The incoming winter storm that has been heavily advertised is
progged to bring a one-two punch for much of SE Wyoming and the
Nebraska Panhandle. Moderate to heavy snowfall with area wide snow
accumulations will be accompanied by some very strong winds. This

.(Snow): Although confidence continues to grow for a major winter weather
event Monday into Wednesday, the main challenge continues to be fine-
tuning snowfall in terms of location and amount.
Previous deterministic models (GFS/ECMWF) were in good agreement
regarding surface low location and track throughout this storm's
life. Newest 00Z deterministic models have deviated from each other.
The GFS remains mostly the same, taking the storm track more through
the eastern half of Nebraska. As a result, snow totals across most
of the plains of Wyoming did not change much compared to previous
runs. The ECMWF has taken a jog slightly westward as it continues to
wobble through central Nebraska Monday night into Tuesday. This has
resulted in increased snowfall amounts, most notably in the western
half of the CWA, including Rawlins, Saratoga, Laramie, and the
mountains. Did not add any Winter Storm Watches to these plains
locations at this time as confidence was not high. Would like to see
these higher snow totals in another iteration of the forecast
package before Watches are issued. The more westward track of the
ECMWF also upped snowfall accumulations in the Nebraska panhandle
and even in Cheyenne. This is also reflected by ECMWF ensemble
guidance. Did trend snowfall totals upward and expanded Winter Storm
Watches to include most of the Nebraska panhandle as both
deterministic models have been showing a steady uptick in
accumulations, leading to more confidence in these areas.
Snowfall accumulations across the Pine Ridge area continues to be
consistent. North to northwest winds and good wrap-around moisture
will create an ideal upslope flow environment for the Pine Ridge and
areas to the north. Converse, Niobrara, Sioux, and Dawes County
could see between 6 and 12 inches of snow. Localized areas of the
Pine Ridge could see over a foot of snow. Forecast challenges for
this area will include potential shadowing from the Black Hills,
which could reduce snow totals. However, greater shadowing effects
will likely occur north of the CWA and may not pose any impacts to
the CWA at all.
A nuance that has continued to show up from model run to model run
is a secondary band of higher snow totals in the southern Nebraska
panhandle. There could be several factors at play here that are
causing this. The first is that deterministic models show an area of
positive frontogenetical forcing. This could lead to a deformation
zone that could sustain a prolonged period of heavier snow. Both the
NAM and GFS also show some negative EPV values aloft within the
southern panhandle and far southeast Wyoming which again could
support narrow bands of intense snowfall and high snowfall rates.
Lastly, this area could see influence from the TROWAL of this storm
as it moves northeast out of Colorado and into Nebraska. Depending
on the location of the TROWAL, really any part of the panhandle
could see a prolonged period of heavy snow. Once this storm enters
the short term period, Hi-Res models may be able to better resolve
where exactly this band of heavy snow sets up. However, at this
time, it looks like the southern and central panhandle could see
snowfall totals of 5 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts
possible if a more intense band sets up. Cannot rule out these
higher totals also expanding farther west into the plains of
Wyoming, including Laramie and Goshen Counties.
.(High Winds): Concern for prolonged, high winds is increasing for
areas east of the Laramie Range and the Nebraska Panhandle. These
high winds will be associated with the ongoing winter storm
progged to impact the region beginning Monday night.
Models are aligning for developing a deep area of low pressure
over central Nebraska that will rapidly tighten the pressure
gradient as rapidly moving air begins to fill the void.
Significant cyclogenesis is expected as the storm emerges across
central Nebraska as the storm begins to become vertically stacked.
This process will develop a stinger jet on the western periphery
of the area of low pressure and will move across SE Wyoming and
the Nebraska Panhandle.
NBM 4.1 wind percentiles have responded accordingly and now shows
all areas along and east of a Douglas to Laramie line having a
greater than 70-90% chance of seeing wind gusts greater than 41
knots (45 mph), and much of the I-25 corridor and the Nebraska
Panhandle having a 60-85% chance of seeing wind gusts greater than
48 knots (55 mph) by late Tuesday night. Tracking where the
models have these strong winds aloft the area of greatest concern
looks to be areas along and east of the I-25 corridor. As
mentioned above the I-25 corridor has high probabilities of
seeing 55 mph gusts, but the NBM 4.1 has began to show that this
area has a ~40% chance of seeing wind gusts exceeding 65 mph. In-
house models have also trended higher in both chance of high winds
and estimated maximum wind gusts expected. With these winds
occurring during snowfall, blowing, drifting and ground blizzard
hazards come into play, especially across the Nebraska Panhandle
where the greatest confidence for moderate snowfall is highest.
The tricky part will to the forecast remains tied to this track of
this storm system. As the high wind threat becomes more
significant with increasing confidence of the occurrence of high
winds, the challenge will be whether or not to add zones to high
wind watches as the current forecast stands now. The concern is
for this storm system to shift and in doing so, the heavy snow
axis will become synonymous with these high winds to the point
where winter weather highlights will be more prudent in covering
the overall heavy snow/blowing snow threat over just having a high
wind highlight. In any case, high winds seem probable and blowing
snow and ground blizzard conditions seem likely and adjustments
are likely needed as the track of this storm becomes more clear
over the next 24 hours.

Weather Highlights:
1) Snow ending as storm moves off to the east.
2) Elevated winds continue across much of SE Wyoming and parts of
the Panhandle which may create instances of blowing snow for some
locations.
3) Remaining cold in the wake of the storm, with the cold
temperatures continuing into next weekend.
Overview: This section of the long term will be focusing on the
post storm impacts as blowing snow concerns will continue across
the region and much colder temperatures are expected heading into
next weekend.
Discussion: All indications point the last bit of snow associated
with the winter storm will be ending from west to east across the
region throughout the day on Thursday. Widespread fresh snow pack
will be buffeted by 35 to 40 mph wind gusts and blowing snow and
ground blizzard conditions may continue across portions of SE
Wyoming and the southern Nebraska Panhandle. The severity of the
blowing snow impact will hinder on how much snow accumulated in
the areas that will see these wind gusts. The areas of most
concern will be across portions of I-80 from Arlington to
Cheyenne to Sidney.
As the large storm system continues to push off to the east, a
shifting flow aloft to the north will allow for persistent CAA
into the region and temperatures are expected to turn cold with
even cold wind chill values expected. It is possible current
forecast high temperatures may be too warm given a widespread
snowpack will be blanketed across the region. Current high
temperature forecast for Friday are in the 20s for areas east of
the Laramie range and the Nebraska Panhandle with teens across
Carbon and Albany counties. Overnight lows drop below zero in some
locations with widespread single digit lows expected.

VFR conditions possible for the majority of terminals through the
forecast period. With the approach of the winter storm into the
CWA, conditions will be fairly milder in comparison for this TAF
issuance. Main concerns over the next 18 hours exist with gusty to
stronger winds around 25 to 35 knots possible for terminals in
southeastern Wyoming. Conditions are expected to deteriorate
quickly with the approach of the low pressure system, with
strong winds and moderate to heavy snowfall as snow begins to push
from west to east. Should begin to see snow within vicinity of the
most western terminals by the morning hours and snow likely for
the next TAF issuance. HiRes models are indicating some reduced
ceilings for KAIA with the approach of this system beginning after
15z tomorrow. Went ahead and pushed ceilings into IFR categories
at 17z.
