Strong gusty winds from last night have continued to diminish
early this morning. Therefore, have cancelled the High Wind

Cautiously allowed the High Wind Warnings to expire on time this
morning. Only one sensor near Elk Mountain (County Road 402) has
been reporting occasional gusts over 60 mph, but the rest of the
sites have gradually lowered below 52 mph as of 900 AM. Will
follow it up with an SPS due to the lingering gusts around 50 to
55 mph. Otherwise, slightly warmer today with mostly sunny skies.
Attention will then switch to the upcoming wind event for this
weekend, which looks stronger and a little more widespread across
southeast Wyoming. Updates have been sent.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Sunday)
Issued at 300 AM MST Fri Feb 18 2022

Strong winds remain the main forecast challenge through the short
term. Still looking good for a fairly widespread strong wind event
across southeast Wyoming Saturday and Sunday.

Currently...1028mb surface high over northwestern Colorado this
morning with an area of low pressure over eastern Montana and
western North Dakota have combined to give us some pretty high
Craig to Casper 850/700mb height gradients. Current wind warnings
have all verified late last evening and winds are in a lull right
now. Seeing upper 40s to low 50 mph gusts at this time with Craig
to Casper gradients around 70/51mtrs. Will let the high wind
warnings run their course. Across the southern Canadian
Provinces...an arctic boundary is in place. To the north of this
boundary...temperatures are well below zero to low single digits.

Thinking we can let the current wind warnings end on time at
Bordeaux and south Laramie Range at 12Z as gradients ease after
that time. An exception being Arlington. Did go ahead and extend
the Arlington warning a couple more hours this morning until 9AM
to account for the higher gradients that hold on until 15Z. If
winds don't materialize after sunrise...day shift can cancel early
if needed.

Gradients begin to increase once again this evening...up near
60mtrs by 06Z Saturday and then rapidly increase up to 83/73mtrs
by early afternoon Saturday. This is in response to the southward
moving arctic boundary and the stationary high pressure over
northwestern Colorado. 700/750/800mb winds all increase over
50kts Saturday morning and continue to increase up to 70kts by
Saturday evening. Issued a High Wind watch for wind prone areas
and adjacent lower elevations for Saturday and Sunday.

Perhaps our strongest winds occur late saturday night into early
Sunday morning as Craig to Casper gradients up at 90/69mtrs. GFS
700mb winds 70-75kts at 06Z Sunday. Day shift will take another
look for additional zones to add in the wind headlines and
whether to upgrade existing watches later today.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday)

Main story in the long term period will be upper level troughing
over the western CONUS that will result in the next chance for
precipitation along with an extended cold stretch with potentially
record lows behind a strong cold frontal passage early next week.

Looking at timing of the cold frontal passage early Monday morning
through midday as a leading shortwave ejects out from the large
upper level trough digging into the Great Basin. Majority of the
precipitation over the area will fall in association with the
frontal passage and continuing through Monday night before drier air
moves in overhead behind the shortwave. Looking like moist upslope
flow could continue a little bit longer over the Sierra Madres and
Snowy Ranges increasing snowfall totals in these areas. Overall, not
looking too impressive for higher snowfall totals outside of the
higher terrain similar to this last system. Lower elevation QPFs
continue to range in the 0.15-0.30" range which should equate to 2-
5" of snow accumulation.

GEFS 700mb temperature spread has tightened up considerable over the
past 24 hours for Tuesday and Wednesday. After 700mb temps hover
around 0C for much of the weekend, they are expected to plummet
behind the cold front near -25C by Tuesday morning with a few
members reaching -30C in spots. If this holds, these values will
reach the climatological minimum for 700mb temps in mid to late
February across the area! Looking like record low temperatures on
Tuesday and Wednesday will be challenged. Current record low for
Tuesday (Feb 22nd) and Wednesday (Feb 23rd) in Cheyenne are -13F
with forecast lows at -11F and -14F, respectively. Additionally,
record lowest high temperatures will be at risk of being broken
Tuesday with forecasts in the the low single digits. Decided to go
lower than NBM guidance incorporating lower NBM percentiles, but
even the median NBM values continue to trend down on Tuesday
afternoon temperatures with the latest guidance updates.

The larger scale upper level trough looks to finally push through
Wednesday night and Thursday. Current guidance still shows the low
moving across AZ/NM which should be a little too far south to see
another round of accumulating snow. However, will need to continue
to monitor latest forecast trends in the coming days. Temperatures
will gradually climb through the end of the week with gradual 500mb
height rises. Overall, temperatures should remain below-normal until
we reach next weekend.

VFR conditions prevail across all TAF terminals in southeast
Wyoming and the Nebraska panhandle, except KRWL. However, the MVFR
cigs at KRWL should clear up shortly. Gusty winds this afternoon
with primarily westerly winds gusting 25 to 35 knots. Winds remain
elevated in a few areas overnight, but most drop off after sunset,
only to come back up again Saturday afternoon. There is a chance
for MVFR cigs at KCDR and KAIA after 4Z tonight as a cold front
drapes over portions of eastern Wyoming and just touching the
border between South Dakota and Nebraska.

Minimal fire weather concerns with recent snowfall. But winds are
looking to pick up Saturday and Sunday with warming temperatures.
Likely to see widespread strong winds across southeast Wyoming

Sunday looking to stay in the low 20 percent range with these
strong winds. Area still on track to see an arctic front move
south into the area...bringing light accumulating snow and bitter
cold temperatures starting Monday next week.

Travelers on Interstate 80 between Mile Markers 240 and 290, and
Mile Markers 325 and 340, should expect occasionally strong wind
gusts of 50 to 60 mph this morning. These stronger gusts will
create some drifting and blowing snow on area roadways, but these
conditions should be localized. Winds will likely stay elevated
