Current KCYS radar loop shows the initial band of snow increasing
in intensity and pushing east across the eastern High Plains this
morning. Cold front is clearly seen on Visible Satellite moving
southward across north-central Colorado with low stratus clouds
developing just after FROPA. This front has stalled in our
southeast Wyoming mountains this morning, but will likely drift
south through the day with another round of snowfall expected this
afternoon and into this evening. The next round of snow will
likely be more widespread and steady. Tweaked snow accumulations
and POP and adjusted to current model trends with steady snowfall
currently in Dawes and Box Butte counties. Will keep current
Winter Weather headlines as is, but may need to extent them into
all of Laramie County, Platte County and portions of the northern
Nebraska panhandle. However, due to some daytime heating on
surface pavement, travel impacts are expected to be low...at
best.

Active weather ahead next few days. Challenges deal with snow
accumulations through Thursday morning. Followed by strong winds
and blowing snow potential Thursday into Friday.
Currently...Cold front lays over northern Kansas this
morning...extending west northwest to a surface low near Rawlins.
Starting to see snow being reported in area METARS at Rawlins and
Douglas...as well as Casper. So far...nothing being reported to
the south and east of those cities...though we are coming down on
ceilings from the northeast upslope windflow.
Looking at the latest mesoscale guidance...the HRRR is showing
fairly widespread snow developing after 12Z across southeast
Wyoming as secondary vort max moves into the area. Synoptic scale
guidance all in good agreement with 6 hour qpf placement and
amounts. Does look like the GFS is most bullish on QPF with close
to a half inch of QPF over southern Albany County through 00Z
today. ECMWF much less with around .2 inches in the same location.
Pretty much followed the lower end guidance as well as WPC
QPF...which keeps us in Advisory level snow totals for the areas
identified in the Winter Weather Advisories.
Office high wind guidance continues to show strong winds
developing Thursday afternoon with snow ending from north to south
Thursday morning. Winds shift westward again Thursday afternoon
with Craig to Casper 850/700mb height gradients increasing to
79/54mtrs by 00Z Friday. Decided to issue High Wind Watches for
the wind prone areas...starting first at Arlington...then Bordeaux
a few hours later and eventually the south Laramie Range Thursday
evening. Depending on how much snow we get today and
tonight...could have real issues with blowing snow across much of
the I-80 and I-25 Corridors in southeast Wyoming.
.LONG TERM...(Friday night through Tuesday)

Northwest flow will continue Friday night into Saturday with
elevated flow around 700mb in response to CAG-CPR gradients climbing
over 60m by 12z Saturday. This will lead to yet another windy day on
Saturday, especially for southeast Wyoming wind-prone locations.
This northwest flow pattern with anomalously high 500mb heights will
result in above average temperatures continuing throughout the
weekend. Afternoon highs east of the Laramie Range will mostly be in
the 50s Saturday and Sunday with relatively low NBM MaxT standard
deviations building confidence in these above-normal temperatures.
Unfortunately, this trend will not last long as a large upper level
trough will setup over the western CONUS next week. 500mb heights
look to drop at least 2 sigma below the 30-year average for late
February Monday through Thursday ushering colder air and the next
chance for precipitation. Timing, strength, and location of this low
still look uncertain based on the different model systems and GEFS
members. However, seems to be two phases of energy that passes
through with the initial cold front Monday night into Tuesday and
then again with the trough passage Wednesday. With this trough's
prolonged presence over the region, morning lows Tuesday through
Thursday look to be in the single digits if not below zero.

Overall, poor flight conditions are expected across area terminals
today. Most sites are MVFR to IFR conditions with low ceilings and
visibilities due to snow showers. Heaviest snowfall will persist
through the afternoon before beginning to clear up early this
evening from north to south. Ceilings will begin to rise to around
5 kft in the Nebraska panhandle after 05Z, however SE WY
terminals could see MVFR to IFR ceilings until 11 or 12Z. If the
winds are light enough overnight and in the early morning hours,
there is a chance for localized fog, but the chances are currently
low since the winds will likely be too strong. Looking ahead,
gusty winds could result in BLSN Thursday with localized
reductions to visibility.

Minimal fire weather concerns the next several days as a cold
front moves through the area. This front will bring widespread
light snow with several inches of snow accumulation possible for
the mountains of southeast Wyoming and 1-2 inches elsewhere.
Strong winds return to the wind prone areas Thursday afternoon
with High Wind Watches in effect. Dry Thursday through Sunday with
elevated winds. Afternoon humidity stays well above critical
levels however. Prolonged widespread snow still on track for next
week.
