A developing area of low pressure over the Gulf Coast will strengthen as it tracks northward along the eastern seaboard Sunday and Sunday night. An Alberta Clipper is likely to track north of Pennsylvania the middle of next week. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... Passage of shallow arctic cold front and arrival of dry air has brought clearing skies to much of central Pa this evening. Low level moisture originating from Lk Ontario will likely result lingering scattered to broken stratocu across the northern tier counties overnight, while mainly clear skies prevail elsewhere. Low level cold advection will result in temperatures falling steadily overnight. Comparing model 925mb late tonight to those currently over upstate NY supports min temps ranging from near zero over the highest terrain north of KIPT, to the mid teens in the valleys near the Mason Dixon Line. North winds should only slightly diminish overnight due to the continued pressure gradient between a high over Ontario and an intense low east of New England. The combination of cold and wind still supports wind chills early Saturday morning near -15F, especially over the highest terrain such as much of Sullivan County. High pressure and associated dry arctic air mass nosing south from Ontario will ensure fair and cold weather Saturday. Warm advection aloft ahead of a shortwave diving across the Grt Lks will spread a fair amount of high clouds over the area, limiting diurnal heating. Expect high temps in the teens over the northern half of the forecast area and 20-25F south. Favorable conditions for radiational cooling are anticipated Saturday night, as surface high builds into the area while shortwave and associated high clouds exit east. Will therefore continue to undercut NBM min temp guidance, especially over the northeast quadrant of the forecast area, where calm winds are expected. Expect lows of zero to 5 below over the northern mountains and single digits over the south. && .SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... *Significant winter storm potential with heavy snow and minor ice accumulation possible Sunday afternoon through Monday afternoon A closed mid-level low pivoting across the Gulf Coast early Sunday morning will begin to lift northeast and take on a negative tilt across the southern Appalachians Sunday afternoon and then race northeast to be over NJ by 12Z Monday. This will be accompanied by an increasingly coupled jet structure downstream of the pivoting trough, with intense ascent through diffluence aiding in the development and then strengthening of a low pressure system moving north to a nearly stacked position by the end of D3. The guidance has come into much better agreement with the placement of this low lifting roughly along the I-95 corridor. As this low initially develops, mid-level confluence over the Mid-Atlantic will help reinforce a wedge of high pressure down the east side of the Appalachians in a typical Cold Air Damming (CAD) setup. As the low strengthens, moisture will surge northwestward behind robust isentropic lift and likely produce a period of moderate to heavy snow (WAA thump) early Sunday night (00-06Z Mon). Mixed thermal profiles and possible dry slot are in play into early Monday morning to the southeast of I-99/80 which could transition snow to ice over the southeast part of the CWA. While there are still some details to resolve, there is a strong enough model signal to issue a well-collaborated winter storm watch for most of the CWA from 18Z Sunday to 18Z Monday. The multi-model/blended QPF and SLRs indicate potential for 6" or more of snow with a minor ice glaze also possible across the southeast 1/3 of the area. Deformation snow appears to linger over the northern part of CPA through Monday morning. The expected snowfall btwn 12-18Z Monday was not included in the storm total with this cycle given that it is beyond the set time window. Expect cold/gusty NW flow to take over Monday night with deformation snow transition to lake effect/upslope snow showers into Tuesday morning. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Dwindling lake-enhanced, orographic snow showers are expected over the Alleghenies Tuesday, as upper trough lifts out and surface ridge builds in from the Grt Lks. Both the ECENS and GEFS track an Alberta Clipper across southern Ontario next Wednesday, keeping the bulk of its precipitation north of the border. Southwest flow and associated warm advection preceding the trailing cold front should result in a marked warmup with highs Wednesday several degrees above average. Passage of the trailing cold front is likely to be accompanied by a round of snow or rain showers, then a cold northwest flow behind the front should generate lake effect snow showers Wed PM through Thu PM across the Alleghenies. Progged inversion heights look fairly low, indicating light snow accums. The bulk of medium range guidance supports dry and cold weather late in the week, as surface high builds in from the Grt Lks. && .AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... MVFR cigs at KBFD/KJST should trend VFR toward daybreak. VFR prevailing elsewhere through the 15/06Z TAF cycle and continuing into Sunday. Wind gusts up to 20kt from 310-010 degrees should decrease by this evening. Expect snow and associated IFR to spread south to north late Sunday evening into early Sunday night. Snow will likely mix with rain and sleet across the eastern airspace later Sunday night before transitioning back to wrap around snow Monday morning. High confidence in sub-VFR btwn 00-18Z Monday.
