What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter storm warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 1, 4:53 AM EST, 6 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Cleveland OH
453 AM EST Tue Feb 1 2022

.SYNOPSIS...
Cold front approaches tonight and slowly works through the CWA
Wednesday and Wednesday night marking the beginning of a
significant winter storm for the area. Low pressure along the
front rides northeastward, passing southeast of our CWA
Thursday/Thursday night. System exits early Friday followed by
high pressure through Sunday.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Ridging aloft to give way to southwesterly flow with the
amplification of the trough digging into southern California. This
gives us the well advertised warm up of sorts, which for our area
means temperatures back above freezing for the first time since the
19th. The trough over the southwestern US will be in the process of
ejecting eastward through the four corners region of the Southwest
for the near term period while Arctic high pressure dives
southeastward through the prairie provinces of Canada and into the
northern plains. As has been mentioned, this Arctic air pushing into
the Great Lakes while cyclogenesis is occurring over the Rio Grande
Valley will anchor the cold air in place and make this upcoming
event more snow than rain. The frontal boundary from the Arctic
front ahead of the aforementioned high pressure system will slow as
it pushes into the southern Great Lakes, not unexpected given the
surface low moving into James Bay/northern Quebec as well as the
developing surface low back to the southwest.

Tuesday night/Wednesday, surface low starts its track from the lower
Mississippi Valley towards the middle Ohio Valley. Frontal boundary
finally tracks into the northwestern zones, and POPs begin after 00Z
Wednesday. Starting as rain first with a warm profile with the 850mb
0C line also tracking southeastward. Will get the beginnings of the
snowfall for the is significant winter storm event in the near term
with the transition to snow first appearing around 12Z Wednesday for
Lucas County/Toledo. Could see 3-4 inches by 00Z Thursday for this
area.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
SW'erly mid- to upper-level flow persists over our CWA Wednesday
night through Thursday night as a longwave trough drifts eastward
from western/central portions of the U.S./Canada and overspreads our
region. At the surface, a cold front should bisect our CWA from NE
to SW at nightfall Wednesday evening. This front will continue
moving southeastward and should exit the rest of our CWA by daybreak
Thursday. Behind the front, an Arctic high pressure ridge builds
from the northern Great Plains through Thursday. Elsewhere, upper-
level divergence and surface pressure falls ahead of a shortwave
disturbance in the southwest U.S., rounding the base of the longwave
trough, will allow surface cyclogenesis to commence over the south-
central U.S. Wednesday night. This low should then deepen slowly as
it moves northeastward along the cold front and reaches the Mid-
Atlantic region by daybreak Friday.

Periods of steady to heavy precip will affect our CWA Wednesday
night through Thursday as the front at/near 850 mb strengthens via
frontogenetical deformation between a southerly low-level return
flow of warm and very humid air from the GoM undergoing isentropic
ascent aloft and circulating around the northern flank of the low-
level low pressure center and much colder air circulating generally
southward along the eastern flank of the low-level Arctic ridge.
Rain or a rain/snow mix will continue to change gradually to snow
from northwest to southeast as the atmospheric column cools via CAA
behind the front and the wet-bulb effect. However, a lingering warm
nose aloft may allow a freezing rain/sleet/snow mix to occur during
the transition from rain to all snow, especially in the southeastern
-third of our CWA. However, as noted in the collaboration call with
WPC early this morning, the projected track of the surface low has
shifted slightly to the southeast, which now favors a colder
forecast with greater snow/sleet potential and less freezing rain
potential in our CWA. Any ice accumulations look to be 0.10" or less
at this point. All snow is expected in our CWA by nightfall Thursday
evening. The snow will lessen in intensity and begin to taper off
from west to east overnight. By daybreak Friday morning, lingering
light snow should be confined east of roughly I-71. Moderate to
significant snow accumulations are looking more likely for our CWA,
with the greatest accumulations likely focused farther north and
west. Overnight lows should reach the 20's Wednesday night and be
followed by daytime highs in the mid 20's to lower 30's on Thursday.
Overnight lows should range from the upper single digits to teens
Thursday night.

The longwave trough will overspread our region Friday through Friday
night as a separate embedded shortwave disturbance advances from the
Upper Midwest to eastern Great Lakes. Lingering and light synoptic
snow will end by nightfall as the aforementioned surface low moves
farther northeast to near the Canadian Maritimes and the associated
warm conveyor belt/frontogenetical deformation aloft depart our
region. Additional snow accumulations should be an inch or less.
Simultaneously, the Arctic surface ridge persists over our area. A
predominantly NW'erly mean low-level flow of colder air may generate
some light lake-effect snow accumulations southeast of Lake Erie, in
and near the snowbelt. A very limited fetch across mainly ice-
covered Lake Erie should limit lake-induced CAPE and snow intensity.
Daytime highs will only reach the upper teens to lower 20's on
Friday, while overnight lows should plummet into the single digits
above or below 0F as partial clearing, light surface winds, and
fresh snowpack promote efficient radiational cooling.

&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
High pressure at the surface and aloft should crest eastward over
our CWA on Saturday through Saturday night and favor fair weather.
Net surface troughing Sunday through Monday is expected as multiple
shortwave troughs traverse our region from the north and west. In
addition, a weak cold front should sweep generally eastward Sunday
or Sunday night. There is a slight chance for isolated to scattered
snow showers. Despite a gradual moderation in temperatures, they
will likely remain below-normal.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z Tuesday THROUGH Saturday/...
Clouding up for the period, and all sites VFR except for TOL
where rain creeps into the forecast late in the TAF period.

Flow turns southerly and wind speeds increase heading into the
afternoon hours Tuesday. This will be ahead of a frontal
boundary that will slow as it enters northwestern Ohio after 00Z
Wednesday. Expect gusts to increase to 15-25kts for the western
terminals and into CLE as well, slightly less further east.

For TOL, rain moves in after 00Z Wednesday, and have ceilings to
MVFR late along with visibilities in rain coming down as well.

Outlook...Non-VFR conditions in rain and/or snow Tuesday night
through Friday morning.

&&

.MARINE...
Lake Erie is largely ice covered at this point with small areas of
ice free waters in the central and eastern basins. Winds increase
out of the south today 15-25kts, but fetch available for wave height
increases will be minimal. Major winter storm to pass through
Wednesday through early Friday with prolonged snow and winds
remaining 15-25kts.
