Lingering low ceilings will gradually improve through the
afternoon, although VCT looks to keep MVFR layers for much of the
day along with some -SHRA. Widespread MVFR and eventually IFR will
filter back into the region this evening with additional -SHRA at
times ahead of an arctic front. This front looks to arrive a bit
earlier at all sites tonight - COT and VCT from 01Z-03Z, and CRP
around 07Z, ahead of gusty N winds and scattered showers. IFR
ceilings should slowly improve to MVFR Thursday morning as drier
air arrives. However, a window for light wintry precip could open
as early as Thu afternoon from COT-LRD, before spreading east
through tomorrow night.

AVIATION...
LIFR/IFR conditions this morning, due to a mix of low CIGs and
VSBYs, will improve to MVFR levels through the morning hours. VFR
conditions are possible across portions of S TX this afternoon,
but will be short lived as scattered showers develop across the
area, keeping mainly MVFR conditions. Conditions drop back to
LIFR/IFR by early evening with showers become numerous ahead of a
strong cold front. The cold front is expected to move through the
COT TAF site between 00Z- 03Z, LRD between 01Z-04Z, VCT between
03Z-06Z then ALI and CRP between 08Z-11Z. Strong north winds will
develop behind the front. LIFR/IFR CIGs and rain with MVFR VSBYs
will persist behind the cold front early Thursday morning.

SHORT TERM (Today through Thursday)...
Unseasonably warm temperatures continue today despite mostly cloudy
skies and increasing rain chances. However, this will be the last
warm day for awhile as a strong cold front will move through S TX
late tonight.
Rain chances increase today as PWATs increase to around 1.4 inches.
A deep long wave trough evident on satellite, stretches from Canada
to the Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California. The long wave is
progged to move east toward TX and eject an embedded short wave
across the region today. It will also increase the diffluence aloft.
The upper support combined with low level moisture convergence ahead
of the cold front will contribute to scattered showers today
becoming numerous tonight with the cold front. A few thunderstorms
are also possible due to very weak instability along the coastal
areas and Victoria Crossroads. In addition, models prog increasing
shear/helicity. Therefore, there is a slight chance of
thunderstorms, mainly across the northeast CWA where better dynamics
are expected.
The showers become more stratiform behind the cold front Thursday
morning. A brief lull is progged by late morning into early
afternoon. Then rain chances increase Thursday afternoon as the
850mb front and a second upper short wave move through the region.
There is a slight chance of sleet and/or freezing rain moving
into the far northern Brush Country and northern Victoria
crossroads by late Thursday afternoon as much colder air advects
across S TX. Lows tonight and highs Thursday will both be in the
40s with little diurnal change.
Winds behind the cold front will be strong to very strong and a
Wind Advisory may be needed for areas along the coast where gusts
up to 40 mph will be possible. Gale force winds are expected
across the bays and coastal waters beginning early Thursday
morning. Wind chills by Thursday afternoon will be in the 30s.
LONG TERM (Thursday Night through Tuesday)...
Arctic air mass will continue to push into the region Thursday
night with freezing temperatures moving into the northern
counties early in the evening and to the southern Coastal Bend
after midnight. A short wave trough will be moving through the
forecast area during the evening hours with the right entrance
region of the upper jet in place as well as weak warm air advection
at 70H. This may be enough lift to generate light precipitation
mainly during the evening hours. But there are also negative factors
such as low level cold air advection and gradual drying below 85H.
Hi-res models, NAM, and medium range models show very limited QPF
across the coastal plains Thursday night. There should be some very
light freezing rain moving across the northern counties early in the
evening that could transition to light sleet. Light freezing rain
may also move across the coastal region overnight with a change over
to sleet by daybreak Friday. But with very low precipitation amounts
expected, no headlines are warranted at this time. Closer to the
event, we will probably need a Winter Weather Advisory.
The other aspect of the front will be the cold temperatures and low
wind chills as moderate northerly winds occur Thursday night into
Friday morning. Wind chill values are expected to fall into the
teens late Thursday night into Friday morning. Lows will fall into
the upper 20s to around 30. Will hold off issuing Freeze Watch for
one more cycle. Cloud cover will remain over most of south Texas on
Friday with breaks in the clouds northwest late. Highs will only
make it back to around 40 degrees Friday.
The upper trough/low will move east into the lower Mississippi River
valley Saturday morning. Clouds will decrease over inland areas
Friday night. With high pressure in place, another morning of
freezing temperatures are expected Friday night/Saturday morning.
Slightly warmer conditions will occur Saturday but another night
of freezing temps will be possible for inland areas Saturday night.
Warming trend will continue early next week. A short wave trough
moving out of the Rockies into the southern plains could lead to
a slight chance of showers Monday night into Tuesday.
MARINE...
A weak to moderate onshore flow can be expected today through
tonight. A strong cold front will move across the region early
Thursday morning with strong to very strong north winds gusting to
gale force developing in its wake. Isolated to scattered showers
are expected today, becoming numerous tonight ahead of the strong
cold front. A few thunderstorms will be possible. Numerous showers
will continue through Thursday behind the cold front. Strong to
very strong north winds with gusts to gale will continue over the
coastal waters Thursday night into Friday. The Gale Warning will
continue until 00Z Saturday for the coastal waters. Areas of light
rain will linger over the Gulf waters Thursday night with a
possibility of rain mixing to freezing rain or sleet early Friday
morning over the bays and possibly into the near shore waters.
Moderate to strong north winds/SCA conditions will occur Friday
night over the Gulf waters. Chances for rain will diminish for the
weekend with a weak to moderate offshore flow expected.
