package is the high
wind/blowing snow potential in the wind prone areas Friday
through Saturday night and another night of very cold wind chills
tonight.

Latest observations were showing fairly steady winds 30 to 40 mph taking
place at Bordeaux this afternoon. This is causing some blowing
and drifting snow across this area. Otherwise, temperatures have
been slowly climbing this afternoon with temperatures mostly in
the teens. Latest water vapor loop was showing the main upper
level trof gradually shifting east into the northern plains with
a stout upper level ridge building over the Pacific northwest.
This ridge will slowly build over the forecast area during the
next couple of days. This will allow for warmer temperatures to
return.

Before the warmup ensues, we will be faced with more serious wind
chills again tonight. Looking at once again 20 to 30 below wind
chills mainly over southeast Wyoming. Therefore, we are issuing
another Wind Chill Advisory. After tonight, we should see
temperatures finally climb steadily over the next couple of days
with above freezing on Saturday. However, along with the warmer
temperatures comes the wind. At this time, it appears like the
wind prone areas will be the main focus with Arlington getting
cranked up tomorrow afternoon as the surface ridge builds east and
pressure falls starting building across the northern Plains and
height gradients begin to tighten. We did go ahead and issue a
warning for the Arlington area starting at 18z tomorrow, but it
may be delayed a bit closer to the evening timeframe when the
downward vertical motion starts to get more engaged.

The other area of concern is the wind prone areas along the I-80
summit, foothills and Bordeaux region tomorrow night. Most
concerned about the Summit and foothills at this point, due to
some potential mountain wave activity. Bordeaux on the other hand
may be a bit more delayed due to the influence of the lee side
trof. As a result, we went ahead and issued a High Wind Watch for
this region starting tomorrow night and continuing through
Saturday evening.

The blowing snow will also be a big concern over the wind prone
areas. Later shifts will need to evaluate the ground blizzard
potential across these areas, especially tomorrow afternoon into
Saturday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Thursday)

A fairly progressive patterns looks to develop in the long term
period. The main challenges will be the timing, strength, and
position of the transient shortwaves and ridges that we expect to
lead to volatile temperatures.

On Sunday, a broad ridge will be positioned over the Rockies with a
vigorous 500-mb low pushing into the Pacific northwest. As the ridge
pushes eastward, we will put some distance between us and the upper
level jet on the eastern flank of the ridge, reducing synoptic scale
descent. Thus we expect the winds to start coming down Sunday, but
elevated winds are still likely in the wind prone corridors.
Temperatures are expected to be near normal for this time of year.
The PACNW low approaches our area Sunday night, and expect this
shortwave to cause a drop in temperatures and a quick hit of
precipitation. There is fairly good agreement on track and timing
currently. Expecting light snow mainly confined to the higher
terrain, but rain/snow showers could spread out especially into
Converse county. QPF should be light, generally low end advisory
criteria or less, but will need to be watched. The GEFS generally
slow a slightly more southerly track to the upper level low, which
would be slightly wetter for our CWA, but still a fairly minor
event.

Ridging tries to briefly build back in on Tuesday. Global models are
in fairly strong agreement for 700-mb temperatures back above 0C
once again. The GEFS shows 700-mb wind speeds climbing again on
Tuesday as a subtle surface trough slides down the eastern side of
the Rockies and increases the cross barrier pressure gradient. Could
have to watch this time period for high wind potential again.
Ensembles start to favor a transition back to troughing by the end
of the forecast period. There are still significant model
disparities regarding this period. The European ensembles are still
hinting at the possibility of a closed low developing over New
Mexico on Thursday with 700-mb fetch from the Gulf of Mexico. About
one third of the European ensembles show this scenario which would
mean substantial moisture to the eastern slopes of the Rockies
somewhere. Currently, the low center per the European is far enough
south that this would be in southern Colorado. The GEFS and Canadian
ensembles do not favor this solution, and thus leaning against it in
our forecast currently. However, any closed low potential in the
middle of March warrants very close attention. The NAEFS, along with
about 20% of the European ensembles, are clustered around a solution
of a more progressive, open wave. That doesn't imply no impacts
though, so this period will continue to be monitored.

MVFR to VFR conditions likely through the forecast period for all
terminals. Conditions have continued to improve throughout the day
as the upper level trough continues pushing eastward and west to
northwesterly flow begins to take hold across the region. Main
uncertainty in the next 24 hours exists with any fog potentials
from KLAR eastward into the Nebraska Panhandle, with clear
overhead skies, cold temperatures at the surface from the recent
snowfall, and potentials for some light variable winds. Confidence
is fairly low at this time with mostly downsloping winds evident.
Will need to monitor later model runs to determine if light and
variable winds are possible, and thus increasing fog potentials.
