Most of the short term forecast package remains unchanged as very
cold air moves into our cwa late this evening. Temperatures range
from the negative lower single digits in our northern zones (CDR)
to near 10 above along the I-80 corridor. Cloud cover will help
limit overnight lows from getting much colder, but areas that may
have partial clearing with the recent snow could very easily drop
rapidly overnight into the negative single digits or colder. The
only forecast change to mention is that the frontogenesis band has
remained to our south earlier this evening across Northern CO.
With surface temperatures at CYS as of 530Z hovering around 10
degrees F, or -13C, we are having the dendritic growth zone (DGZ)
from the surface to the lower levels. Thus far, small dendrites
have been observed the first couple hours of our anticipated
heavier snowfall rate timeline. Have gone with a slightly reduced
snowfall forecast as most areas along the I-80 corridor appear to
have 1-2" or less of new snowfall. Still expect to see a broad
swath of 1-3 inches along the I-80 corridor overnight, with the
higher snow totals remaining to our south and east as the surface
low ejects out of the Intermountain West the remainder of this
evening and overnight. Bitter temperatures and wind chills remain
forecast across the area, so those that venture outdoors this
evening into Saturday morning should wear extra layers.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday)

Multiple weather hazards to discuss for this afternoon's forecast package.
Models seem to be in better agreement with snow timing and potential
snow accumulations. However, the northern extent of the steady
snowfall is still questionable.

*Winter Weather & Snowfall Tonight*

Current KCYS radar loop this afternoon shows the snowfall picking
up in intensity in Colorado and slowing developing further north
into Wyoming. Expect this trend to continue with snow developing
shortly in Cheyenne, Laramie, and vicinity. Winter Weather Advisories
and Wind Chill headlines look on track tonight and into early
Saturday morning. The only change made to this portion of the
forecast was to include southwest Platte County/central Laramie
Range in the Winter Weather Advisory. Typically, northeast to easterly
upslope winds between Wheatland and Cheyenne tend to do well and
help with snowfall accumulations in this area where models typically
under perform. Otherwise, all other areas look good with 2 to 4
inches of snow in the Advisory areas. It is still unclear how far
north the steady snowfall will extend...with some models suggesting
the North Platte River valley and other suggesting closer to the
Douglas and Lusk areas across east central Wyoming. Will have to
monitor the northern Nebraska panhandle since upslope northeast
winds tend to be favorable near the Pine Ridge. Snow reports from
earlier today near Chadron have been in the 2 to 6 inch range
from that snowband this morning, so will have to keep that in mind
for tonight since models have struggled with that area recently.
The best dynamic forcing appears to be later this evening through
09z Saturday (200 am local) across southern Wyoming and western
Nebraska as some frontogenesis, WAA aloft, and jet dynamics
interact and play a role in some decent dendritic growth and
higher snow ratios. After that, we slowly lose forcing across the
area with light upslope flow and CAA becoming the dominate
forcing mechanism through sunrise Saturday. Most of the snowfall
should be finished by noon Saturday with gradual clearing skies.

*Very Cold Temperatures Tonight Through Saturday Night*

Current observations show temperatures already in the low single
digits near Chadron and near Alliance. This is a little concerning
since forecast low temperatures tonight are about 5 degrees below
zero, which isn't too far away from the observed temperatures. Any
clearing skies will result in low temperatures rapidly dropping
into the teens below zero. Decided to go with the low end of
model consensus since any decent amount of cloud cover will keep
temperatures from falling too much. Further south, much higher
confidence that the cloud cover will keep temperatures near zero
for lows tonight, either a few degrees below zero or a few degrees
above zero. Either way, it will be very cold with wind chills
near -20 tonight even further south near the I-80 corridor.
Decided to keep wind chill wording in the Winter Weather Advisory
instead of issuing another product. Saturday's high temperatures
will struggle to reach the low to mid teens pretty much everywhere
across southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska.

Low temperatures for Saturday night will be tricky with a low
confidence forecast. Clear skies will be up against increasing
westerly winds and downslope adiabatic warming near the mountains.
Winds may even become breezy across several western Nebraska
panhandle locations due to a strong low level pressure gradient.
Kept low temperatures Sunday morning similar to Saturday morning,
with lows around zero. However, any location that observes lower
wind speeds and decouples from the flow just off the surface will
see temperatures plummet into the teens below zero or even lower
for a time before temps increase with the onset of stronger winds.

*Strong winds and threat of blowing snow in the Wind Prone Areas
 Late Saturday Through Sunday*

Although steady snowfall will end around noon Saturday, all models
show increasing low level pressure gradients and a high potential
of another high wind event for the wind prone areas due to gap
winds. Gradients aloft aren't terrible impressive, and 700mb
subsidence is slow to increase...but is present as early as 06z
Saturday night. Issued a High Wind Watch for the Wind Prone areas
starting 00z (5 PM) Saturday evening based on in-house guidance
and local modeling. The other issue is there should be a decent
amount of blowable snow in these areas. If observed gusts are
even 50 to 65 MPH, blowing snow may become the primary
hazard...especially on the I-80 Summit and Elk Mountain/Arlington
areas. Decided to add additional wording to the High Wind Watch
for blowing snow, low visibility, and drifting snow. May need a
strongly worded Winter Weather Advisory for blowing snow, but will
wait to see how much snow falls in these areas first. Another
note, some of these zones may see these strong winds well into
early next week. Had to specific an end time for the Watch, so
decided on late Sunday evening for now.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 122 PM MST Fri Dec 31 2021

No major changes to the long term, as much of the forecast remains on
track. The upper level trough that was giving much of the weekend weather
is expected to continue traveling eastward into the Midwest, with a
ridge of high pressure taking its place across the western to central
CONUS late Sunday night. Winds are expected to briefly subside,
with the higher gusts around 30 or so knots near the wind prone areas
and under 15 knots east of the Laramie Range. By Monday afternoon,
a strong pacific jet begins pushing its way inland, paving the
way for another prolonged wind event through Wednesday, with an arctic
cold frontal boundary digging its way southward across the CWA early
Wednesday morning. NBM v4.1 Probability of Exceeding 48kts has begun
picking up on these features, with a high likelihood of strong winds
along the Central Laramie Range and eastward into Bordeaux through
06z Tuesday and again through 06z Wednesday, in addition to the
CAG-CPR gradients jumping from 60 to as high at 90 meters during
these time frames. Next chance for precipitation is progged for
early Wednesday morning with the arrival of the frontal boundary.
At this time, best estimates is that this will be a fast moving
system, pushing precipitation from north to south across the CWA,
effectively ending any snow across the high plains pretty quickly.
With the general track this frontal boundary is taking, the Sierra
Madres and Snowy Range will be most affected with the boundary
getting caught up along those mountain ranges and thus prolonging
the event west of the Laramie Range. Temperatures are expected to
plummet once again as the arctic cold front pushes its way
southward, bringing us once again into the single digits with wind
chill temperatures anywhere from -10 to -20F across the domain
Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The remainder of the week
looks generally warmer and dry with a upper level ridge building
across the western to central CONUS once again, bringing more wind
and a good 15 degree temperatures increase by Friday. Forecast
confidence remains moderate through the period as the models have
remained fairly consistent over the past few runs. However, will
need to monitor ensemble guidance for any diverges that occur
behind the Midweek system.

Diminished fire weather concerns over the next few days thanks to
much colder temperatures and the possibility for snowfall. An
arctic cold front will stall over the High Plains on Friday, with
cold temperatures and higher humidities to the northeast of the
boundary. In between this boundary, positioned roughly from just
north of Douglas southeast towards just south of Alliance, and the
Laramie Range, warmer temperatures with minimum humidities around
35-40% are expected along with breezy westerly winds gusting to
around 20 MPH. The front will spill westward to the mountains on
Friday afternoon and open the door to light snowfall. Highest
confidence in accumulating snowfall remains in the counties along
the Colorado border, with diminishing totals further north. Strong
winds with minimum humidities around 30% will return for Sunday
east of the Laramie range.

impacts are possible with 1 to 2 inches of snow possible, although
most locations further north should see accumulations below one
inch.

Very cold temperatures are expected Saturday morning, with wind
chills as low as minus 20 to minus 25 degrees. Strong winds are
possible late Saturday and on Sunday.

Snowy Range and the Sierra Madre Range. Wind chill temperatures
of -5 to -15 are expected.

West to southwest winds will increase late Saturday afternoon into
Saturday evening. A High Wind Watch is in effect starting at 500
PM MST. In addition to the potential for strong winds, blowing
snow is a concern with very low visibilities and drifting snow
through Sunday.
