Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A stationary front will remain along the southern shore of Lake
Erie before lifting north away from the area tonight. Low
pressure moves northeast into the Great Lakes region by Friday,
rapidly deepening as it does so. A very strong arctic cold front
extending from this low will move east across the area late
Thursday night into early Friday morning. The low pressure
system moves north of the region Friday and Saturday, extending
a trough of low pressure across the Great Lakes region Friday
night through Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
No significant changes with this forecast update.

Previous Discussion...
The calm before the storm! Weak upper level ridging and surface
high pressure pushing off to the east today should prepare the
stage for massive change to come in the next few days. That
change is coming in the form of an upper level low pressure
system diving southeast out of Alaska. This feature should
deepen quite rapidly as it moves into the Upper Plains States by
Thursday morning and western Great Lakes by Thursday evening.
Surface low pressure is already taking shape from Idaho to
Colorado and this system is expected to dive into the Oklahoma
Panhandle by tonight. The low will quickly become a Panhandle
Hook and track northeast to the western Great Lakes by Thursday
afternoon. A secondary surface low in response to upper level
trough becoming negatively tilted will then develop over the
Central Mississippi Valley and move northeast to northwest Ohio
by Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the entire double barreled low
should rapidly deepen with time and eventually become one system
beyond this forecast period.

In the mean time, fair weather should result from the influence of
the upper level ridge and the retreating surface high pressure today
and tonight across the area.  Low pressure will lift north along the
East Coast tonight and begin to spread some moisture west of the
Appalachian Mountains.  It is expected to begin to feed the
developing system over the Oklahoma Panhandle.  This moisture will
be responsible for some precipitation across the area late Thursday
morning into Thursday afternoon in the form of rain.

In advance of the Panhandle storm system, forecast area should start
to experience some warm air advection across the area in a gradually
increasing southeasterly flow Thursday. Slightly warmer temperatures
are expected today as the high pressure shifts east of the area with
further warming into the 40s for Thursday in the warm air advection
flow.  We may start to see some influence of the 850 mb southerly
jet nosing into the area from the southwest by late in the day
Thursday. Some increase in the winds over western Pennsylvania will
take place near the lakeshore Thursday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As we are within 48-60 hours of the onset of the potential winter
storm across the region, have gone ahead and put up the Winter Storm
Watch for strong winds, extreme cold, snow, and blowing snow. Will
let the watch product and associated products, including our
briefing, weather story, and social media posts speak to some of the
details and potential of each hazard. However, will note here that
the decision on the watch type and area was on the basis of impact
and simplicity within the watch phase. As will be discussed more
below, there are still significant issues with the snowfall forecast
across the region. Snowfall amounts in some portions of the forecast
area may not hit traditional winter storm criteria amounts or cause
enough impacts on their own with blowing snow and reduced visibility
to warrant an eventual upgrade to a snow-based headline and perhaps
a combination of a wind and wind chill headline will be issued
instead. Rather than try to make a specific set of hazards this
morning, opted for the widespread watch to continue to direct the
messaging that has been in place for the winter storm - Significant
winds and extreme cold will overtake the region and are the main
hazards for this event and may impact those that just stay inside
during the storm, whereas the snow will happen but will be a hazard
just for those traveling, which will of course be many people at the
end of this week.

The general pattern of the event remains largely the same as the
last several days. A low pressure system will develop over the
southern plains on Thursday morning and advance northeast toward the
area. Meanwhile, a roughly 1060 mb Arctic high will push southeast
across the central CONUS and filter in some extreme cold air into
the region and allow for this southern low pressure system to be a
significant winter storm across the region. With this initial phase
of the event, the event has picked up just slightly in speed and
drifted slightly further east. This means that there could be a
deepening low pressure system somewhere in the western forecast area
around 06z Friday. This would also mean that the initial front is a
bit faster in bringing the plunging temperatures and initial burst
of snow and half the area may see this before daybreak on Friday.
The timing of this feature keeps wobbling slightly, but this initial
push will be significant with a solid burst of 1-2 inches of snow
with the front and the immediate drop of temperatures. This could be
the biggest snow portion of the event for most and the flash freeze
could have more impact on travel than blowing snow in some areas. As
the event continues, the low will advance northeast and continue to
deepen considerably as it moves in to Canada. Trends in this phase
from Friday night into Saturday is that the low is a bit quicker to
pull away, now reaching western Quebec by 12z Saturday. The impact
of this is where does the wrap-around moisture and TROWAL set up on
Friday evening and how far south can snow return after a reprieve in
snow on Friday afternoon. Trends in snow are lifting north with the
snow quicker to exit and in turn, more energy needed to bring back
snow to the area. There is a 50/50 chance that areas along and south
of US 30 in Ohio could be entirely dry after the snow with the front
on Friday. Even with the change with snow, one thing still remains
very consistent and that is the 70 kt 850 mb jet that will move over
Lake Erie on Friday night. This consistent signal looms large for
our area as a good portion of these winds will mix down and 50 kt
wind gusts across the area are possible with stronger over the lake.
This will be the most concerning period for wind related damage
across the region. Any snow that fell or is occurring on Friday
night will blow around and cause travel issues. As the low then
continues away from the area, the focus will then be on lake
effect/enhanced snow. Given how dynamic the system is and the strong
boundary layer winds, it is not a great window for efficient lake
effect in Ohio and PA, regardless of fetch. So yes, these areas will
have more snow but we will not be piling up large dendrites with the
intense winds across the area. The cold forecast remains on track
with a window of 48 hours of single digit temperatures looking
likely for much of the area. With the current wind forecast, wind
chill values of -15 to -30F are most possible at this point for that
duration. This long term cold will pose issues with exposure for
people outside and potentially infrastructure.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
A residual trough will set up across the area on Sunday as the main
low swirls near James Bay on Sunday. Continued cold and west to
southwest fetch across the region will allow for some light lake
effect/enhanced snow to continue across NE OH/NW PA on Sunday. Cold
will still be across the area and some form of a cold/winter
headline should be across the area to start on Sunday morning.
Whatever is left from a strong Arctic high will advance southeast on
Sunday and help bump the trough out of the region. A brief window
where the two features interface on Sunday could allow for some snow
showers across the area, but trends will be dry for Monday as this
surface high ends the snow threat. High pressure will slide east and
allow for southerly return flow across the region on Monday and
Tuesday and temperatures will increase and be less frigid than this
weekend.

.AVIATION /18Z Wednesday THROUGH Monday/...
MVFR ceilings linger across some northern TAF sites over the
next hour or two before they dissipate. Otherwise, mainly VFR
skies are being reported over the rest of the forecast area.
Lower ceilings and precipitation begins to overspread the area
Thursday morning into the early afternoon. There is a slight
chance precipitation may initially for an hour or two fall as a
wintry mix of freezing rain and snow before transitioning to
all rain.

Light winds out of the east become southeast tonight,
strengthening to 9-12 knots during the daytime on Thursday.
Southeast winds may be stronger due to downsloping at KERI where
winds up to 15 knots with gusts to 25 knots are possible by late
Thursday morning.

Outlook...Non-VFR with rain Thursday, changing over to snow
Friday and Friday night. Lake effect snow may develop Friday
night through Sunday. Very strong westerly winds with frequent
gusts exceeding 40 knots are expected Friday through Saturday.

.MARINE...
The lake will remain under the influence of a stalled out front and
light flow will persist across the lake today with dry conditions. A
warm front will cross the lake on tonight into Thursday, allowing
for offshore flow to return to the basin. Strong flow will develop
in the warm sector on Thursday and offshore winds to 20 knots are
possible, perhaps higher over eastern Lake Erie with some
downsloping off nearby land. A major low pressure system will
develop over the southern plains on Thursday morning and move
northeast toward Lake Erie, deepening significantly. Offshore,
southeast flow will increase further on Thursday night to 20 to 25
knots. The low will pass just west of the lake on Friday morning and
this system will pass a very strong cold front across the basin.
Very strong southwest winds will overtake the lake along with
plunging temperatures and air temperatures over the lake will crash
from the 40s to the teens by Friday night. With the strong winds
expected with the cold temperatures, freezing spray is concern and a
Heavy Freezing Spray Watch has been issued and if there is a chance
for a rapid lake freeze up, especially over the western basin, a
marine weather statement may be issued closer to the occurrence.
Winds will increase to near storm force on Lake Erie, given the
southwest fetch along the long axis of the lake, and will maintain
the Storm Watch, but slightly adjusted the start time for the
western zones. This long axis flow will be problematic for low water
hazards for safe navigation on the western end of Lake Erie and
water levels may be significantly below the critical mark and a Low
Water Advisory will be issued once warnings are issued. The low will
depart with time on Saturday into Sunday but strong southwest flow
will continue through Sunday as a trough sets up across the lake. In
short, have a Storm Watch and Heavy Freezing Spray Watch out and
short term headlines like a Low Water Advisory will wait until
marine headlines are upgraded, but staying off the lake may be the
best option.
