The main concern with this portion of the forecast is where the
snowfall banding will be setting up this evening and overnight.
Latest radar loop was showing the frontal boundary just about 10
miles away from Cheyenne and should pass through the area during
the next hour or so. Radar loop and web cams were showing
snowfall becoming more widespread along and north of a Chugwater
to Torrington line and west of I-25. Latest satellite derived
winds were showing strong jet energy across northern Wyoming with
southeast Wyoming in the right entrance region of the upper level
jet streak. The HRRR/NAMNest trends were also showing some
700-600mb frontogenetical forcing developing over the Pine Ridge
region late this afternoon into this evening. Latest radar loop
from Rapid City was showing some evidence of this banding south
of the Black Hills where a convergence zone appears to be
forming in response to the northerly flow. We did bump up snow
amounts along the Pine Ridge tonight to reflect this potential.
The rest of the area, the models are showing good quasi-
geostrophic forcing overnight which will favor light to moderate
snowfall across the region. There is still considerable
uncertainty on where the next frontogenetical band will form.
With the exception of the HRRR, several of the HiRes models are
showing the next frontogenetical band forming after midnight
north of the Cheyenne Ridge. We tended to lean towards the
previous forecast in keeping the highest totals between Wheatland
and Horse Creek. With that in mind we went ahead and upgraded
forecast zones 106, 116 and 117 to a Winter Storm Warning since it
covers I-25 and I-80.
The models are showing things moving out a little quicker than
previous runs. Therefore, we have trended that direction with most
of the snow clearing out by Tuesday afternoon. High pressure will
then settle into areas east of the I-25 on Tuesday night which
will allow for strong radiational cooling due to the fresh
snowpack. Could be flirting with some Wind Chill Advisories in
some locations especially in the higher terrain with the
possibility of blowing snow developing west of I-25 due to strong
jet energy building into the area under a weak upper level ridge.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

No major changes to the long term forecast, as upper level ridging
continues to move eastward from the western seaboard and large scale
subsidence tracks into the CWA. Warming trends are expected under
this pattern throughout the day on Wednesday, with 700mb
temperatures increasing from -19C to -5C by 18z. Daytime highs will
rebound into the high-20s, and even low-30s, for most areas east of
I-25 on Wednesday and climbing towards seasonal averages by
Thursday. Despite the much more mild conditions expected from the
warming trends, winds are likely to increase from mid to late week,
with a series of minor disturbances propagating within the flow. In-
house model guidance has consistently increased probabilities
towards high winds Thursday through Friday and the NBM v4.1
Probability of Exceeding 41 knots echoing this guidance across the
the wind prone areas along the I-25 and I-80 corridors, and along
the Laramie Range, with seeing high likelihoods of reaching speeds
greater than 41 knots across those zones. As a result, went ahead
and started trending those wind speeds upwards.
Next chance for precipitation is progged for early Friday, mainly
across the higher terrain, with long range models picking up on a
shortwave trough pushing from the Pacific Northwest eastward
across the High Plains. Models are trying to nudge precipitation
upward mainly west of I-25 from this system. However, confidence
remains low at this time with the shortwave appearing a bit too
far to the north to provide any measurable precipitation outside
of the mountain zones.

OVERVIEW: Snowfall is creating IFR to LIFR conditions at most
terminals at this point in the evening. Poor flight conditions are
anticipated through the night, with gradual improvements expected
Tuesday morning. VFR conditions should return by early afternoon,
but we will also see some increasing winds.
DETAILS: The band of heaviest snow has established itself
now, stretching from just east of Cheyenne through Scottsbluff
and towards Alliance. This is expected to gradually drift eastward
over the next few hours and bring VIS as low as 1/4 mile as it
passes over terminals. Otherwise, expect VIS in the 1 to 2 1/2 SM
range in light snow for much of the night. KCDR has cleared out
of the heaviest snow, but scattered showers behind the main round
could still fluctuate flight conditions for the next several
hours. KLAR is probably the trickiest forecast, where subtle
shifts in wind direction are likely to lead to variability between
IFR and VFR. Winds turning easterly are likely to temporarily
lift CIGs and increase VIS, but this will be prone to rapid
change. Confidence in precise timing of snow intensity
fluctuations is low, but overall behavior is expected to be in the
heaviest snow from now until around 09-12z, after which time we
can expect some improvement.
